Trump Soho

A bucket full of wet concrete careened into scaffolding at the Trump SoHo construction site this afternoon, killing one worker, seriously injuring another and sending debris flying 40 stories to the street below the future luxury hotel-condo.

"It sounded like an explosion," said Tiffany, a 22-year-old administrative assistant, who was working in an office near the accident scene at 246 Spring Street.

"I looked out of the window and saw tons of cement falling ... It probably fell for a few minutes."

Construction workers and authorities said the bucket, which was being hoisted by a crane near the 41st floor, fell into some scaffolding supporting near the top of the building at about 1:55 p.m. The bucket and the scaffolding then fell onto one nearby worker, a married dad from the Ukraine named Yuri, who plummeted 30 feet to his death.

What's really a shame is not stopping work on an 11 violation unsafe site because Trumps money and bullying is more important than the life of this man, or the 100 of other mens lives at stake. This includes my cops & fireman who ever respond to the site. They are at an unaccetable risk due to DOB rolling over and not stopping work to keep "the developers happy."

A disgrace. And the changes impelmented this year do not address those, they just limit the responsibility to the little guy.

DOB inspectors SHOULD STOP WORK WHEN A SITE IS UNSAFE AND HAS VIOLATIONS. PERIOD. Corrupted.

It is really ashame that anyone has to die or be injured building one of Trump's monstrosities. They are to the city what his comb over is to his head.

The Donald is trying to change America. The Donald is making some progress. A poorly constructed & designed, flimsy building use to be be called jerry built; now it's called a donald built project.

The SoHo community tried and tried to get NYC to prevent this building from even going up, as it "bends" key zoning laws and now is papered with all kinds of building violations. Forget rotten design. A man died here. Another name of shame to add is BOVIS. This is the same construction company whose shoddy work practices cost the lives of FOUR firefighters at Deutsche Bank building last year. How many deaths do we have to absorb before real estate moguls are called to account? Try "never." They own this city. Like any mob, they operate by their own rules.

About Sprint: I hope the CEO was not THE IDIOT who decided way back when (when SPRINT was kicking ass and taking names, so to speak/write) to not use the international/world standard GSM technologies. Instead, Cingular did and took over the top spot and then they were bought out by ATandT who will undoubtedly really screw it up

Another mba wonder......geezuzz.....

I spend quite a bit of time on various types of construction projects and what surprises me is that more worker's aren't injured or killed. Whatever anyone may believe, construction sites are dangerous and this fact is reflected in the extraordinarily high Worker's Compensations rates paid by contractors. Obviously, any work site can be made safer and one effective means of doing this is through inspections. Inspections can't occur if the inspecting agency is under funded and understaffed. This isn't a NYC Department of Buildings responsibility: OSHA is responsible for ensuring work site safety but since 2000, the Bush administration has defunded OSHA and placed in under the control of former industry executives...another example of the line between government and industry blurring. OSHA hasn't been capable of doing it's job for some time and consequently we can expect to see worker injuries increase and not just at construction sites.

The Dept of Buildings overseeing these construction sites is under-funded and overwhelmed. They approve more construction permits than they can inspect.

Doesn't just happen to Trump. It happened on a residential construction site pretty damn close to where I stood. A worker crushed to death in an illegally built trench & another one I was nowhere near crushed by concrete.

Everyone trying to save a buck to maximize profit for the owners, hire iffy contractors, no oversight, no clear responsible entity. Dead workers and people. There are a ton of these storys in the city. Casualties of the non-stop "development boom"

Greed.

Trump's residential buildings are built out of crap materials, with totally gauche fixtures and tacky interiors. People with money, but no taste -- like wealthy ballplayers, among others -- love them, for some reason I can't figure out. They are just enamored by the Trump name. I had to oversee a re-flooring job at one of his Upper East Side condo towers last summer. Don't get me started on what a flavorless, sterile and lousy neighborhood the Upper East Side is. As far as the apartment was concerned: granted, the views from 30 floors up are nice, but this 3-bedroom apartment had a teen-tiny kitchen, no open space -- just a lot of rooms with a labyrinthine layout and no continuity -- and cheesy bathroom fixtures. Of course, it was rented out to some rich schmuck for $10,000 a month. Look at the signage outside his building on Columbus Circle: white plastic lettering on a tacky gold sign. Ugly and ostentatiously classless.
