Evangelicals Key To McCain's Fate In South Carolina

Columbia, S.C. -- Senator John McCain is well positioned in today's South Carolina Republican primary to strengthen his credentials as the de facto leader of the GOP establishment, but to do so he must fend off a populist white evangelical insurgency led by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, widely admired as an exceptionally skilled stump speaker.

McCain began the day ahead or tied in all but one of the last minute surveys of Republican voters here. But the wild card in this race is the unpredictable turnout level on this foul-weather Saturday -- rain and snow across the Palmetto state -- of the huge block of white evangelicals. These deeply religious voters have the numbers here, but not necessarily the unity, to give the financially strapped Huckabee a second win to reinforce his January 3 Iowa success. One of the last 15 state polls showed Huckabee ahead of McCain.

In past years, the South Carolina Republican primary has been a pivotal and often determinative event in the selection of a presidential nominee. This year, however, the South Carolina outcome is much less likely to clearly signal the winner at the Republican National Convention. Mitt Romney's victory today in the Nevada GOP caucuses ensures that the Republican contest will continue to Florida on January 29 and on into "Tsunami Tuesday" on February 5 when an unprecedented 22 states will hold caucuses and primaries.

Huckabee demonstrated his rhetorical talents at a gathering late Friday night here in Columbia, his last event before the polls opened this morning.

Joking that "in many ways, I'm like a lot of people in the United States: I'm a guy over 50 looking for a job," Huckabee went on to demonstrate that he stands alone among the Republican presidential candidates in addressing his message directly to the working and lower-middle class whites whose abandonment of the Democratic Party over the past four decades turned the GOP into the majority party across the South.

"If you are the guy in the corner office in a large company, [the economy] is probably doing great," Huckabee told the crowd. "But if you are the guy serving the food, the one driving the truck, if you are the one handling the bags -- quite frankly, you ask those folks, they tell you it's not so good -- because many of the people who work so hard, who are living from one paycheck to the next, who are literally one paycheck from not being able to pay the rent, one paycheck from not being able to pay for their kid who falls in the playground and breaks his arm, one paycheck from not being able to put gas in the truck -- for people who are struggling in the middle class, the economy has been a challenge."

While McCain most often appears in comfortable suburban venues with an armada of national and local figures -- Senators Lindsay Graham and Tom Coburn, Jack Kemp, state Attorney General Henry McMaster, state senator John Courson -- Huckabee is the first Republican candidate with 16-time World Wrestling Entertainment champion Ric "The Nature Boy" Flair as a warm-up speaker. Huckabee's advance men have shown a predilection for setting events at downscale barbecue restaurants.

Over the past month, Huckabee first surged in polls of South Carolina Republicans, from fifth place to, for a time, a solid first place. Over the past two weeks, however, he has fallen behind McCain, largely for two reasons: McCain got a major boost from his January 8 New Hampshire win, and the struggling campaign of Fred Thompson made a last ditch effort to get on track here. While well behind and tied for third place with Romney, Thompson did make gains, and the data suggest that virtually every point Thompson picked up came out of Huckabee's hide.

Thompson's appeal to Huckabee's voters, according to observers here, forced the former Arkansas Governor to shift from his own version of compassionate conservatism and to start using hard-line wedge issues such as the Confederate flag and immigration to win these voters back.

In addition to calling on "outsiders" to stop telling South Carolinians to take down the Confederate flag -- a symbol of racism to many black and some white voters -- Huckabee has sent out a mailer boasting of support from high-profile anti-immigration activist Jim Gilchrist: "Minuteman Founder Endorses Huckabee."

Many Republicans have avoided ties to either Gilchrist or to the various organizations claiming the title of Minutemen. Their armed border patrol activities prompted President Bush to declare, "I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America."

This admonition has not restrained Huckabee, for whom a win in the South Carolina primary is crucial to reviving his bid and accelerating the flow of cash to his financially strapped campaign.

For a site that proports to be progressive, it is odd that the McCain win on the same day is getting larger hype on HUFFPO than the Clinton win in Nevada. It is unusual that the GOP race is getting better product placement. Is the MSM's antipathy for Hillary great enough to champion the GOP? How progressive!

If the VOTERS choose Clinton, will the media start a "civil war", as Howard Fineman warned on MSNBC? Are the pundits and so-called journalists running for Star Chamber, LLC? Does the media get to choose a President?

Just a quick news flash and totally off topic.

Sarkozy for the first time [after only 9 months) has seen his popularity drop from

A high of 65% favourable

To a score today of 47% favourable

With 52% unfavourable.

Finally the French are beginning to realise he is but a sad joke.

A president playing a dictatorial playboy wont work here.

It's cheered up my Sunday no end.

;)

Now on topic.

I cannot wait to see the repug slaughter in the swamp, it should be fun with four loonies in contention.

