Of COURSE Oprah's Network Is Called OWN

Are there no media mountains this woman can't climb? Today Oprah Winfrey has announced that she is will be joining with Discovery Communications to launch a television network in 2009. Its name? "OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network."

You can't make this stuff up.

OWN will replace the current Discovery Health Channel, currently in over 70 million homes. Which means that soon, over 70 million homes will own OWN! Just kidding, they only rent it every month. No one owns Oprah but Oprah — who will now OWN Oprah.

Per TV Decoder:

"In addition to providing her talent, and personal commitment, Winfrey will have full editorial control over the joint venture and will be responsible for OWN's programming, branding and creative vision," a press release stated.

See? Oprah OWNs you, people. Get used to it, if you weren't already. Bonus alternate slogan for extra branding: "Obama Wins Nation!" Ownership has its privileges.

All cable companies will carry it and charge you more for the privilege to have it - even if you're NOT a FUBL (Fat, Ugly, Black Les'bian).

If you look at the shows she has lined up - topics that have been done over and over and over again for years.

Right on, Oprah. It's great to hear one of the good guys (forgive me, GIRLS) gets to own some of the airwaves. With all the useless programming on the MSM, it's great to hear that someone intelligent and committed to quality content is on top. I'm hoping there might be programs coming that would include some of the lesser known voices like, Michael Dyson, Cornell West, and especially Melissa Harris-Lacewell to add depth to the discussion, but, I'm sure you have something great already planned for us all.
