CAIRO, Egypt — Omar Osama bin Laden bears a striking resemblance to his notorious father _ except for the dreadlocks that dangle halfway down his back. Then there's the black leather biker jacket. The 26-year-old does not renounce his father, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, but in an interview with The Associated Press, he said there is better way to defend Islam than militancy: Omar wants to be an "ambassador for peace" between Muslims and the West.

Omar _ one of bin Laden's 19 children _ raised a tabloid storm last year when he married a 52-year-old British woman, Jane Felix-Browne, who took the name Zaina Alsabah. Now the couple say they want to be advocates, planning a 3,000-mile horse race across North Africa to draw attention to the cause of peace.

"It's about changing the ideas of the Western mind. A lot of people think Arabs _ especially the bin Ladens, especially the sons of Osama _ are all terrorists. This is not the truth," Omar told the AP last week at a cafe in a Cairo shopping mall.

Of course, many may have a hard time getting their mind around the idea of "bin Laden: peacenik."

"Omar thinks he can be a negotiator," said Alsabah, who is trying to bring her husband to Britain. "He's one of the only people who can do this in the world."

Omar lived with the al-Qaida leader in Sudan, then moved with him to Afghanistan in 1996.

There, Omar says he trained at an al-Qaida camp but in 2000 he decided there must be another way and he left his father, returning to his homeland of Saudi Arabia.

"I don't want to be in that situation to just fight. I like to find another way and this other way may be like we do now, talking," he said in English.

He suggested his father did not oppose his leaving _ and Alsabah interjected that Omar was courageous in breaking away, but neither elaborated.

Although there is no way to confirm the details he describes of his childhood and upbringing, the strong family resemblance and Omar's knowledge of Osama's family life have convinced many of his lineage.

"Omar Bin Laden is the son of Osama bin Laden and his first wife, Najwa," a U.S. intelligence official said Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The official confirmed Omar was raised in Sudan and Afghanistan after his father was forced out of Saudi Arabia.

Omar and his wife insist they have not been bothered by Egyptian officials, who said Thursday that the terror leader's son did not pose a threat.

"He comes and goes just like any other tourist," said a security official, also speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. "He is taking a line that is totally different from him father."

Omar said he hasn't seen or been in contact with his father since leaving Afghanistan. "He doesn't have e-mail," Omar said. "He doesn't take a telephone ... if he had something like this, they will find him through satellites."

Omar doesn't criticize his father and says Osama bin Laden is just trying to defend the Islamic world.

"My father thinks he will be good for defending the Arab people and stop anyone from hurting the Arab or Muslim people any place in the world," he said, noting that the West didn't have a problem with his father when he was fighting the Russians in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Omar is convinced a truce between the West and al-Qaida is possible.

"My father is asking for a truce but I don't think there is any government (that) respects him. At the same time they do not respect him, why everywhere in the world, they want to fight him? There is a contradiction," he said.

Osama bin Laden, believed to be in hiding in the Pakistan-Afghan border region, offered a truce to Europe in a 2004 audiotape and a conditional truce to the United States in a 2006 message. In November, he called on European nations to pull out of Afghanistan in a message seen by some experts as an effort to reach out to Europe.

But in a series of messages since last fall, he also has been calling for Muslims to rally around jihad, or "holy war," encouraging fighters in Iraq in particular to continue their battles with U.S. and Iraqi forces.

At least two of Osama bin Laden's sons, Hamza and Saad, are believed to have an active role in al-Qaida _ with Hamza believed to be in the Pakistan-Afghan border zone and Saad thought to be in Iran, perhaps in Iranian custody.

But most of the al-Qaida leader's children, like Omar, live as legitimate businessmen. The family as a whole disowned Osama in 1994 when Saudi Arabia stripped him of his citizenship because of his militant activities.

The family is wealthy: Osama bin Laden's billionaire father Mohammed, who died in 1967, had more than 50 children and founded the Binladen Group, a construction conglomerate that gets many major building contracts in the kingdom.

