Speaking after Sen. Barack Obama's victory in South Carolina, Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., all but credited the wide-margin of victory to a backlash against the injection of race in the primary by Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Appearing on MSNBC, the third ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives said voters had "recoiled" to the proliferation of racial politics in the election.

"I'm not surprised at that at all," Clyburn said, when asked about Obama's big win. "Because I really believe that in the last 48 hours the voters recoiled. They decided to reject the racial animus they seemed to be developing and I'm so pleased."

Clyburn, who did not endorse a candidate, did not name names. But the implication was fairly obvious. Earlier in the week, Clyburn expressed a sense of disappointment with the Clinton campaign's tactics and urged Bill Clinton to "chill" with the race-based politicking. And in an interview with the Huffington Post, the congressman suggested that the former president's aggressive campaigning could be damaging his long-term reputation.

According to MSNBC exit polls from South Carolina, 74 percent of African-American voters and 68 percent of white voters say they believed that Clinton unfairly attacked Obama.

Later in his interview, Clyburn reverted back to his now-customary refereeing posture, complementing both candidates for being able to reach voters across the politics spectrum.

"I've checked on some of the white precincts and they are voting, in favorable numbers for Mr. Obama," he noted. "And I checked in rural precincts and I think Mrs. Clinton is doing a relatively well there... These people knew that the economy needed some kind of help. They knew that these candidates represent to them some kind of hope for the future. And they were voting their hope, their dreams, their aspirations, and they didn't care about all of the stuff that we were talking about for the last two or three days."

I'm personally at a loss for how "race" has been injected into this campaign by those nasty Clintons. I was watching Bill Maher last night, with a black reporter on showing her visit to a black beauty parlor and 6 black women who all supported Obama and had various negatives to say (this was called "diversity" incidentally...that there were various negatives(!)) about Clinton. Am I missing something? Weren't blacks questioning whether Obama was "black enough" 6-8 months?? Hasn't the press been going on and on about polls asking whether we are ready for a black president...what we can learn from the vote in SC where 50 of the populace is black etc etc. And meanwhile...apparently using "fairy tale" in the same sentence as "Obama" means a black man has no chance. I don't know...a lot is going on, and the media is orchestrating quite a bit of it...the rest of the effort is being carried by us dupes. (hope that didn't sound "racial" *sigh*)

To the guy who suggests the MSM is part of the Republican plot to put up an easy opponent, that may be true. But, that is only considered 'smart' if it works. If it backfires, then there are lolz all around as the precident is set. If I wanted a canididate to run against, it'd be Hillary, so I could bring up Mark Rich, Monica, Vince Foster, the Secret Service tapes the Clintons are fighting to keep secret, Jennifer Flowers, and Clinton letting Osama live to cause 9/11. Now, I'm not saying the Clintons are guilty of any crimes or that any of those accusations have merit, but it's not about whether something is true (ask Kerry who was swiftboated); it's about whether they can get the media to harp on it for months leading up to an election. And that stuff is just the tip of the mountain of dirt that falls on Hillary if she wins the nomination. Factor in gender bias and the country's distaste for another dynasty and it's not Obama that's the easy mark.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Carolina

South Carolina has a total population of 4,300,000 of which 30% are Black and 70% are White. This means there are a total of 1.2million Blacks in South Carolina. Obama got a total vote of 280,000 of app. 500,000 cast in today's election.

Last week the Republican total vote was app. 450,000.

Only via the exit polls are we being told that 25% of Whites voted for Obama and that 80% of Blacks also voted for him. I don't believe the exit polls, they haven't proven accurate.

It is evident from the total number of African Americans in S. Carolina - 1.2million that app. 25% showed up to vote for Obama total, or roughly the full amount of his 280,000 vote.

South Carolina has gone Republican in all the elections except when Jimmy Carter in neighboring Georgia carried this state.

There is no evidence that Obama is still not marginalized to the Black vote only. Perhaps another state primary will actually tell the full story. But, I suspect that African Americans turned out in mass for Obama, and that is the true story of the day.

Totally no reason to think different. In the finalize analysis, this remains a Republican state in November of 08.

