Obama In Vegas

Henderson, NV -- Just three days before the "tie-breaker" Nevada caucuses this coming Saturday, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama stormed through the Silver State today and chided rival Hillary Clinton's campaign, accusing her of distorting his position on social security and health care.

"You may be getting some fliers, you may be getting some phone calls from the Hillary Clinton camp saying she will solve the social security crisis through fiscal responsibility while Barack Obama wants a trillion dollar tax hike," the Illinois senator told a jammed crowd Wednesday morning at the convention center in this booming Las Vegas suburb. Obama then explained he would bolster social security by removing the current cap on the very highest of earners and not be a general tax raise as implied by Clinton. "Maybe she thinks the top 3% of earners are average American taxpayers, but I don't."

Obama also complained that his supporters were getting calls and fliers from Clinton supporters accusing his health care plan of leaving 15 million Americans uninsured. Obama brushed aside the charge and then proceeded to criticize President Clinton and Hillary Clinton for attempting health care reform "the wrong way" last decade. "They went behind closed doors to do it and allowed lobbyists the and health care industry to shape the plan and eventually kill it."

Obama went out of his way to take his jabs at Clinton today, delivering them after he finished a standard stump speech and after answering a handful of questions from the audience of a thousand or so that began to gather in front of the convention center doors at 7 am -- two hours before the town hall began. "I want to just say a few more things before I go," Obama said as he launched into his swipes at Clinton.

While Obama was speaking, Clinton was scheduled to hold a dueling event at the nearby University of Nevada Las Vegas focused on opposition to the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear dump site, a hot button issue for Silver State politics.

After Obama's win in the Iowa caucus and Clinton's dramatic win in the New Hampshire primary, both campaigns have poured enormous staff and financial resources into what now becomes the Democratic rubber match in Nevada. Third-running John Edwards has also set out on an aggressive campaign schedule, continuing to play a wild card role in the tight early voting primaries and caucuses. Most opinion surveys show all three candidates in a very close race to win Saturday's Nevada caucuses.

"This is a dream come true for us," said an impartial Democratic Party official observing the Obama rally. "We had hoped that moving up Nevada's caucus calendar would give us a voice in the election and now we have it."

After a weekend barrage of explosive charges and counter-charges between the Obama and Clinton campaigns over issues of race and both candidates' positions on the war in Iraq, the tone markedly softened during last night's televised Democratic debate in Las Vegas, termed little more than a "love-in" by many observers.

But a fierce and divisive ground war among the campaigns is being fought around the clock as the campaigns hustle to get their supporters to show up and stand for their respective campaigns this coming Saturday caucuses scheduled for 11:30 am. "We've got a couple of hundred people fanning out every morning and going work site to work site," says Pilar Weiss, political director of the 60,000 strong Culinary Workers Union Local 226 which recently endorsed Obama. Representing mostly hotel and casino service employees, the Culinary is considered to be a political powerhouse.

But the Clinton campaign has mobilized the bulk of Nevada's Democratic establishment in its corner. While Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has declared himself formally neutral, his son Rory Reid, a powerful Clark County Commissioner, has been marshaling the party machine to support Clinton. "We've never seen the political temperature so high here," says a prominent Las Vegas liberal activist, "And we've never been so divided. We're really getting torn between the competing campaigns."

Part of that division has spilled over into the courts. A teachers union supporting Hillary Clinton has sued to close down nine caucus sites housed inside Vegas Strip casinos, arguing the sites favor Culinary workers employed there. Obama supporters have responded by saying the pro-Clinton lawsuit is nothing but a bald-faced attempt at voter suppression.

Obama directly took on the issue this weekend when he told a rally of Culinary workers that the "insiders" who oppose him are maneuvering to "change the rules" to keep them from voting.
"Ever since I got the support of Local 226, the lawyers started to get involved. The rules were OK as long as you did what they wanted you to do. But as soon as you said, 'I'm going to support the outsider, I'm going to support the new guy,' all of a sudden they decided they want to change the rules," he told the meeting of Culinary Workers on Sunday.

A local judge will issue a ruling on Thursday as to whether or not the caucusing inside Strip hotels can go ahead.

Meanwhile, Senator Clinton was almost two hours late for her appearance at UNLV .She did not apologize for being late, leaving much of the audience startled.

Appearing in a large circular ballroom at the Tam Alumni Center Clinton addressed a group of mostly elderly l50 locals. Clinton sat with her back to the audience and faced the press, while she engaged in an academic discussion on Yucca Mountain with eight academics and community activists.

A weary-looking Clinton introduced each of the 8 presenters who were seated in a rectangle around her. They each made a short presentation and she commented on their presentations. She said she shared their distrust of big government, specifically the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. And the New York Senator said the next president needs to reestablish scientific research and not wage a general war on science as the Bush administration has done. The 60 minute session was less a campaign rally and more of an academic seminar. Many of the seniors in the audience nodded off during the presentation.

