I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Gimmicks are doing a good job of replacing writers on The Colbert Report, if last night's interview with Lou Dobbs is any indication. Colbert turned the interview on its head with a hilarious conceit of interviewing Dobbs as his Spanish-language counterpart, "Esteban Colberto." Did hilarity ensue? Oh yes — including an in-studio barbed-wire fence, which Dobbs viewed with approval: "It's very impressive, and better than some of the fence along our border now!" Dobbs seemed to be taking it all in stride and enjoying himself, which — update — makes much more sense now that I know Colbert & Co. had dubbed in the answers from Dobbs' Jan 2007 interview. (I admit to having been fooled). Ah well, that's two plugs for Dobbs' book, The War On The Middle Class — he shouldn't be too fussed about it. Though it certainly explains why Dobbs' Spanish was so good. Either way, dancing girls! Clip and gratuitous screengrabs below, courtesy of Comedy Central. We think Colbert rocks a purple blazer almost as well as Cindy McCain. High praise, that. This post has (obviously) been updated...not unlike the Lou Dobbs interview from Jan. 2007. In any case, watch and enjoy the video below. P.S. "Con Cerca" means "with fence," we hope.

Ha! What a riot. I don't know the rules about the union writers but would be surprised if Steven Colbert violated them. If he didn't, I found the whole thing hilarious.

I loved it. I especially loved the part at the end when he said "Lou, dous hombres, dous chicas!"

the translation was quite off in some parts, but overall a brilliant sketch. although i never really know what to make of interviews with dobb and o'reilley outside of their cnn and fox news sets.

Stephen Colbert is a very funny - maybe brilliant - writer. Too bad he's compelled to be a scab. Until I read here that his bits were cut & pasted, I was feeling unsurprised that Dobbs should cross the picket line.
Heard the Amy Goodman Dobbs interview on Democracy Now!, but all I remember is her kicking him up and down the set about his stance on "illegals."

Lou was brilliant. And he pinned the tail on both donkey and elephant. Corporate America is strangling this country and politicians have more loyalty to corporations than they do to the people.

He's married to a Hispanic and is fluent in Spanish and he actually, unlike alot of Americans, worked with migrants.

No human is illegal, but the reality is non Americans coming here to work drive wages down. The consumer benefits from this, but the real winner is the corporation which gets higher profits and the biggest loser is the American worker who settles for less money meaning he is dependent on the low prices of goods because he's making less.

The fence is whitewash. The only real way to clamp down on illegals is to prosecute employers and to mandate a tamper proof ID card for everyone of working age in this country. To work you must present the card. Businesses can't hire you without a card.

As for the 10 to 20 million already here put them on a short path to citizenship. Our nation would stop dead in its tracks if they all pulled up stakes and left.

Very funny. I like Colbert and Dobbs did a nice job of keeping it light. I do find it interesting that, despite how funny it is, this bit is really racist and no one seems to care. Could you imagine if Lou Dobbs created a similar character on his show...you people would go nuts.

Stephen Colbert, John Stewart and Bill Maher for co-presidency. Oh and Joe Biden can be their secretary of state and we can make Noam Chomsky secretary of labor. LOL

Sorry... that's wasn't a gag... but was a written sketch... And Colbert should be ashamed of himself for writing while his writers are on strike... He's now a scab. Talented one, I agree, but he's writing. D.

Someone said it's good to see Dobbs is a good sport!

This is what happens when reality is cut and pasted.

The reaction shots of Dobbs are from an interview he did with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! a few weeks ago.
