WASHINGTON - A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat.

"The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.

The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

"It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida," according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003."

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

The center said the study was based on a database created with public statements over the two years beginning on Sept. 11, 2001, and information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches and interviews.

"The cumulative effect of these false statements -- amplified by thousands of news stories and broadcasts -- was massive, with the media coverage creating an almost impenetrable din for several critical months in the run-up to war," the study concluded.

"Some journalists -- indeed, even some entire news organizations -- have since acknowledged that their coverage during those prewar months was far too deferential and uncritical. These mea culpas notwithstanding, much of the wall-to-wall media coverage provided additional, 'independent' validation of the Bush administration's false statements about Iraq," it said.

Who could swallow the 935 lies the Bush administration told, vote for the war, and have the nerve to say she didn't make a mistake?

Hillary "I'm entitled to be President because I had to put up with a lying philandering husband for so long in front of the entire world" Clinton that's who.

Although I agree with this article whole heartedly, I did a little minor research (wikipedia) and see that the founder of this non profit organization is Charles Luis who apparently came from 60 minutes back in the eighties. Again I agree with him, but I know that my idiot Republican friends with access to the internet are going to do the same simple leg work that I did.

This article is great to email or show to people who are not bent on defending our Commander in Idiocracy.

President Bush has lost his moral bearing - Osama Bin Laden got in his head and he acclimated himself to a false reality.

Bush and his crew exagerated the threat that Hussein represented. They also underestimated the effort needed to stabilize Iraq after the invasion.

They are both liars and incompetents. The result is a Fiasco.

False statements>? Did they lie?

Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002 --"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country."

Nov 25, 1997,
"..Iraq has secretly stockpiled enough deadly poison gas to kill everyone on Earth despite nearly seven years of international inspections," Defense Secretary William S. Cohen

July 22, 2003 Former President Bill Clinton
“Let me tell you what I know. When I left office, there was a substantial amount of biological and chemical material unaccounted for.. it is incontestable that on the day I left office, there were unaccounted for stocks.. of biological and chemical weapons...We should be pulling for America on this. We should be pulling for the people of Iraq.”

Oh, yea - that really got the press talking?

Clinton's Sec Defense William Cohen in April, 2003 -- “I am absolutely convinced that there are weapons...I saw evidence back in 1998 when we would see the inspectors being barred from gaining entry into a warehouse for three hours with trucks rolling up and then moving those trucks out." --

SEN. EDWARDS, 2004: "For the same reason a lot of people were wrong. You know, we—the intelligence information that we got was wrong. I mean, tragically wrong. On top of that I’d—beyond that, I went back to former Clinton administration officials who gave me sort of independent information about what they believed about what was happening with Saddam’s weapon—weapons programs. They were also wrong. And, based on that, I made the wrong judgment.

To see Commander Codpiece's WH winning strategy, all you have to do is read the troll comments on this thread and it all becomes painfully clear how he got where he is.

"You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on."-George W. Bush

Even he's laughing at them.

That's a lot of lies, but honestly I would have thought there would have been more. Practically everything that ever comes from this administration is not to be trusted. I'd as soon hand my wallat to a con artist as believe anything this administrations says. They lied us into war? Yeah no sh*t.

One of the most disturbing deeds was the MSM letting these lies go on and on, and often assisting the lies. Jim Lehrer, PBS, gave a terrifying answer to Bill Moyers on this subject. To paraphrase, Lehrer said it was not his job to question lies. He would just provide the platform to the administration and others would have to discern the veracity of the statements.
Of course Lehrer was shirking his job as a journalist and as a public servant. Bill Moyers looked shocked on hearing Lehrer's response and I felt betrayed.

Another Soros funded effort?

Comments are a dime a dozen:

'Hardball with Chris Matthews' Nov. 7, 2005 (still believing it in late 2005)

Senator Carl Levin (D) of Michigan, a member of the Intelligence Committee

"- look there was plenty of evidence that Saddam had nuclear weapons, by the way. That is not in dispute. There is plenty of evidence of that."

So all of the statements that were backed by US and foreign intelligence turned out to be wrong. Those aren't lies. 20-20 hindsight is a wonderful thing. Even I can predict the outcome of an event after it happens.

What's sad is that so many of us knew these 900+ statements were false and yet Hillary Clinton still gave Bush the green light to invade. Either she was incredibly stupid or just worried about looking weak on national security. Either way, she has no business being commander in chief. Anyone who can support such a foreign policy blunder shouldn't be commanding our armed forces.

This is a perfect example of how Americans in general do not pay attention to what their government is doing. Not many joined Americans in the march to war. Sure the world community viewed Hussein as a threat. But he was generally contained and al Qaeda had no viable presence in Iraq. If Americans had known any historical background of how Iraq came to be Americans would have understood the complexity of overthrowing Hussein. BUT AMERICANS ARE PEOPLE MORE INTERESTED IN BRITTANY SPEARS AND PARIS HILTON. Americans has gotten what Americans deserve. A corrupt government that has benefited thier weathy donors. Bush/Chaney will leave us with a recession, a record breaking deficit, and a war with no end. And all they had to do is say FREEDOM and GOD a few times. AMERICA IS STUPID COUNTRY. Except those of you who read the Huffington Post.

One way to prevent this type of atrocity in the future is to impeach Nancy Pelosi for her crime of blocking the US Congress from fulfilling its duty.