But Clinton was on top of her game and stayed alert and deeply engaged. After the session ended, Clinton sat down with NBC Nightly news anchor, Brian Williams, for an interview to be broadcast on tonight's evening news.

Both Obama and Clinton have large closing rallies scheduled for Friday here in the Las Vegas area. John Edwards will also be rallying his ground troops here tomorrow morning.

Nobody’s second place finish in Michigan

On Tuesday, With no other major candidates names on the ballot, Hillary Clinton was able to get 55% of the vote in the Michigan Democratic primary, but the real story should be the 225,506 + who left their house and went down to their precinct, knowing their state had been striped of its delegates, and voted uncommitted.
When “nobody” runs against her, “nobody” starts with 40%. And “nobody” didn’t even have to campaign. “Nobody” spent no money in this race. “Nobody” didn’t even run one ad. What happens when you add John McCain or Rudy Giuliani in place of “nobody”?
As democrats we have to think long and hard about nominating a candidate who is so divisive. We shouldn’t spend these preciously important years ahead re-fighting old fights or addressing political grudges. If we are what we say we are than we must love our country more than this, and choose a leader who can bring Americans together. Our society’s needs are too great, the time to pivotal, for anything but fundamental change backed by broad-based support from the American people. Senator Obama proved in Iowa that he can get this type of support from Democrats Republicans and Independents, and nobody proved it on Tuesday.

Obama's criticism of health care plan fiasco as they tried to bring about drastic changes as early as 1992 is not fair. What needs to be criticized is the dogged negligence of the issue , and not being able to present a coherent and cohesive alternative till so far escalating the problem to the level it is now making it more and more difficult even attempting to solve it.

This is not what America needs. America needs a president who cares about the country. The country has been plunged into a huge debt situation. The Taxes were cut for the rich as the President took the country into an illegal war.Where is the sense?

I cannot believe that I not only voted for Bill twice, but also stuck up for him when my friends would say how sleezy he was.
When the Queen ran for office against Rick Lazio I had intentions of voting for him until I got a push poll call from the Lazio campaign. I was so angry at the vitriol and meaness leveled at HRC that I told Lazio's supporter that I would be voting for HRC instead because I didn't approve of deceitful push polls tactics.
How ironic that today she is employing the same mean-spirited republican tactics that made me vote for her instead of her opponent. Never again will I vote for this witch.

Politics is the gentle art of getting voted from the poor and campaign funds from the rich by promising to protect each from the other.

Hillary: Richard Nixon in pumps ...

by Martin Edwin Andersen

I couldn't agree more with Christopher's take on the Hillary Clinton candidacy.

I remember interviewing the former FBI chief in Little Rock, someone who initially liked Bill Clinton and was eloquent in his concern about post-9/11 civil rights.

He did, however, change his view on Bill Clinton once he looked into the case of Juanita Broaddrick, the woman who accused the former Arkansas governor of rape. (See Washingtonpost.com Special Report: Clinton Accused; http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/stories/broaddrick022599.htm)

The FBI Special Agent in Charge told me he was "shaken" by his personal conclusion that Ms. Broaddrick had in fact been sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton.

I might add one other particular to Christopher's spot-on charge that: "Indifferent to truth, willing to use police-state tactics and vulgar libels against inconvenient witnesses, hopeless on health care, and flippant and fast and loose with national security: The case against Hillary Clinton for president is open-and-shut."

Hillary Clinton, under fire about her commitment to civil rights, has lately been loudly proclaiming her fealty to the Democratic Party's best traditions on human rights.
However, just two years ago, Hillary--the purported "expert" on international relations--said there should be "lawful authority" for torture in some cases. (See, for example, http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0907/6050.html.)

Her stand was opposite to that of every other major Democratic presidential candidate in 2007-2008, and the heat she took for it caused her to make one of her famous "flip flops."

Democrats hungry to regain the White House need to ask themselves, as is asked in Mark 8:36, "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul."

Want to know how HRC and the Clinton Cabal will govern? Look at their Swift Boat tactics applied to Obama on race and voter participation.

HRC will do all to crush the opposition in a grab for power. We're witnessing the Democratic Party version of Bush's White House with Karl Rove in the background. The MO hasn't changed just the cast of characters.

I'm struck by defenders of HRC who callously look past their efforts to deny voting rights to Culinary Workers on the Vegas Strip and then in the same breath tell everyone how much they have supported voters rights and organizing for the Hispanic community.

Let's also talk about race since it was the Clinton's invitation to insert this. Swift Boating at its finest. The race card is the weirdest I've seen, and it comes down to an earlier nuanced discussion circulated by the Clinton camp about whether Barack Obamna was "black enough". Give me a break! The Clinton's surround themselves with African American politicians who stand there trashing Obama's campaign and invoking the same position, but what all fail to grasp is the need to UNITE ALL AMERICANS as opposed to defining how we differ from each other.

