Foxattacksvets

It's painfully evident that the zeal with which John Edwards throws himself into the work of standing up for Americans who live in poverty utterly shames Fox's millionaire infotainment celebrity Bill O'Reilly. That's why he's taken to defaming Edwards at every turn, labeling him a "phony" for not behaving as the gentry should - which is to lay back with uncalloused hands and defame the poor for their laziness, I guess. Anything else would be declasse!

So when John Edwards noted the existence of homeless veterans - people who's work for the country couldn't be disputed, O'Reilly mocked Edwards and denied that homeless veterans even exist.

Well, the sad truth is out there, and Robert Greenwald's BraveNewFilms went and found it - the very homeless veterans that Edwards spoke of in his concession speech in Iowa. Not a few of them seem to take issue with O'Reilly's take on the matter. All of them exhibit considerably more class than Fox's bellicose fop.

"We're still looking for all the veterans sleeping under bridges," O'Reilly mocks. What? Doesn't Fox News have cameras and reporters? Oh, that's right! O'Reilly only sends those to ambush people with homes!

It's painfully evident that the zeal with which John Edwards throws himself into the work of standing up for Americans who live in poverty utterly shames Fox's millionaire infotainment celebrity Bill ...

We are a terrible society. The more I listen to the Republican party, the sicker I become. Why are they not rallying around the troops? Why do they say they support them when we all know it's a lie? Why do we keep letting them get away with murder?
Most "civilized" and not so take care of their own. We throw them away. How can you say that you are a Republican in this day and time? How can you ignore all that is wrong with our country? You guys sicken me.

When we talk homelessness, we always look at individuals and see "them" as broken. Here's news kids, we're all broken. Certainly, some have more problems then others.
Here is the societal difference we never talk about; loss of single room occupancy housing, truly affordable housing for very low incomes. This is a historical problem the government made some attempts to address until the Repubs came to power argueing the govt had no business in mental health or housing. With a mind to "clean up skid row" a push was made around the country to close residential hotels and rooming houses and gentrification was on. SRO housing has been more then decimated around the country. That great big government spending program known as the GI Bill only made loans for new home construction. Inner cities were emptied. That great big government spending program paved the way for two generations of American prosperity. It also sowed the seeds for hollowing out the urban cores.
We have always had mental illness, poor education, developmental disabilities and drug abuse. we eliminated the housing they used without coming up with an alternative other then shelters. The plan for deinstitutionalization called for appropriate housing and supportive services. It never happened. The Repubs argued such programs were a waste of government money. Recent history shows the result of their cutbacks was only a cost shifting. It is more expensive leaving people on the streets then helping out with housing and related services. It isn't just the cost of shelters. It is the emergency room utilization and intersections with the criminal justice system and the use of related social services that could be ameliorated by creating affordable housing for very low income people. It isn't only more humane, it is cost effective to provide services. We need code/zoning reform. We need incentives for the private sector to create the housing. And most of all we need the political will to turn back the nimbyism that amounts to a hatred of the poor.

O'Reilly is just a little chickenshit chickenhawk that never had the balls to serve.

Come on "Billo" take the vet up who challenged you to spend just ONE night sleeping on the streets.

"Billo", you are just a disgusting piece of shit!

As long as there is one homeless veteran, or for that matter, any homeless person on the streets of our nation, we, as a society, have failed.

Use them once and throw them away, there is a new generation coming along. With all these suicides that are occurring among the recent vets, there will be less young men and women begging on the streets That is the attitude of the regime running this country. Thirty years ago, as Viet Nam vets were returning, our government, under Reagan, shut down mental health facilities across the country. This is when I first observed homelessness, involving men, women, children, and entire families. In this bare knuckles capitalism of the last several years, there is nowhere to go for help. In the nineties the Clintons, with the help of their Republican friends eliminated the so called welfare system. There is a class war going on, tax cuts for the filthy rich, and prison, the military, or the streets, for the poor. Tell me again, how does this war benefit me?

Who are the homeless? Veterans, single women, children, the mentally ill, dope addicts, the sick and the poor. This pool of humanity is growing larger by the minute because of Republican policies that favor the rich and big business. Remember the Republican campaign word "Compassionate". That is another pledge that was broken. It ain't happening.

Lets force the Republicans to adopt policies that "float all boats, instead of just the yachts." or elect Democrats that will.

Even the most hardhearted and selfish of Bush supporters should see the failure of the Party policies and not just blame the Bush administration itself. He is just doing what he thought you wanted.

Edwards is the only candidate that is talking about this. Indeed, he is the one who brought it to national attention. Wouldn't it be great to have a man like this as President?

D.C. is full of homeless vets. They like to stay close to the government that has failed them so miserably and to take an occasional leak on the pristine lawn of the White House. More money is spent on that frickin lawn than to feed and house the homeless of D.C. If O'Reilly really cares, he needs to take a look at his own capitol. It is disgusting and shameful.

I know there out there dealing with there night mares the only way they can and our government let them down when they really needed help . this is how our government takes care of there men in uniform
after there done with using them for there disgusting war,s used and abused does not even come close may I remind America about agent orange they sprayed our own men and when they came back sick they denied there was a problem one of many things our government has done look at first gulf war veterans 450,000 sick from a ten day war did Americans cry foul NO! they did not! did they march in the streets and demand answers NO! they did not ! did they as concerned Americans start a fund too care for them No!!
we did not we don,t support our troops and we never have so many men have been Isolated turned away by veteran hospitals though out our great country and we hold our head so high and mighty and say we are the greatest country in the whole wide world it makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about there mistreatment
we as a country have lost our way a long time ago and have cared not to find our way back to a humane center we care only for our selves and what we can get regardless of how it hurts the other guy or our own dirt .if this was no so there would be no homeless vets or any homeless people for that matter no toxic dirt that makes our children sick no poisoned water etc etc etc I wrote my congressman Mr Hatch from Utah about those 450,000 vets sick from that ten day war . I would be addicted to some pain killing drug too if I was treated like our good men and women have after seeing things the human mind was never meant to see it fractures the mind and saps the soul!!!!{ War } and we call our selves civilized go figure !!!

If the bush mob were taking care of the vets added since Janurary 2001 there would be ABSOLUTELY no reason for Non Government Organizations to exist to take care of veterans needs.

If you'd like to support the troops, here's one way:

Please take a minute to sign the open letter to Bill O'Reilly, and join me in calling on him to set the record straight. Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) has made it easy - just click the link below.

Thank you!
