Bill Clinton just staged a passionate defense of his wife here, after a voter asked how Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton could unite this country when it is so split, politically and racially, and when she is such a polarizing figure.

The question unleashed an attack against the Republicans and an unusual assertion that Mr. Clinton had somehow escaped those attacks (has he forgotten so quickly?); he said he understood the right-wing bullies because he grew up with them. And he said that when they "didn't have me to kick around anymore," they went after his wife...

... He also said that Mrs. Clinton had worked with Republicans, including Senator Lindsay Graham, Republican of South Carolina.

And then he painted this scene: "She and John McCain are very close," he said. "They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history and they're afraid they'd put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other."

McCain and Clinton are both owned by many of the same special interests - no presidential election is going to be "civil", but they all seem to be a choice about the lesser of two evils... which is what a Clinton-McCain election would be - two candidates that take their marching orders from the military industrial complex... more war, more imperial conquests, more disastrous foreign policy.

The $700 BILLION (overwhelmingly approved) defense budget congress sent to Bush, in light of the economic mess that exists in this country, is nothing short of immoral.

I'm sure it (McCain vs. Clinton) would be more civilized than the current Clinton vs. Obama battle. That's for sure.

I would rather have a candidate that is running as a populist than a candidate who is not. JRE is being who he really is. If JRE had run as a centrist like the Clintons he would probably be winning now. I am proud that JRE decided to be who he really is, and to quit trying to be a repug like Obama and the Clintons.

What Bill meant was that if the race is between McCain and Hillary, then the Neos will already have won so there will be no need for them to pull off any ultra-dirty tricks.

I'm sure this must have been 'said' somewhere in this thread,....

But of course they would be civilized - what topics do they differ on to toss at each other?

You would have the corporate war-monger on the Left running against the corporate war-monger on the right. Two candidates that only real differences are on 'family values' topics, and the levels of pork that Congress should be allowed to put into bills.

If these two are the options for President,... might just be time to look seriously into moving to Canada or Australia again.

If Bill says this, then he must secretly be hoping for a Clinton McCain showdown.

Probably the reason is that despite his flaws, McCain does have a semblance of honor, which was why Bush-Rove were able to destroy him so easily the last time he ran. McCain will be deluged and bewildered under an onslaught of innuendo, half-truths and outright lies.

The Clinton smear machine, honed and practiced with their recent attacks on Obama will make hamburger out of McCain.

Two affable “civilized” warmongers, what could be more telling than a ridiculous statement like Wild Bill just made.

This is the basic core problem of the Clintons, like McCain they saw nothing wrong with invading Iraq, and after several years of lies, misadventures, “collateral” damage and no WMD they again both saw nothing wrong with the “Surge”.

Sure they will have a civilized general election if these two triangulation, obfuscating, Arab baiting, double talking warmongers are the nominees.

McCain is a soft-spoken, senile, bitter, hateful old man who never met a war he did not wholeheartedly embrace.

Hillary is a little more tactful than the old madman, she is much more deceitful in the way she panders to the electorate.

Not only did she vote to give a pathological liar permission to invade Iraq but she also supported her vote with the most vile saber rattling since Dick Cheney spewed his rhetoric on the Tim Russert republican hour.

The Clintons are even more dangerous for this country then the admitted warmongers on the republican side, because they make it impossible for the average voter to really know where they stand on the war.

They weave, they bob, they lie and in the end they are proven failures. Once again they are telling us that Universal Health Care is the most important issue facing Americans.

Almost 16 years to the day they were saying the same things in NH 1992, we gave them 8 years to accomplish that goal and they were both dismal failures.

Now they want us to believe that this time they will succeed, when in fact the only thing they succeeded at during their term in office was to adopt the Gingrich plan, the Contract with America.

Obama you make me proud to be an American again.
Kick ass in SC the state where the civil war began, the world is watching and waiting for a fresh start and a new beginning.

With at least seventy five percent of Americans against the war in Iraq it is hard for me to believe these two war mongers are doing so well in the polls. I believe are next president has already been chosen, it will not be by the people once again. The powers that be are in control of the media, the polls and decide who will and who will NOT be allowed to debate. We are currently on a path that is not in our control or in our best interest. What once was America is fading fast.

This headline is nothing more than a fairy tale from the perspective of a former president looking for another 15 minutes if fame.

Memo To Bill Clinton: You're still not fooling anybody. And after Monica, we really don't need to give you 15 more minutes. You should be in Hollywood. With that vivid imagination of the the mythical right wing conspiracy, you'll make many more millions off the sheeple that follow you blindly.

Here Billy boy, educate yourself:

As I live in Europe, it seems that Bill Clinton is becoming more and more a candidate to the US election, he's to Hillary what Cheney is to Bush Jr.

Bush Sr : 4 years
Clinton : 8 years
Bush Jr : 8 years
Upcoming Clinton ?
Upcoming Jeb Bush ?

The Usa has become some kind of royalty ?

I think what Bill is really saying is 'we don't dare try to roll the old war hero like we did the young black man.'

One question...

When did "War Mongering" and "Avarice" become civil?

In this sense, Clinton and McCain are two peas in a pod, civil, NOT!
