Anna Wintour Hillary Clinton

WWD:

Don't mess with Anna Wintour. A lesson learned by many in fashion, but obviously not by Sen. Hillary Clinton or her advisers. Clinton was to appear in Vogue as the presidential race reached high gear, but backed out late last fall before a photo shoot was scheduled for fear of appearing too alluring. New York Post columnist Liz Smith reported Nov. 1 that "the astute [Vogue contributing editor] Julia Reed hung ten waiting to write about her and the giant fotog Annie Leibovitz had her cameras at the ready for nothing." A Vogue spokesman confirmed: "We were told by Ms. Clinton's camp that they were concerned if Clinton appeared in Vogue that she would appear too feminine." (Clearly, though, the presidential candidate didn't worry about that when she cried in New Hampshire.)

But Wintour didn't take Clinton's dis lightly. In her February editor's letter, Wintour takes Clinton to task for being behind the times. "Imagine my amazement, then, when I learned that Hillary Clinton, our only female president hopeful, had decided to steer clear of our pages at this point in her campaign for fear of looking too feminine. The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying." Wintour continues: "This is America, not Saudi Arabia. It's also 2008: Margaret Thatcher may have looked terrific in a blue power suit, but that was 20 years ago. I do think Americans have moved on from the power-suit mentality, which served as a bridge for a generation of women to reach boardrooms filled with men. Political campaigns that do not recognize this are making a serious misjudgment."

This is too funny.... some old slag like Anna Wintour - relevant in her own mind - thinks she's on the level with powerful American politicians.

Clinton should have shown some more consideration.... but come one... Vogue???
Who gives a crap -- unless it's about the dire importance of this year's 1/4 hem rise.
LOL

"I do think Americans have moved on from the power-suit mentality"

Really? Rush has expressed concern that if Hillary is elected, we would all have to watch the First Executive age. If Hillary appeared in public in a skirt, Limbaugh would dis the shape of her legs.

I'm with Anna! Why does Hillary think she has to dress like a man? Those f*cking pant suits grate on my nerves! She is not a man! Was she afraid Anna would request that she photographed in a dress or skirt? Was it a prerequisite?

And, Diane von Furstenberg claims that she is a friend of Hillary's! What kind of friend is that? DVF is the owner of a multi-million fashion line, most famous for wrap dresses! Why would a friend like DVF let another friend like Hill dress like some dowdy woman?!?!?!? Send this woman some dresses! I don't want to see navy blue pant suits with different color shell tops underneath for the next 2,920 days (8 years)! Like we have to worry about that - Obama/Edwards '08 - but for at least the remaining days of the campaign!?!?!?!?

This is clearly a situation where Senator
Clinton would be damed if she did it - attacked
non-stop. She did the right thing by NOT
appearing in VOGUE.

In addition to not wanting to appear "too feminine" whatever that is, Hillary is correct in avoiiiding Vogue. Readers are the prime targets of advertisers of obscenely expensive goods that have very little meaning to her core constituency. Now if Mitt posed for Vogue, then all his super-rich GOP fans would be impressed.

do you think anywhere in her psyche--anywhere--anna the goddess of the fashion world can comprehend that running for the presidency of the united states, is just a bit more important than a lousy photo shoot for vogue with ms. lievowitz. hey, even the queen of enlgand figured out--almost too late--that being queen of enlgand was slightly more important than upsetting the fashion world!

what a spoiled, egotistical, self-important baby! but definitely in a pink nursery of her own design. let's just call anna--designing baby!

Well Anna you got your moment.
Hillary shows up at work with her top button undone and the pukes in MSM are after her for showing cleavage. Perhaps if didn't have a bunch of vultures watching her every move she could have done your spread and had fun. Instead of understanding that you jump in with the pukes, we'll probably be seeing you on Fox this weekend, maybe hardball. Glory in it Anna, have your vindictive fun. By the way thank you for fighting for the right to an education for special children, you didn't do that, oh yeah, that's right Hillary did.

If Anna Wintour is such an authority on "style," why does she look like the Lee Grant character in the 1975 movie "Shampoo?" Love her or hate her, at least Hillary does not look like she is still caught in the 70's!

Wait, rewind that tape so I can see that picture of Wintour again. That outfit! Lordy mercy,is that supposed to be boardroom style or is she a voodoo priestess? Yes, it is the same outfit that Marie Laveau wore the day before she died. Those beads are so faux and they are the correct colors for Mardi Gras. Hot damn. You coming on down, petite? We sure need some economic stimulus down here and if you could just bring your fashion sense, and maybe lots of your business, we sure would appreciate it. So far, we're still waiting for all them politicians promised to help us.

I don't know how a Vogue photo spread would play. I do think Ms. Wintour has it right though, the real success of feminism would be for women to be able to have power and not act like men. I look forward to seeing Hillary exchange her pantsuit for a ball gown at state dinners and the like. She's a glamorous person and I for one would love to see a Leibovitz spread of her.

Note to Anna Wintour;
Vogue is not the fashion bible it declares itself to be. It is nothing more nor less than the journalistic equivalent of a well dressed pimp. From the totally unwearable clothing to the criminally expensive jewelry, Vogue reeks of pretension and obscene indulgence. A very generous estimate puts it advertising ratio in the 99.5 percentile bracket.
But they have wonderful articles, you say.
Articles? I read one a few weeks ago while waiting to see the dentist. Some Greek princess mooched a vacay at the dacha of a Russian friend. Her worst nightmare happened! The local peasants actually came on the property to pick wild mushrooms! Oh, the horror of it all! Peasants! Whatever is the world coming to when a princess has to grub in the dirt to get wild mushrooms before the serfs dig up what is probably the only meal they'll get that day?
The only valid use I see for this rag is to line either the bird cage or the litter box.
