From Ben Smith: Not sure what prompted this, but Al Gore has quietly released a video with a forceful endorsement of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. It pushes the Democratic establishment that much closer to a position he now shares with Eliot Spitzer and some other leading Dems, and is prompting a bit of grumbling in gay political circles that this batch of candidates aren't quite there.

"Gay men and women ought to have the same rights as heterosexual men and women -- to make contracts, to have hospital visiting rights, to join together in marriage, and I don't understand why it is considered by some people to be a threat to heterosexual marriage," he says on the video, which appears on his Current TV network. "Shouldn't we be promoting the kind of faithfulness and loyalty to ones partner regardless of sexual orientation?"

It's a shame that Obama, Clinton, and Edwards don't have the guts or the desire to treat gay people as equals. It's a shame that Gore can (or will) only say this now, after he has quit running for office.

What would Jesus say about gay marriage? I could picture him at a gay wedding and the host being upset that the wine was running low at the celebration. Jesus would tell him to go gather the water pitchers and woola he would turn the water into wine! Jesus would then say congratulations! , go and celebrate , and "save me a piece of cake" .

Fine, Al, but I'd rather hear you tell us to pull the wool away from our eyes and help us to recognize that marriage is by definition a religious ceremony and once we get religion out of our legal system we will no longer treat people un-equally in violation of their constitutionally guanranteed rights, and so every contract, including domestic partnerships would be equally protected...and enforced. But no...I'm disappointed, it reminds me of the voice you use when addressing a black congregation and a blatant attempt to smooth over and mime the wishes of your host, but it is a step in the right direction.

We should be kind to gays and let god decide the

issue. Jesus did no say, "Kill all the gays"

["Democrats don't have the brains to keep these wedge issues quiet UNTIL after they take control of the federal govt.."]

So you're in favor of lying to the American public to get elected.

You must be a stinking Republican.

I am not sure why Gore is coming out now to push gay marriage.

Most liberals are in support of civil union which is equavalent to a marriage without being called a marriage.

Non of the Dems running are in support of gay marriage-except Kucinich.

I think we need to let this topic rest where it has been before it surfaced. We don't need any distractions.

When is "The Goracle" going to endorse Obama?

He surely can't endorse anyone who voted for the Iraq War.

It really is a same that Al Gore isn't running. He is the most qualified person to be president. He was right on the war. He's been right on global warming. He's right again on gay marriage.

Oh well.

Thank you, Al, for everything you've done for our world and all the people in it. You amaze me with the integrity, drive, and courage you've shown. You tell the inconvenient truth, backed by irrefutable data, and show us the path to heal and make things better. I'm so grateful that you are still fighting for the people, our environment, peace, justice, and true civil liberties. Thank you for speaking out in support of gay rights, including the right to marry!

Al brought me to tears with a barnburner speech about Bush. He said how hurt he was after 9/11 and that he initially gave his full support and trust to Bush in hopes he’d see us through that dark time. Then Al yelled, "He betrayed that trust!" Now we have a number: 935 lies leading up to a senseless, unjustifiable, illegal war replete with torture, which has left our country financially and morally bankrupt. Thanks to Bush we have a crumbling economy, record high gas prices accompanied by record high oil company profits, alienated friends, strengthened foes, a culture of fear, a right wing Supreme Court, and crippled civil liberties. Everyone in the world was ripped off by the Supreme Court’s selection in 2000.

If Al had been in office for the past eight years, none of us would believe how bad things "would have been" if Bush had been selected.
