Too Much Caffeine May Increase Miscarriage Risk

Too much caffeine during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage, a new study says, and the authors suggest that pregnant women may want to reduce their intake or cut it out entirely.

Many obstetricians already advise women to limit caffeine, though the subject has long been contentious, with conflicting studies, fuzzy data and various recommendations given over the years.

The new study, being published Monday in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, finds that pregnant women who consume 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day -- the amount in 10 ounces of coffee or 25 ounces of tea -- may double their risk of miscarriage.

Pregnant women should try to give up caffeine for at least the first three or four months, said the lead author of the study, Dr. De-Kun Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif.

Don't believe it. Baby boom moms smoke, drank, coffee too, worked in factories, fields, etc. Just because you're pretty much a wimpy generation don't make the moms give up coffee too.

I am pregnant with my third child, and I have drank caffine throughout this pregnancy, taken Tylenol for headaches, Zantac for severe heartburn, and antibiotics for the various pregnancy-related infections I have incurred, and my unborn child is perfectly happy, healthy, and ready to be born in just a few short weeks. Listen to what your doctor tells you and do everything in moderation, and you should be fine. I hate when they do these studies and scare pregnant women even more than they already are!

Moderation in all things. Coffee is not meant to be a drug that carries us through a day - coffee should be enjoyed.

They used to say that about horseback riding, driving, playing sports, and sex during pregnancy.

Honest to Pete, I'm all for being healthy, but doesn't it all boil down to moderation?

My obstetricians had a rule, as in no caffeine, when I was pregnant, and that child is now 28 years old.

From the time that we started attempting to have a baby, they said no caffeine, no cured meats, no sodium, fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk, vitamins, and no alcohol.

At the time he was born, one could not get no-salt canned vegetables, and fresh fruits and vegetables were limited in the winter, as globalization had not exactly hit, so I had to eat frozen vegetables, not canned, when fresh ones were not available.

Pregnant women just need to be very, very careful in order to give their babies a good start in life.

I love caffeinated beverages-especially coffee-but I see them for what they are- which is more a drug than a food.

When we realize that substances like caffeine and alcohol are drugs and stop kidding ourselves about alleged health effects we will have taken a step forward.

Enjoy these substances but realize you are taking drugs that may cause harm.

How soon will it be before pro-life protesters start picketing Starbucks?
