MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Republican Mike Huckabee said the government should stay out of disputes over the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

"You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag," Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, told supporters Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

"In fact, if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell 'em what to do with the pole, that's what we'd do," Huckabee said.

Arkansas' flag includes four stars surrounding the word "Arkansas" _ one above it and three below it. The one above stands for the Confederacy, according to the state code.

He would not say whether he considers it offensive to fly the flag, a symbol of racism to some and Southern pride to others, saying only that the matter should be up to the states. That was the position of his rival John McCain when he ran for president in 2000; after losing, McCain said he had not been honest about his feelings and that the flag should go.

Pressed later on whether he finds the flag offensive, Huckabee refused to give an opinion.

"It's really not something that is an issue for the president of the United States; that's an issue South Carolina would deal with," Huckabee said at a news conference in Columbia, S.C.

Ironically, Huckabee is barnstorming South Carolina with former Gov. David Beasley, who angered conservative Republicans by calling for the flag's removal from the Statehouse dome. Today, the flag is displayed elsewhere on the state Capitol grounds.

Earlier Thursday, Huckabee assailed political insiders who blew opportunities to fix Washington, a subtle dig at rivals McCain and Fred Thompson.

Huckabee did not name names as he campaigned at a steel plant in Huger, S.C., but it was clear he meant McCain and Thompson, a current and former senator, respectively, who are competing against him in South Carolina's primary Saturday.

"Everyday, some Washington insider is coming down to South Carolina telling you not to vote for me," Huckabee told about 125 people at the Nucor Steel Berkeley plant. "My attitude is, if they were going to fix it, they should have already done it. Since they haven't, the last thing we need is them going to the White House."

For many years now the right has managed to divide their party into neatly organized little piles. Gaybashers, pro-lifers, gun enthusiests, and so on. But now it appears that they have been able to capture your attention as well. Look, its just a flag. Who cares? But how much time have you spent grappling with this idea. Yes, the religious right scares the hell out of me, and I hope and pray every night for a changing of the guard as well. But you people are just as scary. Pangardenguru admits to wishing a man he probably knows little about would die. Thats no better than them. I am supremely disappointed in my leftist leaning friends. For Christ's sake its just a flag.

I'm not sure all people with an attachment to the Confederate flag do so for racist reasons. There are plenty of them around here, on people's trucks and what all ever. We weren't even a state during the Civil War, but the Indian tribes, and those few whites, like my father's family, who lived in Indian Territory at the time, fought for the Confederacy. The last Confederate general to surrender was Stand Watie, a Cherokee. My father was VERY Southern idealogically, but it had a lot more to do with not wanting Yankees telling us what to do than it did with blacks. The poor dirt farmers, like Daddy's family, didn't give a rat's ass about preserving slavery for the rich. They just didn't want someone else telling them what to do. And I think that's what the flag represents to a lot of people. Of course, it's good that the South lost and the Union was preserved, and I don't think anyone would dispute that. The flag is just a silly piece of nostalgia that only threatens those who perceive threats everywhere they turn.

I'm torn (no pun intended) about the flag issue! Should we arrest anyone who raises one as a traitor (off to Gitmo!) or just allow the police to take them down and burn them! It's not History (History is for museums!) It's Treason!

You know, the Huckster is right. The People of South Carolina SHOULD have the opportunity to decide what flag flies over their State House ... it's only right. But, let's give the people of South Carolina more options, shall we?

I mean, we are a Nation of tremendous abundance, why not be magnanimous and in addition to the Confederate Flag, offer as choices ... The Rising Sun of Imperial Japan ... The Swastika of Nazi Germany ... The Hammer and Sickle of the Soviet Union ...

For all of these additional choices would be just as appropriate atop the State House in Columbia as the Confederate Flag, for all of these flags represent exactly the same thing ...

The flag in itself is not offensive. It's how people who misuse it that's offensive. White folks should have stood up years ago when it was a symbol used by the KKK against blacks, but they didn't. Shame on them.

That being said, the fear many southern whites have about this issue stems from the fact that there are radicals who want to stamp any and all symbols of the history of the Confederacy, based upon the political correctness of the times.

Let the people of South Carolina decide.

BTW - It was Democrat Governor Hollingsworth who put that flag up in 1961, with the agreement to take it down in 1965, commemrorating the beginning and the end of the War of Northern Aggression.

Huckabee would have to feel the same way about wearing the Nazi "Swastika"! Both symbols represent bigotry, intollerance and legitimizing the abuse, exploitation and murder of any people who you personally choose to classify as "inferior"!

Being for free speech and states rights is racist when it is Huck and noble when it is Obama.
When Obama is against gay marriage he is pro gay.
When Huck says the same thing it is homophobic...
I think you should be free to fly or burn the flag. I am tired of the MSM blind support for Obama and attakcs on Huck for identical positions.

Its just like trent lott said,
"if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

Speaking of the great South Carolian Strom Thurmon who also said

"I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the n----- race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches."

There are actually two issues here which have been conflated.

Should the Confederate fly OVER the dome of a state capitol?
Correct answer: No. A flag flying over a state's executive, legislative or judicial buildings implies the government symbolized by that flag is in charge. Therefore, that IS a federal issue to a certain extent. The U.S. and (current) state flags are the only appropriate flags to fly in this position and manner.

Should the Confederate flag fly elsewhere?
Correct answer: That's up to each state. If the citizens of that state want a Confederate flag elsewhere on state government grounds, or in history museums, that should be of no overriding interest to the federal government.

Do you see the difference? I have my own (personal) opinion on the issue, but I don't live in South Carolina. Therefore, I shouldn't (nor do I want to) have any right to control what South Carolinians do UNLESS it's a U.S. (federal) issue. As soon as they removed the Confederate flag from flying over the dome, it ceased to be a federal issue, imo. Up until that point, it was.

For once, Huckabee made a good point. The Federal government should not get involved in the decision to fly the Confederate flag in South Carolina. That is a local matter.
