LAS VEGAS — The White House campaign has brought a new act to Vegas.

Democrat Barack Obama tried to use humor to cut down rival Hillary Rodham Clinton before Saturday's presidential caucus. His "Iowa nice" approach gone, Obama debuted a biting political standup routine Thursday night that mocked his rival, and employed it again on Friday.

Obama began by recalling a moment in Tuesday night's debate when he and his rivals were asked to name their biggest weakness. Obama answered first, saying he has a messy desk and needs help managing paperwork _ something his opponents have since used to suggest he's not up to managing the country. John Edwards said his biggest weakness is that he has a powerful response to seeing pain in others, and Clinton said she gets impatient to bring change to America.

"Because I'm an ordinary person, I thought that they meant, 'What's your biggest weakness?'" Obama said to laughter from a packed house at Rancho High School. "If I had gone last I would have known what the game was. And then I could have said, `Well, ya know, I like to help old ladies across the street. Sometimes they don't want to be helped. It's terrible.'"

"Folks, they don't tell you what they mean!" he said. Obama chuckled at his own joke before riffing on another Clinton answer in the debate, when she said that she is happy that the bankruptcy bill she voted for in 2001 never became law.

"She says, 'I voted for it but I was glad to see that it didn't pass.' What does that mean?" he asked, again drawing laughter from the crowd and himself. "No seriously, what does that mean? If you didn't want to see it passed, then you can vote against it! People don't say what they mean.

"You know what I'm saying is true," he said, then addressed his routine directly at audience members who don't know who they will vote for yet. "Undecideds, remember now, remember what I'm saying."

He continued by responding to a new Clinton radio ad that accused him of having financial ties to supporters of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site that most Nevadans are loath to come to their state.

"I have said over and over again I'm against Yucca," Obama said. "I'm against Yucca Mountain. I think the science is not there. I've never, I've never been for Yucca. Never been for it. Never said I was for it.

"Suddenly you've got the Clinton camp out there saying, `He's for Yucca.' What part of I'm not for Yucca do you not understand?" he said, then laughed along with his audience.

As the laughter subsided, Obama drove home the broader point he's been trying to make against Clinton the entire campaign.

"Those kinds of tricks, that kind of approach to politics is what has to stop because what happens is then nobody believes anything," Obama said. "The voters don't believe what politicians say. They get cynical. Folks in Congress, they'll tell you they're looking out for you _ they're looking out for somebody else. We have to change that politics and that's why I'm running for president."

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer retorted with a dig at Obama's experience.

"Judging from his act, it doesn't sound like Senator Obama has much experience doing stand-up either," Singer said in a statement. "Nothing says change more than using jokes to distort his opponents' records."

Obama repeated the routine Friday in Reno. "This is political speak. This is what you learn in Washington for all those years of experience," he said. "It's funny except it's sad because it means the American people are constantly having to sort out what people mean."

Humor is a tradition on the Las Vegas Strip and in presidential campaigns because it's a way to score a point without sounding too negative. President Bush used it to skewer John Kerry in 2004 as fancy and soft on terrorism, while Ronald Reagan was one of the best at wielding one-liners.

In a 1980 debate Reagan sidelined Jimmy Carter's criticism with a dismissive "there you go again." He answered questions about his advanced age in a 1984 debate by saying he wouldn't make an issue of Walter Mondale's youth and inexperience.

What snarky reporting.

Obama isn't trying to be funny. He's making a point. He told the truth, both of them obfuscated. Hillary's started it anyway. The next day, in every interview, she talked about Obama saying that he is too disorganized to be President because of his honest answer.

Have any of you told the truth about yourself to someone and then they go and use it against you with someone else? That's called a back-stabber. Hillary's just like all the rest. Nothing special except she has no credibility. Her record is barely visible and her accomplishments even less notable.

What I cannot understand is why Clinton & Obama are at each others' throats???

