Candidate's mother acting very un-C-SPAN on C-SPAN:

Q: How much support do you think he has among the base of the Republican Party?

Roberta McCain: "I don't think he has any. I don't know what the base of the Repub-maybe I don't know enough about it, but I've not seen any help whatsoever."

Karl Rove is responsible for making these Evangelical whackos the base. Their every wish and dream has been pandered to. Terri Schiavo. Embroyonic stem cell veto. Backing of gay marriage amendment. Rove favored these knuckledraggers and had Bush publicly call them the "base." This favoritism did not go unnoticed.

The Terri Schiavo incident was the beginning of the end of the Reagan coalition. The incredible partisanship to the Revival Tent Republicans has led to the main rupture between the Southern social conservatives and the Western libertarian Republicans. The pretense was over. And with it, the GOP lost the Senate and thankfully the two leading Revival Tent Republican Presidential hopefuls, Santorum and Allen.

Roberta McCain's observation is accurate. The revival tent Republicans started believing their own press. They make up at best one third of the GOP and without the moderate and libertarian wing of the GOP they are incapable of winning national elections. And right now, the Republicans that are not considered the base are involved in taking down the religious whackos.

The Dems have an opportunity to win and win big in 2008 and probably hold power until 2016. Provided of course that they don't nominate the one person who has the power to reassemble the Reagan coalition for one more time.

Wishful thinking by Mama McCain. If he wins the nomination, he will be unable to distance himself from the christofascist neocon agenda of the GOP base. I haven't seen any indication that he wants to in any case.

OUCH!

The truth hurts. McCain HAS supported Bush 100% on every substantive policy for the last 8 years, including the immigration disaster. She sounds like Republicans are ungrateful jerks.

The truth is that Bush was 100% wrong on numerous issues, which made McCain 100% wrong as well.

I for one don't think Bush would be re-elected if he could run for a third term. Why would Republicans think that Bush's twin McCain would?
