WALLINGFORD, Conn. — Some students at Choate Rosemary Hall, the prestigious prep school attended by John F. Kennedy and Adlai Stevenson, are protesting the choice of former presidential adviser Karl Rove as this year's commencement speaker.

Some plan to walk out, while others are trying to bring comedian Stephen Colbert to campus for an alternate speech. The campus newspaper has urged the school to reject Rove.

"It's really just a minefield," said Benjamin Firke, a senior who opposes Rove's visit.

Others said they're interested in what Rove has to say but are not sure the school's June commencement is the best venue because they are afraid he will overshadow the graduates.

"The man is great at what he does," said senior Alessio Manti. "It's just that it's not his place to be the one who shepherds us into the world."

Choate trustee Bruce Gelb, former ambassador to Belgium, helped secure Rove as the speaker after plans fell through for a speech by Sen. John Warner, R-Va.

Rove declined comment Friday through his attorney, Robert Luskin.

Before leaving the Bush administration last year, Rove, one of the most influential presidential advisers, came under scrutiny in an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's name.

Mary Verselli, Choate's director of strategic marketing and communications, said Rove was invited to talk about broader issues, not deliver a political speech.

Headmaster Edward J. Shanahan said he looks for interesting and provocative commencement speakers and Rove has prompted more discussion than any speaker in the past 20 years. Shanahan met with seniors this week to talk about their concerns and asked them to e-mail him with their thoughts.

"This is their day, and I want them to play as much a role in shaping it as we can," he said. "If we can accommodate their wishes within the context of Mr. Rove's arriving here for commencement, that would be something I'd like to pursue."

Senior Peter Borgstrom is among the students looking forward to Rove's speech.

"Maybe I don't agree with his political views and what he's done, but I'd still love to get the opportunity to see him," he said.

Carl Rove is a college drop out. Does it make sense for him to deliver a commencement address? Rove is the master of identifying the weaknesses of voters and pandering to them. He is also a master of character assignation. What else has he done? I hope the selection of Rove is for the purpose of opening the wallets of the school's Nazi alumni. Otherwise its just plain stupid. Either way it is an insult to the graduates.

Rove is just an average american. What is disliked about him is what we dislike in ourselves. No one is perfect. Hitler actually was an average german. Perhaps the greatest lesson anyone can learn from Karl Rove is how to not fall into the same corruptions and political traps that he did.
We all do what we have to do to survive. great power entails great responsibility and good judgement. If we fail to meet up to these requirements. Then like Mr. Rove and all small minded politicians we resort to basic survival instincts and that not a pretty picture. What we don't want to see in Karl Rove is what each of us must at some point come to terms with in ourselves.

So the headmaster of Choate is looking for "provocative" speakers. Then, why not invite someone even more provocative than Rove, such as Ann Coulter?

If I were a graduating senior at Choate, I would look on this commencement as an opportunity to pelt a NeoCon with rotten eggs.

Most of these wonderful students are at Choate on legacy points-- some on merit alone-- the legacy ones and the merit ones would have done better with Bobby Kennedy Jr. Kath Townsend, Patrick Kennedy, even send in poor Ed Cox from N.Y. but not carl rove-- the ancestors and dead alumni will be roving in their graves to have a neo- con speak..

Switch on your pee detector and let the man speak!

Then, ignore every word he utters and go wash your boots!

I would have liked it if the student just tossed bags of gooey shit at him during his speech.

How in the hell would a person introduce Karl Rove as commencement speaker? Name just one honorable and truthful fact that could be said about him. . . "I give you the Bush family's long-time hitman who has succeeded as a man with no ethic whatsoever, no principle he won't betray, and no law he won't break in order to get whatever he wants." I think they call people like Rove "sociopaths".

When I encounter someone who still defends the bu$h admin or KKKarl (which isn't often because I try to avoid the fanny pack wearing walmart crowd) I know in my heart this is an untrustworthy person. Why defend liars and thieves if you aren't one yourself?
Hey kids, save all your rotten fruits and vegetables for throwing that day.

It would suck to be forced to hear words of encouragement and advice for your future from a known traitor.

If Rove shows the students should engage in passive resistance.

And Rove should be in prison.

Yea, a traitor speaking at commencement.... If he has time to do that he can answer the call of his country and respond to the repeated requests for his presence in front of the Judiciary committee.... what an asshole.
