Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs took the wraps off a super-slim new laptop Tuesday, unveiling a tiny personal computer that is less than an inch thick and turns on the moment it's opened.

At the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Jobs also confirmed the tech giant's foray into online movie rentals, revealing an alliance with all six major movie studios to offer films over high-speed Internet connections soon after they're released on DVD.

Always a showman, Jobs unwound the string on a standard-sized manila office envelope and slid out the ultra-thin MacBook Air notebook computer to coos and peals of laughter from disbelieving fans at the conference.

Is Steve Jobs a genius - or just an old head?

The talk about no optical drive sounds like the ridicule from the anti-Mac people a few years ago when Apple did away with the floppy disk drives. Yes, big mistake wasn't it?

i'm gonna get the ipod touch, the iphone with gps upgrade, apple tv, and the macbook air. i may want to watch There Might Be Blood when it comes out online
and I can transfer the movie within 24 hrs. between the devices. so i'm gonna start with my 106" montior & apple tv up until the oil rig blows, then i'm gonna go for a jog and watch it up until
the con brother arrives on my nano tv, and then i'm gonna come home and watch more on the macbook air in a starbucks up into last sequence of the movie, 1927.
then i'm gonna come home and upload the last 20 minutes on YouTube and send my friend a link so he can see it, too, and i'll of course watch it on my 106" monitor, too, cause that's the best part of the movie.
all for $4.99 in HD. I can't wait to watch it and transfer it
and upload it and then finally put it on ichat for the last 20minutes.

wait a minute, maybe i can ichat and put up the last 20 minutes of There Will Be Blood in the background of my ichat green screen.

then i can show my friends what it is like to be hit by a bowling pin by Daniel Day Lewis.

Nice and light but $1799,00. I think I'll wait a year
until they sort out the problems and the price comes
down.

It didn't allow you to print either, imposing SAMPLE across the printed page!
I sent for APPLEWORKS, previously installed on every MAC. The client paid me extra so happy withthe d=finished job.!
My daughter couldn't do a simple poster for her business on her DELL, can only have aol dial up where she is. My son-in -law tried a MAC, it wouldn't do EXCELL & his business stuff........
Bottom line SUCKERS......... America has deteriorated into a silly bunch of squabbling children, each side accusing the other of foolish things, while a fat cat few get rich!
Although I have 4 different copies of Adobe Photoshop; none of them is updated enough & I have to spend $900. to buy the latest on my SS income of $5.30 per hour!
DUMB, dumb, dumb!

Years ago on a trip to Prince Edward Island, I heard the mainland Canadians making fun of the "Newfies" Newfounlanders, because they installed rail road in a different guage than the mainland. Consequently it was not possible to roll a stock car off the boat, and transport it. It had to be unloaded & reloaded to a Newfoundland rail car.
We clever Americans now have gone them giant steps further! the left brain Republican ( controlfreaks) PC vs the right brain, Liberal, intuitive, spacially adept Mac. NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET. Both companies in it for PROFIT not functionality!
At 57, when paste up & layout old style went obsolete, I paid 13,000 to return to college and learn graphic design. The school taught the Mac OS with Adobe software. I got a used 1999 Mac that was fabulous! did everything I needed it to do. I designed and marketed several self published projects with it. While I was an AmeriCorps Vista, the cap agency where I had an office, was taken out by a virus, 35 PC's rendered usless, had to be replaced.! That entire summer I took e-mails for my supervisor on my MAC at home.!
THEN BILL GATES, decided that Internet Explorer's upgrade wouldn't be compatable with MAC's, so I could no longer access the Internet!
I now have an Intel G4 42" monitor, desk model MAC, love it EXCEPT: All the time I put into those previous projects are lost! The time I put into them has been dismissed totally by BOTH
Microsoft, & Apple in the name of THEIR profit, screw me! The standard MAC programs were gone.....the IWEB is for SoccerMoms to post pixs of their precious darlings, or the family vacation to Grand Canyon.. like the PC it now CHOOSES FOR YOU, the limited background layout function etc. FORGETABOUT IT if you are a professional artist with design capabilities!
I had an invitation card to design; using only the Microsoft Works for MAC ( free trial for 60 days, then fork over $500. to buy it.)

Futurist Robert Anson Heinlein predicted such a device a paper thin computer clip board with graphic used interface. It was in "The Door Into Summer" published in 1956. In it he also predicted electronic drafting using computer graphics.

I recently bought a new computer that had Vista installed. Its so much slower than its older OS and requires about $400 more in processing power and RAM just to run it. Even if MS matches all its promises, it will never be as fast as XP because the code is much worse than its previous OS.

On the other hand Leopard is great and Apples are well though out machines. It's too bad MS has to fight against it's customers to roll out an OS than on its scale is worse than ME.

I'm seriously considering a MAC. I also like the Matt screens that computer with Vista cannot support on their best day

A drop or two from a glass of wine ended up on my MacBook and now the screen has been slightly ruined. I wish they'd make a slick but durable laptop that could withstand a trip in the dishwasher.

bravo ... one step closer to a digital page.

my main complaint abou reading a computer screen is the distance placed between you and IT.

a book, you fee it, you turn the pages, you release your emtions by twisting and turning it ... yes, i've been dreaming of a flexible -polymer, ultra-thin computer that I can hold like an actual page ... this is one step closer.

and to that i say GODSPEED!!!!

Wake me up when they announce a touch screen tablet and an iPhone with true internet capabilities.

Otherwise, who cares?

A lifetime PC user I was in the market a second system. Rather than going Vista (ie warmed over XP with performance choking security features) I opted for the iMac. Dollar per dollar it'll match HD capacity, CPU, bus speed, graphics, camera etc of any PC AND YOU DON'T NEED AV SOFTWARE.

I'd recommend you get Applecare. My daughter's Macbook harddrive died after only 14 months of use - replaced free of charge.

Of course there's also the lack of a user replaceable battery becuase they ruin Stevie's artistic vibe

And so they can charge you $50-60 on top of whatever ungodly price they want for a battery normally to have a tech open it up and replace it.

This will definitely sell among the Apple cultists. They'd buy anything extremely pricey that can make them feel superior to the rest of humanity.

Neocons love macs.
