LOS ANGELES — The creature-feature "Cloverfield" became the first monster hit released in 2008, debuting with $41 million, a record opening for January, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Paramount's tale of a giant reptile causing chaos in New York City surpassed the $35.9 million premiere weekend of the "Star Wars" special edition in 1997, the previous best for January.

Opening in second-place was 20th Century Fox's romantic comedy "27 Dresses," starring Katherine Heigl as a perpetual bridesmaid. It pulled in $22.4 million.

The weekend's other new wide release, Overture Films' crime comedy "Mad Money," with Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes plotting a Federal Reserve Bank heist, opened at No. 7 with $7.7 million.

Overall business surged, with the top-12 movies taking in $135.3 million, up 39 percent from the same weekend last year.

Featuring a cast of unknowns, "Cloverfield" tells its monster story from the perspective of a partygoer's hand-held video camera, which captures the mayhem as the creature tears through the city.

The film benefited from cryptic marketing that sent young moviegoers on a scavenger hunt to decode clues about the movie's plot, images and even its title, which was not confirmed until shortly before its release.

"As we started it, we asked, how do we draw people in and have them say, `Hey, I want to know more about that. That looked cool, that looked intriguing,'" said Rob Moore, Paramount vice chairman. "Then fortunately, they delivered a movie that was as unique and engaging as people had hoped from the marketing campaign."

The big winners at the previous weekend's truncated Golden Globes had mixed results cashing in on their prizes.

Focus Features' gloomy romance "Atonement," the Globe winner for best drama, expanded into wider release and added $4.8 million to its haul, raising its total to $31.9 million. Business was up slightly from the previous weekend.

Yet the Globes' best musical or comedy winner, Paramount's "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," also added theaters but took in just $2.6 million, down significantly from a weekend earlier. "Sweeney Todd" has taken in $48 million to date.

The televised Globes banquet was canceled because stars planned to boycott the show in support of a strike by the Writers Guild of America, which refused to let its members work on the ceremony. In place of the glitzy Globes show was a hasty news conference rattling off winners' names.

That deprived studios of much of the luster they count on to boost the box office of acclaimed films during awards season. Had the three-hour Globes show aired as usual on NBC, "Atonement," "Sweeney Todd" and other key winners might have done better business this weekend.

"I can only guess, but I think so," said Jack Foley, head of distribution for Focus Features. "I wish it was televised. It's one of the best commercials there is for film."

Following Heigl's success with last summer's hit "Knocked Up," "27 Dresses" solidifies the "Grey's Anatomy" co-star as a big-screen star.

While "Cloverfield" was more a movie for young males, "27 Dresses" sewed up the women's audience, the two films giving Hollywood a huge lift during what is normally a sleepy time for new releases.

"This is almost like a summer weekend," said 20th Century Fox distribution executive Chris Aronson. "It's almost a counter-programming move where you have two pictures aimed squarely, at least initially, at different audiences, and they both succeeded."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Tuesday.

1. "Cloverfield," $41 million.

2. "27 Dresses," $22.4 million.

3. "The Bucket List," $15.2 million.

4. "Juno," $10.3 million.

5. "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," $8.1 million.

6. "First Sunday," $7.8 million.

7. "Mad Money," $7.7 million.

8. "Alvin and the Chipmunks," $7 million.

9. "I Am Legend," $5.1 million.

10. "Atonement," $4.8 million.

Don't fret, Katie. Hubby Tom will have his Scientologist thugs hook you up to the E-meter and all those nasty Thetans surrounding your movie will be released. Soon you will be "cleared" and all will be wonderful. If your new baby has any medical problems, the Travolta's will be happy to lock him up with their son, so those unenlightened doctors can't harm him. Hail Xenu!

Cloverfield had some good action sequences, but overall it was terrible. Horrible, unlikeable characters in an introductory sequence that dragged on far too long. By the time the monster attacked, my friends and I had lost interest, and it was an uphill battle to win us back.