Go Huckabee

that far right Evangelical influence on our political system is DYING.....THANK GOD! or whomever you want to thank....

you have no idea how significant this is

SCREW YOU HUCKABEE...what a frickin phony!

The only and I mean the only merciful thing, and I mean the only thing about McCain winning South Carolina is that Huckabee didn't. Dear God, is this really the best the GOP can really do? I've slowly lost all faith in the GOP and I really think they went totally crackers in 94 and again in 00, and the presidential candidate lineup looks like a bad hypothetical high school election exercise.

Every time McCain wins a vote, I throw up a little bit into the back of my mouth.

Who here thinks George W. Bush would win a third term?

-crickets chirping-

Exactly. And among all the possible candidates for President, John McCain is by far the most similar to Bush. He's practically his twin on the issues that matter most.

He's a warmonger, a la Bush. He's for 1000 years of war, if that's what it takes. He's hawkish toward Iran. Most Americans think going into Iraq was a mistake, in hindsight. Iraq is plummeting as a priority for voters. Who wants a candidate that dominates the 7th or 10th most important issue to the voters, and loses badly on the first 5?

And then contradicts his tough stance on Iraq by wanting to close Guantanamo and bring the terrorists here and give them ACLU lawyers. He'll alienate his own voters with such crazy talk.

When it comes to domestic issues, McCain has a very poor record.

He's absolutely horrible on illegal immigration. Bush's twin. He couldn't do worse if he tried. This is why his campaign burst into flames over the summer. It should have stayed dead. He hasn't budged one inch. He's as pro-amnesty as ever.

He's also on board the Global Warming bandwagon, so who knows what sort of disastrous treaties he would sign there? Heaven forbid if he accepts the crazy suggestion that we 'lead by example' and kneecap our own economy while China and India laugh all the way to the bank.

He voted to give China most favored nation status, and permanent normal trade relations, so we haven't got a chance of balancing our trade deficit. He's a self-avowed free trader, which obviously includes labor markets with his amnesty plans. "If we can't ship your job overseas, we'll bring the workers here..." Our leadership of the world economy will be a distant memory.

McCain is just an older, crankier GWB. He'll be destroyed in an election the same way Bush would.

posted earlier on another thread...

For all the 'sturm und drang' ginned up over the GOP primaries by a breathless press, they still exhibit all the gravitas of an episode of Monty Python's "Ministry Of Silly Walks".

Jeebus-talking Taliban-In-America whackos, Bush-leg-humping war mongers and an aging, stereotype character actor still on the hunt for Red October.

Gotta admit... Republican voters need some good old conservative compassion from the rest of us, left OR right. They're just not gonna BELIEVE the stain they leave when they hit the wall in the general.

And, just as I had predicted two weeks ago, those phat GOP pursestrings suddenly loosened, and McCain, financially energized, takes South Carolina.

But if you put him in the pit with Mitt and the Huckster, who will the ill-bred mutts of the GOP choose as their Alpha dog?

Stay tuned...

the repubs continually prove that they are imperialists and war mongers.

they want a guy that wants to be in iraq for 100 years. hey that will quell the terrorist threat.

and obama wants to bring them together with all america. right and hitler was a kind gentle person.

obama is living in la la land. this country is divided almost as much as during the civil war.

yes we come together after a terrorist attack but that is only to make war to satisfy americans lust for war mongering and wars for profits.

change will only happen when a majority of americans realize we are imperialists and many are war mongers and that corp. fascism has taken over america.

solution send all the politicans in wash dc to gitmo for a long r and r and while they are gone move wash dc to the middle of america and elect all new politicans and put term limits on congress.

also send all the lobbyists to russia and let them lobby putin. he will know what to do with these blood sucking greed is good lobbyists.

John McCain is a war hero. I respect him for the five years he spent in NVA captivity and I admire his energy as he is up in years. I do worry that his experience in Vietnam, more especially his captivity, might be a reason to worry about his complete mental health. Is there a possibility that he has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is it a reason to worry that his disorder (if he has it) associated anger may get our country in trouble? Or render him ineffective at times while serving as president, if elected. I think this is a worthwhile area of inquiry and a subject that John McCain needs to talk with the country about if he continues to seek the presidency.

GOD, I WOULD TEN TIMES RATHER SEE ROMNEY GET THE NOMINATION...

Than McCain. Romney is kind of the LEAST BAD of the Repuke candidates? I don't take a Democratic victory in November as being at all a sure thing, and I'm thinking who would make the "least bad" Republican President, just in case. Here's my ratings--

1. Romney

2. Paul

3. Thompson

4. Giuliani

5. McCain

6. Fuckabee

Romney was at least a semi-decent gov. of MA (for a Republican and other than the Big Dig and mandatory health insurance). You kind of didn't know he was there....

Limpy McFatass on Huckabee and McCain:

RUSH: I understand what you're saying. I hate to tell you this, but she's not alone. I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys get the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party, it's going to change it forever, be the end of it. A lot of people aren't going to vote. You watch.
