Obama: I'd Be A Bad "Chief Operating Officer" As President

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama freely admits he doesn't have the experience to run a bureaucracy.

But he's banking on the fact voters aren't looking for a "chief operating officer" in this election.
"I have a pretty good sense of my strengths and my weaknesses," he said today during a meeting with the Reno Gazette-Journal editorial board."I am very good at teasing out from people who are smarter than me what the issues are and how we resolve them," he said. "I don't think there is anybody in this race who can inspire the American people better than I can. And I don't think there is anybody in this race who can bridge differences ... better than I can.

"But I'm not an operating officer. Some in this debate around experience seem to think the job of the president is to go in and run some bureaucracy. Well, that's not my job. My job is to set a vision of 'here's where the bureaucracy needs to go.'"

This reminds me of something I once heard, I don't know who said it:

"We are on the precipice of disaster - let us all take a giant leap forward."

isn't our current administration self-described as "The CEO Administration"? why would we want more of this?

and Obama correctly described what absolutely must be the job of the next President.

Sounds to me like Obama wants the Bush style of presidency.

Bush delegated "Brownie" but since Bush didn't know what the job was he got confused and put a "horse" guy in a "human" job to deal with major disasters. This should have made us all aware of how important it was to actually f**king know something about a job before you take it!

Huh, I wonder why businesses haven't thought of this...oh yeah they want to remain in business so they like having someone that knows something about the job. Visions aren't going to save the world.

A good manager delegates tasks and gathers information from experts, but when push comes to shove they had better know the material and have a sense of direction. As with AnninCA I've seen a lot of Junior Executives crash and burn.

That is what Obama is: A Junior Executive who needs a great deal more time and seasoning before he's ready for the top job.

It's so true...knowing how things work is a complete disadvantage to visionaries. He should avoid any kind of experience at all costs. Maybe that's why he's avoided any real work on the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee he chairs. Brilliant!

I don't want another president like Jimmy Carter who had to count the number of notepads in the WH and make the schedule for the softball team! I love Carter but he was a disaster as president, in large measure because he had to do everything himself. He was a manager, not a leader.

I want a leader who can put the vision out there, and put the people in place to help him steer the course to reach it. That's Obama!

good for him. we're looking for someone with a vision, not a bureaucrat or a bus driver.

I absolutely don't want another COO as President ~ all it brings to mind is President Carter.

Carter's COO approach ~ his fixation on details kept him from working towards his vision for the country and gathering the people together who could help him understand the nature of the problems in depth and chart a course to resolution. President Carter was a fine man, and since he left office he found his calling and has done marvelous things for all sorts of people and countries.

Obama, by his history, by his ability to energize people with his vision and rhetoric and by his comments in this article, IS the man!

Best of all, I think his definition of the role of the Presidency is right on!

I think this is the ONLY response he can truly offer as to why his own personal record is so lackluster.

He's the guy I dated who had potential but never delivered.

I was wondering when someone in his campaign was going to spot the real weakness in Hillary's campaign.

And the real distinction.

She's vulnerable on this point.

I don't think the headline reflects the content and the spirit of the article by a long shot.

He just admitted it. That should be the end of his candidacy. He is not Presidential material.