It got better, but by then we were already irritated.

KatE is in trouble if she thinks she can ride the love of the Minivan sect to box office success. They have a new heroine. As of this week, Suburbanites move Katherine Heigl, who knows how to cater to them far better than KatE does.

Heigl has pretty much grabbed the crown of the actress America loves.

I am in the motion picture business and I have learned that you can never accurately predict the success of any film. The public wants what it wants...and that "want" is continually changing and evolving.

If cute made an actress we would have millions of them. Being Mrs Tom doesn't make her any better than that either. He has made some really truly horrid movies and I doubt often he has anything of a talent in him either. Together they make ok pictures in the tabloids not too wonderful movies. Sad to think she was ok in the tv but thinking like many before she could do better as a "star" in the big screen. May be time for another kid.

Cloverfield was not a film that I would choose to see, but I have a 10 year old son, a Godzilla freak. He went through the entire internet marketing challenge and knew more about the film than I thought anyone would reveal. The acting was not great, but not awful. You only saw what the characters saw. The monster only shows a few times and only a couple of times do we get a big picture glimpse of the creature. I thought the touch of the monster ripping the head off the Statue of Liberty was a nice touch. It immediately sets you up. At once, you think Al-Quaidazilla. Unlike Godzilla or King Kong, you have absolutely no sympathy for this monster. When you really analyze this movie, you see how much of the producer's TV experience came into play.
I smell sequel.

The sad part about Katie Holmes is she is 'attractive' but nothing spectacular. Nothing to set her apart from the crowd. No doubt the reason she chose to hook her wagon to Cruise's in the hopes he could help her overcome being mediocre! In a world full of glamor girls she is at the bottom of the chart when it comes to beauty! It doesn't help that she tries to look sensual. That just makes her look ridiculous. She has the 'girl next door' image that she needs to foster or she will fall flat on her face despite Tom.

Katie Holmes can't act, I think that is the general concensus. With Tom as husband though, she will be in movies, but will anyone want to spend 10.00 to watch? Lifetime TV is more her speed, with Tori Spelling and older TV has beens.

JUNO was the best movie. Saw it here down under a lot of young people walked out when they realized that it was not another Super Bad.

Where were the Thetans, and Tom Cruise's amazing power, to help Mad Money take the #1 spot? How about in the top 5?!?!?

Cloverfield beat a Star Wars movie ... and no nerds had to wait on line for hours, dressed encostume.

PS -- Mad Moneys is NOT a "Katie Holmes Flick." She's third banana. Damn, I just defended Katie Holmes; gotta go lie down ...

I enjoyed Cloverfield. I think they really fell down at the end because there was a more obvious (and better) place to end it when the camera was trying to focus. It felt like they were trying to spin it out a bit longer by tacking on the end and a few members of the audience I saw it with were commenting that the movie was great but the end was lame.

I think they got the tension right and the music throughout was very good. (even the Jaws-like theme moment) I did get very tired of the single cam perspective after about 1/2 an hour and I thought there were too many jerky camera pointed at feet moments but during the major scenes, that one camera really worked.

I had no desire to see Mad Money or 27 Dresses. They look like they'll be fun timewasters when they're on my movie channel for free but there really isn't any reason to see a movie like that on the big screen.

I've heard from so many friends that the Bucket List is great that I've decided to see it next although the critics have panned it. Almost everyone I know who saw it this week did so because of a recommendation by a friend so it's getting great word of mouth.

So apparently Huffpost has developed some sort of catty grudge against Katie Holmes. Why is that? I've only seen her in Batman and Wonderboys, and I don't pay attention to celebrities' private lives. So I don't know what she did to you that would warrant this crowing over box office totals, coupled with that pouting talk-show photo.

Wow, she looks like the 'person' has been removed from her body. She looks very rigid and automaton-like. Maybe she's inhabited by one of the body-snatchers.