Since leaving his father's side, Omar has lived in Saudi Arabia, where he runs a contracting company connected with the Binladen Group, but he spends much of his time in Egypt. It was during a desert horseback ride at the Pyramids of Giza that he met his wife.

Their marriage in April made them tabloid fodder, particularly in Britain, where headlines touted the "granny who married Osama bin Laden's son." Alsabah, who has married five times, has five grandchildren.

The couple has applied for a visa to Britain. And they are planning their endurance horse race across North Africa, which they hope to start in March. It is in the planning stages _ they are seeking approval of governments along the route and need sponsors to help pay for the event and raise money for child victims of war.

Omar said they plan to ride 30 miles a day, with periodic weeklong rests in each country.

Teams from around the world will be encouraged to join in what the couple envisions as an equine version of the Paris-Dakar car rally. That rally was canceled this year due to fears over terrorist threats made by al-Qaida-affiliated groups in North Africa.

Omar, however, said he isn't worried.

"I heard the rally was stopped because of al-Qaida," he said. "I don't think they are going to stop me."

Now, regarding " Christianity has inspired much greatness and nobility in the human spirit", a stronger argument can be made that the names you cite, and the associate greatness, occurred despite Christianity, not because of it. And taking credit for Gandhi is kind of dishonest, isn't it? Actually it is hilarious.

Now, Hitler comes to mind quite readily as a violent Christian. Mussolini is another one. Pinochet? Yeah, he was pretty violent as well. If you want more names, I'm sure you can Google.

A more recent name: George W Bush.

Actually what is at issue on 'both' sides (believers and non-beleivers) is a lack of scholarship.

Regarding Ghandi :
Intellectuals are not created in a vaccum, they absorb from various influences and Ghandi was no different.Prior to becoming a mystic and peace activist he was an intellectual and moralist. It is well documented that Ghandi was influenced by Tolstoy's "The Kingdom of God is within You". Ghandi went on to found Tolstoy farm in South Africa a place that gave him "spiritual purification and penance" in the winning phase of the satyagraha campaign in South Africa (1908-1914).

Other notable Western influences were Thoreau and Ruskin. Ghandi integrated his Indian traditons with a profound search for the truth which very much included Christianity; The Sermon on the Mount had a profound impact.

Belief is personal and I don't support propagation of any faith; but it is one thing to take a position after sound scholarship and research and another to dismiss religions out of ignorance and expediency.

Hitler and Bush are not Christians;to lay claim to this indicates your ignorance as well as theirs.

The test is simple:
"By their fruit ye shall know them" The previous examples were listed because only people that improve the lot of humanity through their giving and peacemaking can be called Christian....Christ's ultimate commandment is that we love our neighbor as our selves and that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your brother (blood relations don't count).

um....he's a multi-millioniare businessman who can't get a visa to any Western country even after marrying a British citizen more than a year ago...? Looks like the folks in security know more than the posters on this thread do...

Also, he shares his daddy's love of horse flesh and horse racing; breeding race horses was a favorite activity of Papa Bin Laden before he took up the jihad...

I wouldn't get near this "horse race for peace" with a ten foot pole. If nothing else, it just shows the limitations of the rich kid mentality. One decent race horse can cost millions of dollars and many are owned by Arab conglomerates, even the ones that race in the States (including a recent Kentucky Derby winner). So what will this great peace project be? Just the rich giving each other a good time, once again....it might as well be a yacht race, why not? It will mean just that much to the rest of us folk.

Stupid. If he were serious about peace/good works and a bit more intelligent, he could come up with something meaningful to do with his vast fortune. Instead he's just getting good publicity for his rather exclusive hobby. Better than becoming a terrorist, but not very good. Omar sounds like the average run of overpriveleged Saudi jerk to me.

THAT IS NOT WHAT I SAID.

HumeSkeptic posted: "why should offspring apologize for the "sins" of their parents?"

Like I said, reading comprehension was poor this night. (Thirsty Thursday) I responded to, I believe three people who posted the argument that the bible does not support the idea that the sins of the father fall on the son, or that it says the opposite.

