WASHINGTON - A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat.

"The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.

The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

"It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida," according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003."

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

The center said the study was based on a database created with public statements over the two years beginning on Sept. 11, 2001, and information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches and interviews.

"The cumulative effect of these false statements -- amplified by thousands of news stories and broadcasts -- was massive, with the media coverage creating an almost impenetrable din for several critical months in the run-up to war," the study concluded.

"Some journalists -- indeed, even some entire news organizations -- have since acknowledged that their coverage during those prewar months was far too deferential and uncritical. These mea culpas notwithstanding, much of the wall-to-wall media coverage provided additional, 'independent' validation of the Bush administration's false statements about Iraq," it said.

Poor GOP.... the truth in all its ugliness is being uncovered by its enemies so now it sends out its trolls to attack the messengers and bury the message...
Too late. You can't put it back in the box once its out there.
Cheney and co lied to us. That is the issue. Not who found out, not who proved it. We were lied to. Congress was lied to.
Doug Fieth helped manufacture the lies and Rove and Cheney and Dubya and co told them.
And they tried to do the same thing with Iran.
They lie, people die.
Meanwhile the GOP struggles to understand why they are now the bad guys... Fanatics led by business...
So they blame the "liberals" and they use the term to mean anyone who doesn't believe the lies...

It's funny because Richard Nixon was nearly impeached for crimes relating to burglary, petty theft and withholding some of his recordings.
Whereas, this guy (Bush 43) is a total embarrassment to the American Presidency, lacks wisdom, has no accurate idea of current affairs, has blatantly lied to US society and the world, yet he still the US President.HE TOOK THE US INTO WAR BASED ON LIES, and those of us who accused him of lying were labeled unpatriotic and un-American. This just reinforces the notion that politics and policy are no longer in the hands of the citizenry, it’s all in the hands of the private sector, lobbyist, small interest groups and this presidents cronies.

ADD ON - Maybe we should require that all candidates take a lie detector test with questions submitted by the other candidates to get all the lies and inuendo out of the way. Then when we have a real debate only questions on real issues would need to be asked since we already got all of the nasty stuff out of the way! What do you think?

Whoever gets in the Whitehouse should be made to either name names or at least the credentials and agendas of the people they will be appointing to key positions in the gov't after they take office. Also, they should state what qualities the judges they name will possess; tough on crime, immigration etc. Also, they should be required to state what their priorities will be and lay out what they will do to accompolish thier task. Now all we hear is I will fix the Health Crisis, I will be tough on border issues, I will beef up Homeland Security, I,I,I,I,I, !!!!!!!!! What are the plans?????????????????

Leaving aside the false implications and cleverly worded conclusions, would this be a good time to suggest you research the bias in the backgrounds of the authors and organizations involved?

Yes, Bush&Co are pathological liars!
This delusional, divisive idiot is/has been quite obviously out of touch with reality, common sense and good judgment! The boiling pot of war in the ME is primarily HIS MAKING; his and the Zionist Neocons of AIPAC,PNAC, the AEI and others, who are in defacto control of his administration; they cooked the "intel" on iraq, falsified and manufactured the case for war and now are busy getting us into the next phase of their long standing PLAN....wars without end in the ME...with Iran and Syria, they already have destabilized Lebanon. For right-wing ideology, profit, Zionist belief and greed, they would kill MILLIONS...STEAL $Billions$ from the civilian sector to further feed an obscenely bloated military....and create hatred between us all and further divide our nation and the world.
They have already taken Iraq down this path...from a relatively stable (but brutal) secular dictatorship to a Hell on Earth killing field...all for lies, greed, politics and pathologically twisted ideology!...and bush denies any responsibility....or even that there IS A PROBLEM! This was/is NOT rational, sane or wise.

Bush, Captain President Queeg, must be brought down, before he and his handlers bring us all down!
No one took the strawberries, and no one wants another war...except madmen, the Neocon traitors and the Israelis.

And how many reiterations of those lies since the war began? Beyond counting, I'd wager.

Notice the insistence by Bush's latest mouthpiece that the WORLD thought Saddam had WMD. No it didn't. The Bush administration and select lapdogs did. A handful of countries hardly qualifies as the WORLD. Yet, in the mind of many Americans, it does. America IS the world. Just listen to these yahoos, who have never stepped foot in a foreign country, proudly declare that America is the best country in the world. It's moronic to use a comparative, best, when one's stable of travel experience is limited to a single country. It's like saying the one and only woman you ever boned is the best lay in the world.

This sort of egocentrism shall be our undoing, and I don’t mean the world.

The most stupid president in U.S. history, George Bush:

- Planned and executed the 9/11 attacks.

- Diabolically orchestrated a worldwide campaign of lies, beginning in the early 1990s, about Iraq's WMD that fooled literally every major intelligence service on Planet Earth.

- Cleverly connived Bill Clinton to enact the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act.

And in the end, only $oro$, Kos, Blix and B. Hussein Obama were able to withstand Bush's evil Jedi mind tricks.

The WMD evidence was the reason that Bill Clinton supported sending the UN weapons inspectors in for ten years. Piles of invoices and receipts with thousands of international companies for WMD devices and research.

Terms for Huffpost readers to learn about:

1. UN Weapons Inspectors
2. UN Iraq Sanctions
3. UN condemnation of Saddam
4. Clinton support to depose Saddam