Race has been injected into this campaign by the Clintons and their supporters. We’ve all seen Barack’s immediate family, his wife and two daughters. What I would also love to see, front and center, are pictures of Barack as a boy and young man with his white mother and his white grandfather. This guy transcends race.

More like voters were absolutely and successfully manipulated by SOMEBODY’s use of race. Obama’s victory was helped along by the media, his most formidable surrogate which does all his dirty work. HuffPo no doubt is giving itself a big pat on the back. But you know who else was favored by the media? Who else wasn’t held accountable for anything until it was all too, too late?

“I own a lumber business? Would you like some wood?” Remember him?

Almost 55% of the total voters in South Carolina were African American, 80% of those voted for Obama.

45% of the voters in South Carolina were Non African American about 22% vote for Obama.

Not sure those results are good for Obama.

I Agree with " whichchange" it's only racist when whites do it. When blacks do it it is only supporting the Brother.
There was no surprise tonight. The Democratic party base in the south is 80% black and they voted for a black man but it wasn't racist. Hey Obama is going to win EVERY southern state.
Get used to it.
The Dems are once again going to lose in November as they are giving many,in the minds of many voters, a reason to not vote for them one black reason and one gender reason.
Disaster in November looms for the Dems as McCain will be the winner.
The MSM is much to blame for ignoring the only unifying candidate Edwards.
But the MSM is owned and run by rich Republican conglomerants and they want OBAMA to win so he can be beat.Notice all the media attention he gets? Smart very Smart.
Be sure and read Frank Richs column in tomorrows NY Times or maybe here on HP.

The coverage of this election is so bias it is beyond belief. The injection of race by the Clintons ? That is rediculous on its face and for the poor fools who buy it shame on you.In Mr Obamas victory speech all he did was talk about race.

Seems to me any fair accounting of the vote would appear to indicate an ethnic vote on the part of black Americans in SC. No problem folk can vote for whomever they want but if you believe that race has been injected into this primary, as everyman and his dog is claiming it would appear that everyone is racist both black and white.

If 80 percent of whites voted for a white candidate in an election with a serious black candidate such as Mr Obama what would we call that ? If Mr Obama is now only carrying 10 percent of the white vote we have a serious problem

I dont know what black leaders hope to gain by infering the Clintons are closet racists and as such I would assume so to their suppoters. Edwards and his suppoters must be racists too because they are all white and he recieved 5 black votes.

IF Mr or Ms Clinton gave the speech that Mr Obama gave tonight it would be derided as a racist tirade against that poor black man Mr Obama.
Funny but I think this primary Dem nominating process is going ensure the Republicans retain the Presidency in Nov.It seems with Mr Obamas candidacy there is only a place in the Dem party for whites whom support his run, because if you support another candidate you must be supporting race baiters and as such are a racist.

That is a good winning stratagy on the part of the Obama campagin.

Given that Mr Obama and his supporters think we are all racists, and blacks comprise 20% of the party he has 16% of the vote wrapped up, his 10% of the remaining 80 % means his number is around 24% now.
The whip count suggest he does not have the votes.

The only people interjecting race into anything now a days are the media. The Clinton's, are just that, the Clinton's. Hill should tell Bill to get lost, she would have a better chance at winning. Right now he will lose her the election because the right and the MSM have made it all about race and put it back on the Clinton's. I am hoping it is all about Obama because I do think the independents will go his way, there are too many tired of McCain and Clinton and it is time for a new beginning, Obama just might be able to deliver that.

haha, yah im so sure race wasnt a factor in SC. 80% of blacks voting for the black candidate says it all. and in a state where over half of the voters are black it isnt much of a surprise that obama (the black candidate) won in a landslide.

Alright, can someone please actually illustrate an instance where Bill and or Hillary actually used the race card regarding Obama. I'm not talking about fairy tale, reagan lover or young man. Something they actually said or did that was negative as far as race is concerned. Before you Koolaid drinkers come out of the woodwork, I support Barack Obama. I just dont see what everyone thinks they see. All I hear is the MSM screaming at the top of their lungs about race baiting and then everyone else taking that and running with it.
