Five former Nato generals, including the former chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, John Shalikashvili, have written a "radical manifesto" which states that "the West must be ready to resort to a pre-emptive nuclear attack to try to halt the 'imminent' spread of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction."

In other words, the generals argue that "the west" - meaning the nuclear powers including the United States, France and Britain - should prepare to use nuclear weapons, not to deter a nuclear attack, not to retaliate following such an attack, and not even to pre-empt an imminent nuclear attack. Rather, they should use them to prevent the acquisition of nuclear weapons by a non-nuclear state. And not only that, they should use them to prevent the acquisition of biological or chemical weapons by such a state.

I think you'll find that once a law (international or domestic) is deemed QUAINT it is no longer applicable.

Constitution - Quaint
Bill of Rights - Quaint
Habeas Corpus – Quaint
Geneva Conventions – Quaint

Recognize a pattern anyone?

This is nothing new. We Americans have never cared about international law except when it suites us.

Generals like and want wars, that's why they're generals. Besides it opens up career opportunities for military officers, especially.Someone once said "that war is too important to be left up to the generals", and that's why the president is their commander and chief, of the military not of the country.

The Geneva accords are too antiquated, and so is our own Constitution.

The need for perpetual and preemptive wars have been recognized and

the other side must not have WMDs. Orwell and Huxley would approve!!

Sounds good to me, so long as we hold the Israeli's to this first and foremost. Everyone knows the Israeli's have nukes, but they won't admit it, the USA won't admit it or any other ally of theirs. So when it's revealed publicly, and can't be denied, that Israel has nukes..... they best be busting their asses to carry out this plan and nuke the shit out of that peice of worthless desert. ;)

Well if it's against international law to go after a regime seeking nuclear weapons before they get them, then I'm all in favor of changing the laws. I'd also like to change a few of our laws that are plainly stupid as they are currently applied, but what could be more ignorant than to observe laws that are not working? In a world where exceptionalism is claimed for everything from 'americans right to guns' to 'islam's right to treat its women barbarically and other religions even worse', the issue of nuclear weapons proliferation is truely exceptional and to fail to recognize that is plain old ignorance..which coincidentally pours money into the pockets of not so scrupulous patriots in dozens of regimes around the world.
I should caution that I'm also in favor of having a lot more transparency, by law, and decisions like this legal only for international deliberative bodies.
Oh, and I like ice cream with every meal and a solid gold toilet.

The logical conclusion of the paranoid quest for ultimate military security.

Kill all throughout the world, foreign AND domestic, who threaten, or may theoretically one day threaten in any way, the absolute military dominance of the Pentagon --
and whoever remains can finally be "secure".

As a former nuke weapon specialist, and among the first four techs deployed with the NEUTRON bomb, MK66, 25 years before the people even knew we had such a weapon, and a spy, I say this is the time to realize that the worldwide cultural revolution is justified and lucky for humanity, already underway. Politics, religion, government, and nationalism are obsolete. Its about saving humanity now, so to quote Wyatt Earp: "Justice is coming & hell is coming with us."

Bear in mind that the "Generals" are in the business of war. They are merchants of death holding a pre-armageddon sale. It is all about oppression and nothing more which fits with the goals of the New World Odor. Unless they can show that blowing up our trading sources on a whim can produce a windfall profit, the current cruds in the White House will veto the plan.

To be charitable: the authors of this statement appear to be confused. That often happens when civil servants try to think out side the box. This statement resembles one of former Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld's snowflakes. Rumsfeld's legacy of confusion lives on.

A much better solution would be for all people and nations to respect the rights, religion and way of life that has been chosen by these people.

in order for this to happen the "LEADERS" must realize that they are not gods or anything close to gods. Of course King George the turd and his minions Dickless chumpy and the rest will never agree.

Doesn't this proposal violate international law ?

Isn't this a conspiracy to cause death and destruction on innocent civilians?

Do these guys write for Marvel Comics ?

You think this is bad, you should see what the International community is saying about it.

I think we have officially crossed over to the WWIII plan Bush had in mind. In progress.

An insane dictator and his zealots:

a) Isolate their country from the International community

b) Hijack their media

c) Imprison/threaten their population for speaking out. Targets them for death (blowing up our media stations in Iraq was one of them)

d) Denies citizens dignified means to earn a living, unless they agree with the ideology or are part of the "movement"

e) Break existing laws & writes new ones to keep them in power

f) Lies to the population - promotes psychological warfare to silence dissidence

g) Is willing to sacrifice their population in war & annihilation for their own goals

h) Destroys existing government to build up a new-less cumbersome government aimed at controlling the masses.

So, is impeachment back on the table yet? Or do we wait for the nukes to start coming our way?

What right-wing "think" tank came up with this plan of action, and how much influence will its members have over the next POTUS if he's a Republican?
