From Ben Smith: Not sure what prompted this, but Al Gore has quietly released a video with a forceful endorsement of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. It pushes the Democratic establishment that much closer to a position he now shares with Eliot Spitzer and some other leading Dems, and is prompting a bit of grumbling in gay political circles that this batch of candidates aren't quite there.

"Gay men and women ought to have the same rights as heterosexual men and women -- to make contracts, to have hospital visiting rights, to join together in marriage, and I don't understand why it is considered by some people to be a threat to heterosexual marriage," he says on the video, which appears on his Current TV network. "Shouldn't we be promoting the kind of faithfulness and loyalty to ones partner regardless of sexual orientation?"

The president America deserves. The president America will never have.

Here is a novel idea: maybe the government should get out of the marriage business entirely. Let people register any valid contracts they want with the state. The state should only get involved when there is a breach of a legitimately-made contract.

Notice what he did there? Al Gore leaves the political field, wins a Nobel Prize, and becomes a Democratic superhero.

Bill Clinton leaves the political field, returns, and becomes a sorrowful shadow of his former self to at least half of us.

Oi.

Many of us have been posting comments for months that Al Gore enter the race for the White house.
It has been my contention that we can see a deadlocked convention and with LOUD VOICES the Democratic leadership will turn to the man who won the White House once.
Al Gore could do something WAY different this time.
He has the luxury of speaking out this time and not really caring weather he wins or loses for he can't lose an election as sadly as he once did.
This kind of freedom can lead to a candor in American politics unlike any we have ever seen!
And so we Americans will have a CLEAR choice.
Either we follow the disasterous Republicanism of the last 7 years or make a REAL change of direction.
If he wins we will know that America has regained his sole.
If he loses, then we will contiue to get what we have been getting over the last 7 years...lies, thievery, and a trashing of our civil liberties.
G-d bless Al Gore

Hillary has a similar stance on this issue to Obama's they are both for Civil unions, not marriage.

Kucinich is the only one for Gay marriage. I'm with Kucinich and Al on that.

Maybe straights are afraid that we gays and lesbians will do marriage better than they do, just like we do everything else better! LOL Just kidding.

Thanks Al for throwing yourself out there in support of equal rights for my brothers and sisters. We appreciate your effort as we fight for what is ours, especially in light of some presidential candidates embracing the homophobic religious group. (Yes Obama, I'm talkin to you and your one-trick pony McClurkin!)

I keep asking how two gays marrying would affect my marriage of 51 years, but still haven't received a response. To me, it seems that divorce is more harmful to the family unit than two people who love each other getting married. Just thinking of how divorce hurts the children in these marriages, leaves me wondering how the rabid Right Wingers can justify ignoring that fact.