I responded in declarative statements that the Bible INDEED DOES MAKE SUCH A CURSE, and was mistakenly accused of supporting that position. I in no way expressed support for that curse; I only attempted to correct those who erroneously argued that the Bible supported their positions.

But I was attacked all night by all sorts of folks whose comprehension and critical thinking skills must have been impaired with alcohol, including one claiming to be a devote Muslim, in the heat of their desire to accept this bin Laden son into their arms and hearts. Why? Because I posted that his criticisms of the West should be taken with some salt; that the value of his criticism should be tempered with his failure to criticize his father or of radical Islam.

Oh Crap! There I go again, arguing that the sins of the father fall on the son (irony off). NO! I repeat this most emphatically: NO! THAT IS NOT WHAT I SAID.

I said that as a peacemaker, he needs to take a balanced position; I DID NOT say that he should not be accepted into our hearts because of his paternity. And even for this mild argument for balance in peacemaking I was attacked by the Huffy's Leftists as a Muslim-hater. And this is the final measure of peace among the far-left: is that Islam must be embraced without question if peace is to be allowed. Uhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........dum dum dum

Hey Coyote,

This will be very apt for you.

Pride Caused Us to Attack Iraq
by Rev. Susan Thistlethwaite
http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/susan_brooks_thistlethwaite/2008/01/pride_caused_us_to_attack_iraq.html

Since "stupid" is not one of the "Seven Deadly Sins" (though I think it should make the list), I"m going with pride as the deadliest sin for the United States of America in recent years. Deaths of U.S. troops, deaths of Iraqi civilians and military, death upon death has been the result of overreaching pride on the part of the United States in attacking a country that had not attacked us first. In theological terms, this is hubris, hubris or hybris from the Greek. According to its modern usage, hubris is exaggerated self-pride or self-confidence (overbearing pride), often resulting in fatal retribution. I"d say that fits.

Arrogance, conceit, self-importance and smugness"prideful behavior on every level is what caused this administration to violate 1,600 years of Christian moral reasoning, the Just War theory, and attack Iraq. "Rogue state" is the term usually applied to countries that engage in pre-emptive war; blind pride is usually the cause.

This kind of prideful behavior is not only a political and strategic error, it is a fundamental faith error. The Christian theologian who best grasped the magnitude and meaning of the sin of pride is Reinhold Niebuhr. He wrote, regarding the sin of pride, "But the self lacks the faith and trust to subject itself to God. By giving life a false center, the self then destroys the real possibility for itself and others. The sin of inordinate self-love thus points to the prior sin of lack of trust in God."

The irony of the religious blather that has accompanied the various justifications for our attack on Iraq is made evident as we consider Niebuhr's articulation of the theological basis of the sin of pride. It is unbelief, not faith, that led us to the blind arrogance that has mired this country in an unwinnable war now longer than WWII.

Compare and contrast:

Vengeance is considered a right and proper expression of semitic and Arabic cultures; does this boy apologize for, criticize or reject his culture? No he criticizes OURS, as lacking in understanding of HIS.

Christian based cultures, in contrast, have a Biblical admonishment against revenge that allows us to transcend our hatred for our enemies, even as has occurred with those we destroyed in WW-2, the Germans and the Japanese.

Omar wants to be an "ambassador for peace" between Muslims and the West ...

Huh. OK. ....

Well someone should check in with Bushco for this eager young man to see if they're looking to fill for that role. Since his father has performed so well in his position as 'ambassador of terror', and Bushco clearly has no problem with nepotism, then it would seem he could shoe-in for the job.

And judge soul each by their own.

Besides just who created bin Laden monster that the neocons fear, but never mention especially during the campaign season?

Good for Omar. Lets see neoconned and pro-Bush Americans renounce their love for more wars against innocent Muslims under the false pretenses of WMDs, democracy, and threats of mushroom cloud by 3rd world nations.

You're one step ahead of them.