As Democratic voters ponder their candidate, managerial style is especially important because it gives a glimpse how the Clinton's would govern. "Experience" is balderdash should "experience" be used to promulgate benefits of large corporate interests and Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex. I've seen enough of the style of HRC and within her lies a vindictive streak to "get even" versus get "past it".

We need to unite Republicans, Dems, and Independents as Americans first. HRC is red meat ("How can we defeat the Bitch?" was the questioned posed to McCain.) If that is the starting point, then compromise is doomed from the get go.

The United States needs a UNITER. We have been governed by politics of division and isolation for the past seven years. No More!

Hmmm. Barack seems to like playing the victim a little too often, when complaining of the tactics of the Clinton camp on taxes, health care and other matters. That's not very attractive is it? Both sides have landed some pretty low blows about the other. Stop moaning Barack, and put out your own forceful vision for the future.

On the other hand, Hillary does reinforce the image of arrogance when she fails to apologize for being 2 hours late. Her husband was often very late for his events too.

Is he "chiding" her for not emulating Richard Nixon? He's announced he's going to model his presidency on RONALD REAGAN! Good ole "trickle down, reward for millionaires, Iran-Contra" Reagan. Says Reagan was a better president than Bill Clinton.

So, all you people who still support Obama better change to the GOP. This guy is not Democrat.

I watched the entire debate. Barack Obama blew away the competition. He is the obvious choice for well informed Democrats.

He is the strongest on the issues, having been right by opposing the Iraq War before it started.

He is the most honest of the candidates by far, and the American public has picked up on this fact.

He is the only one who can bring the nation together.

He's picking up momemtum and has overcome Hillary's gigantic lead and tied her in the national polls.

It's good to be an Obama supporter!

Obama 2008!

America is hooked on hype and too much romantic escapism.
Senator Barack Obama does not have what it takes to lead America in the climate of fear in the 21st century.
He is very naive and unrealistic.

The best presidential candidates are Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

Joe Biden would have been the best if he never gave up.

The American press should be held responsible for misleading Americans to accept incompetent presidential candidates.
Senator Barack Obama is a media contraption.
He has a romantic idea of presidential leadership.
He forgot that JFK was a war hero and tested legislator before he contested for the presidency of the United States of America.

REALITIES:
The first enemy of all fundamental Muslims is America.
One of them just slaughtered his two teenage daughters in Texas on New Year's Eve, because they were dating non-Muslims.
There are too many lunatic fringe elements among Muslims everywhere.

There will be bloody conflicts in Lebanon as Hezbollah with military support from Iran will want to take over the government as Hamas has done in Palestine.

The American foreign policy will be unpredictable due to unforseen circumstances and the energy crisis will force America to secure her strategic interests in the Middle East.
Algeria and Indonesia are hotbeds of terrorism.

What plans do the presidential candidates have for home security, the dangers of illegal immigrants and terrorism?

The best method for the monitoring and evaluation of the state of terrorist cells in America is to watch all locations of immigrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, because they knew she would make Pakistan an ally of America and permit more American incursions in Islamic states.

America should withdraw from Iraq before next summer and let the Iraqis make or break their country.
Iraqis have their lives to live.
They do not need America to continue their Islamic government.
Islamic Democracy is different from Western Democracy.
America should leave these people alone.
Bring the troops back home and watch your borders and public buildings 24/7.

If the issue of where to hold caucuses that are fair and equal to all comes to the forefront, and employers are threatening to fire workers who take time off to caucus, the union should threaten to strike against the casinos.
That should get their attention.
Then they can thank the Clinton machine.

More and more I realize that Hilary doesn't know very much about the economic crisis facing us.

Today she was on CNBC and said she would institute a 90 day moratorium on foreclosures on house mortgages so she could sort out which are capable of being paid back and should not be foreclosed.

How in the world would you do that? How do you go through each individual mortgage - there are millions - evaluating each one for credit risk? Who would do that in 90 days? What criterion would you use for foreclosing or not? What kind of payment schedule would you use? To make things even more complicated she said she favors an interest rate freeze. This means that if you are owed money by somebody, the government says not so fast, you can't have your money, I, Queen Hilary am overruling the courts, congress and everybody because I feel like freezing interest rates and taking money from peter to pay paul because paul is going to vote for me.

Looks like we have another "decider" on our hands. Look out.

It is all insane, folks. Hilary sounds great but it is meaningless drivel meant to go in one ear and out the other and Hilary just hopes nobody questions here too specifically on all these plans before Feb 5, Super Tuesday, after which it will be too late for America. We will be stuck with her.