C'mon, they're both Democrats!! Save the rhetoric and nasty retorts for when they may really be necessary... in the general election. Use intelligence and political savy, both above board, to win the nomination.

Of course, having Obama and Clinton go at it, destroying themselves in the process, may be just the thing Edwards needs to win the nomination. And, it could be just non-personal banter, getting each other ready for the crap the Republicans will throw at our candidate.

I would like to mention a proposal I heard someone espouse on NPR... make them a ticket. Whomever wins, have the other be their running mate. That will certainly shake up US politics, having the first black and woman as a team in the White House. Of course, they'd have to win in November. The Repubs will be a force to contend with since they've "won" in both 2000 and 2004 under suspicious circumstances and may not be above anything to win again, at any cost, in Nov.

Onto the rest of the primaries.

How can Barack attack Hillary like that? Doesn't he know that it's going to take a white liberal President to enact the kinds of things he wants to do. He should understand that he belongs to the same race as MLK and we know that those people are powerless to make change unless there is some benevolent white President, some person who isn't like those black orators, preachers, and idealists, but a level headed common sense white person who can actually do the things that black people can only dream about. I know this is true because Hillary said so on 'Meet the Press.' and while we're at it, Bob Johnson's got me wondering just what was Obama doing down there in the 'hood'? Couldn't be up to no good, that's for sure.

Glad the Clintons don't play the race card though.

Maybe Obama and Hillary can become a double act.

Meanwhile apart from the wild ambition of both lets get back to avoiding a repug win.

Repugs = poor economy and social injustice.

Repugs = fiscal irresponsibility massive government.

Repugs = exploding deficit running at 7% of GDP/ year.

Repugs = profligate bastards.

I like Obama answer about the messy desk.Makes him seem more down to earth. Now Clintons answer about being impatient to bring change. Maybe thats why she voted for the war she was impatient. That brought change but it wasn't best for America.

The evildoers have said time and again that they're going to destroy the USofA from the inside out. Now, what better way to do that than to have one of their own as president of the USofA.

What this country needs is a man who's already saved this nation once before from muslim evildoers. A man who knows all muslims want all Americans killed dead.

That man is Rudy Giuliani and he's the only candidate running who has pledged to kill all muslims before they kill all us Americans who so love freedom, democracy and Old Glory.

I received my mail-in ballot. I'm ready to vote in the California primary.

I heard that 37% of votes in San Diego will be by mail. I don't know what the percentage is for the whole state.

When is Bush

Going to apologise

For not reading a PDB?

When is he going to catch the ringleader? What's his name again?

Just because people laughed, doesn't mean it was a 'stand-up routine'.

Maybe, just maybe, Hillary's negative principles are simply laughable.

I will be posting this on a regular basis without apology. The senate is soon to be considering the renewal of the FISA bill and Telecom Immunity.

Be without a doubt: the purpose of Telecom Immunity is to frustrate the discovery process implicit in the forty some lawsuits being lodged against the telcos, thus shielding Bush from the evidence of his crimes that would inevitably come out

The list of villains in this is long and depressing. Jay Rockefeller is certainly the first among equals. Reid is rotten to the core. Feinstein is an embarrassment, and for some reason Sheldon Whitehouse is not on the side of the angels.

Meanwhile, all three of our candidates are strangely silent.

Dodd appears prepared top continue his fight, but he needs our help. And this likely will be back at the house, so you may need to turn your attention there soon.

A full and brilliant analysis of this is at Salon, Glen Greenwald at his best, and very current.

Very much worth your time. Please act.

You know, in a job interview you're not supposed to answer that "what is your biggest weakness" trap question honestly either. You're supposed to say, "Well, I guess that my undying devotion to the company causes me to forget about taking breaks, so after 12 hours I can only give about 98%."

It took us a mere 3 months to f*** Iraq.

Its gonna take us decades to undo the mess we made.

Just like the economy.
