In a speech today at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.served as pastor, Barack Obama talked about the existence of institutional racism, the sensationalizing of race "by the media" and the creeping of race as an issue into the presidential campaign.

But Obama's speech will likely be remembered for his calling on the black community to do its part to fight homophobia, anti-Semitism and xenophobia.

Obama says in the speech: "We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters instead of embracing them," and "the scourge of anti-Semitism has, at times, revealed itself in our community," and "for too long, some of us have seen the immigrants as competitors for jobs instead of companions in the fight for opportunity."

For those of us who believe in God, our present election was foreshadowed many years ago in the Bible,
Saul a.k.a Bush was to be replaced and God asked Samuels to find his replacement,
1 Samuel 16:6 (New International Version)
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord"s anointed stands here before the LORD."
1 Samuel 16:7 (New International Version)
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart
Further as Samuel continued to search for the replacement, he was told,
1 Samuel 16:18 (New International Version)
18 One of the servants answered, "I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him."
Then as David asked to be sent out to confront Goliath
1 Samuel 17:33 (New International Version)
33 Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth."
Finally when David confronted Goliath this is what happened
1 Samuel 17:42 (New International Version)
42 He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him.
Obama seems like he was born to wear the mantle of David. Having a white mother and a black father.

Obama is going to tackle homophobia after taking Donnie McClurkin on a tour of South Carolina.
Hypocrisy comes to mind. Sorry Obama you're an empty suit tattered and torn.

I've had it with the Clintons, with their lies, their deceit, their divisiveness at all costs. I will never, ever vote for Hillary Clinton because of the continuing lies she and her husband are telling about Obama. Yes, I voted for Bill twice and for every other Democratic presidential nominee over the past 25 years. This is what her critics mean by "she isn't electable". The Clintons just don't get it.

I guess obama took a call from AIPAC.

Very disappointing. Such transparent rubbish.

I wonder if European Jews in America are giving speaches about their own racism towards Blacks, Arabs, Muslims, Christians.

This is just absurd. Whatever ground he gained with Black voters is now in the toilet.

I think it is hilarious when Obama says he is a product of the American Civil Rights movement.

The dude's father was a doctor from Kenya. His mother was white. He spent his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia, probably two of the least racist places on Earth. During his formative years, he went to white boarding schools.

Obama ain't no product of 400 years of slavery and indentured servitude in America.

Obama is like our first foreign presidential candidate, he is so far removed from the American experience, black or white.

Was this speech written by the 26 year old "white" guy?

Nice, using Martin Luther King's Day, and his church, to give a political speech!

Real smooth!

A week or so ago I heard Rush Limbaugh play a sound clip on his show in which Obama used the word, "intentionality." Limbaugh went on to make fun of Obama for using a non-word in the way Rev. Jackson has sometimes been known to do.

Of course Rush was wrong. Intentionality is a word that was coined in the late 1800's by a French philosopher.

I bring this up to demonstrate how close to the surface racism is in many people. Limbaugh assumed that a Obama, a Harvard-educated, U.S. Senator, black man couldn't possibly know a word he, Rush, a white ex-shock jock without a high school diploma, didn't know.

When you think about it, it is remarkable that Obama has managed to get as close to the nomination as he has so far.

Obama's has done the right thing here...and in the right place too. Even Dr. King and some of his associates were homophobic in varying degrees. Of course, that was 40 + years ago....but just like racism....that doesn't make it right does it??...............................tm

It is wonderful that the Huffington Report gives news coming out of Iraq about Iraqi casualities, but why does Rachel Sklar, the editor of this website, continually censor the news of continuing Israeli atrocities against the Gaza Palestinians? Over the past two weeks, there have been about 100 Palestinians killed by Israeli missles. These killings, as John Dugard a UN official recently said, are against international law, and in the process many civilians, including women and children, have been killed as well.

You don't have to condemn the Israelis Rachel-- you don't have to include any commentary on these attacks, one way or another. Just report them as any other respectable blog, including the Drudge Report, does.

Looking at the comments on this board, I realize that Obama can not do anything without people denigrating him. The man went to a black church and actually asked them to reconsider some of their attitudes. That takes guts. And yet, I see "He's pandering because he worked with McClurkin" or "His speech-writer is white, so". Hillary has a speech-writer, as well as any other politician. I've seen so many Clinton supporters on here say that he's playing the "race card", yet please tell me where he advocates his race as a criteria for voting for him. Yet, I can name examples of nationally syndicated articles (like Gloria Steinem's) that advocate voting for Hillary, because it will break a glass ceiling for women everywhere. That's the "Gender Card", if you're blind.

I'd vote for Hillary if she is elected, because I don't want a Republican, but I sincerely hope that all of you who just want to denigrate Obama because you feel that Hillary is so much more "electable" will realize that you are giving more reason for other needed demographic groups (Blacks and those under 40) reason to consider changing parties or not voting. And believe me, you need their vote.

GO OBAMA!

I am so tired of HO-MO NO-MO, I am tired of being a second rate citizen, I am tired of being told that I cannot have equal rights, that I cannot marry who I want, I am tired of being told that I am the blame for America's ills, and that God does not love me or I cannot love God! I am tired of it.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was my hero since I was a boy. Today I am painting a painting of him to honor him and I will put it in my February show and call it AMERICA"S HERO. It seems reasonable to me that Afro-Americans should support the struggle of gays and for equal rights and opportunities for gays because most gays and I have supported equal rights for them since the beginning. Free at last, Free at last!

My, my, my....the super-analysis of Obama's speech in these blogs is stunning. What he said..when he said it..why he said it..why he said it over "here" and not over "there"..he said it on Monday but not on Tuesday..he said it today but not last year...he said it in front of this audience but not that audience...he really didn't write the speech so he can't take credit for it....
Had just a fraction of this kind of analysis of the words of George Bush taken place over the last 7 years and quite possibly the country wouldn't be in the s***hole it's in right now.
