The Boston Globe reports:

Senator Edward M. Kennedy will endorse Barack Obama for president tomorrow, breaking his year-long neutrality to send a powerful signal of where the legendary Massachusetts Democrat sees the party going -- and who he thinks is best to lead it.

Kennedy confidantes told the Globe today that the Bay State's senior senator will appear with Obama and Kennedy's niece, Caroline Kennedy, at a morning rally at American University in Washington tomorrow to announce his support.

That will be a potentially significant boost for Obama as he heads into a series of critical primaries on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Kennedy believes Obama can ``transcend race'' and bring unity to the country, a Kennedy associate told the Globe. Kennedy was also impressed by Obama's deep involvement last year in the bipartisan effort to craft legislation on immigration reform, a politically touchy subject the other presidential candidates avoided, the associate said.

The coveted endorsement is a huge blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is both a senatorial colleague and a friend of the Kennedy family. In a campaign where Clinton has trumpeted her experience over Obama's call for hope and change, the endorsement by one of the most experienced and respected Democrats in the Senate is a particularly dramatic coup for Obama.

The scoop was first reported by Time's Mark Halperin and confirmed by CNN. Suzanne Malveaux reported:

"This is really big and very big for Barack Obama. Senator Ted kennedy...is a giant in the party. A Clinton campaign source told me the Clinton campaign is in fact expecting it. Already a senior aide from the Clinton campaign reacting on the record to the news that they expect. 'They have been friends,' Senator Clinton and Kennedy, 'for a long time and Senator Clinton has a lot of respect for Senator Kennedy.' ... This is really kind of extraordinary when you think about the relationship between the Clintons and the Kennedys, the kind of personal relationship that the two have. Obviously this is a very big win for Barack Obama."

Kennedy is one of two potential superstar Dem endorsements -- the other being Al Gore. Read Halperin's report here. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, endorsed Obama in a Sunday New York Times op-ed titled "A President Like My Father."

Ben Smith reported earlier this week that the Clintons were concerned about Kennedy's endorsement and were making a full-court press:

I do know, however, that Hillaryland is worried: Two sources say she's directed a flood of calls the senator's way, with everyone from union leaders to his Massachusetts constituents scrambling to stop what Clinton's camp is worried could be an endorsement of Obama.

Well, Sen. Kennedy apparently called the Clintons to voice his concern about the tone of their campaign, asking them to tone it down, and they didn't. So I don't know why they should be all that surprised--what did they expect? And I support Hillary! But I wrote their campaign to say I didn't like the tone either.

BTW, if that's a recent picture of Sen Kennedy on HuffPO, he looks great--maybe lost some weight? Way to go Sen. Kennedy!

Interesting, this thread has become an echo chamber.

I hope all goes well for all of your hopes and dreams.

I'll be there voting for the Democratic nominee in November, I hope the rest of you will as well.

Night.

Why are Hillary's Senate colleagues, like Ted Kennedy and Tom Daschle, turning on her? Maybe they just aren't as impressed with her as she'd like us to think.

It makes it a lot easier for Democrats to "turn against the party" when the party establishment is turning against the Clintons as well.

The Clintons represent the 1990s, the corporatist wing of the Democratic Party, triangulation and political expediency.

The Kennedy clan is imperfect, but they have always been the heart and soul of the Democratic Party's ideals.

This change we are seeing is not just a passing of the torch forward to youth and the future, but also back to legitimacy and idealism.

As a dis-enfranchised former Republican for the last 33 years. I would like to share why I am switching parties. I am tired of the RNC being hijacked by the religous "wrong". No compassion for people of limited means and just plain mean spirited behavior to any alternative belief or lifestyle. I am very excited. I firmly hope that Obama earns the nomination. He has been a truly exciting candidate to watch. I know of many Republicans that are absolutely frustrated with their party and are looking for a dramatic change. Every one them that I have spoken with who voted Republican the last 2 general elections are willing to cross over to vote for Obama, yet their absolute acrimony towards the Clintons willcasue them come out to vote against her.
I do believe that there are many Republicans that feel as I do. I have listened to several of Obama's speeches and his messages of hope are compelling. This gentlemen I believe has more than a few Republicans "drinking his kool-aid". I know that I am. I do not support Hillary due to the disingenuious tone that seems to come across. I actually did cross over for Bill Clinton both times, but was disappointed in his 2nd term. I want change and I don't want some of the same old same old.
I am actually excited to vote as Democrat for the first time for a candidate that has been refreshing for the nation to hear.

After reading all these anti-Obama comments, it is clear that the Clinton supporters are reading the handwriting on the wall and it doesn't look good for Hillary. They read like road kill if road kill could post on Huffpo. It's all over now baby blue.

This is wonderful news.
I love Ted Kennedy and I love Barack Obama.
I voted for Jack Kennedy, my first time to vote. Caroline is for Obama too and thinks he is like her Dad. That is true, people felt that way about Jack then like poeple think of Obama now. Jack and Jackie were a charming couple then as Barack and Michelle will be now.

It's apparent to me that, emulating their idol, there is no sacred cow of the Democratic Party that the Clinton-Cult members won't happily sacrifice in the furtherance of their idol's ludicrous ambitions. Whether it's the Kennedy family members who have the temerity of not attacking their idol, but merely supporting someone else, or whether it's anyone with the temerity of noticing the Rovian character (or more accurately Rovian lack of character) of the Clinton campaign or the blow-hard self absorbed blatherings of ridiculously self-centered and pathetically lying Bill Clinton, no one is safe from their murderous rage, should one refuse to march in goose-step to their idol's tune.

That those people call themselves Democrats is a source of eternal shame for the Party.

This sounds presidential.

Yahoo! news.

``He is going to continue to be with me and support me and speak out for me,'' Clinton said the day after Senator Barack Obama beat her in South Carolina's Democratic primary by a margin of more than 2-to-1. ``I'm really glad that he's there with me, and I think everybody just needs to take a deep breath,'' she said.

In SC, Obama got 27% of the white male votes, compared to Hillary's 29%. Not much difference. That's in a DEEP SOUTH state. Those who know history, will understand. Plus, that's with Obama competing against TWO white candidates -- one of whom was the states Favorite Son (Edwards)

"Hillary did among white women, winning 44% of their votes. However, just 17% of African-American women supported the former First Lady. Clinton also won among senior citizens leading Obama 40% to 32%. Obama picked up a majority of all voters under 65 and defeated Clinton by a more than two-to-one margin. Obama won among all income, ideological, and education groups."--Rasmussen

While Ted is, in my view, unfit for the presidency, he is more fit for it than George W. Bush is. Ted Kennedy by his negligence and lack of integrity contributed to the death of a young women. GW Bush, however, deliberately and with malice aforethought, is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq.

While I wouldn't want Ted to be president, as a senator he has done a lot of good. He is a good example of why the philosophy "lock someone up and throw away the key" is bankrupt. A person can be redeemed, can learn from his previous misdeeds, and become a better person who can contribute to society.

I don't agree with Ted on all issues, either. Notably, I consider life to be sacred from the moment of conception.

I will support the Democratic nominee. I believe the best ticket for the party and the country would be Clinton-Obama. Even if Obama won the nomination does he really believe that the Rethuglicans are going to place nice? Does he really believe they are sick of the partisanship? If he really believes that his own rhetorical flourishes, mighty as they are, can wrestle power and money away from the right wing of this country, it shows me that at this point in his life he remains hopelessly romantic. Senator Obama is a bit thin skinned and seems caught up in his own legend. If he is the nominee Democrats will kick themselves and squeal when he unravels under the Republican onslaught. Democrats, listen-up, Hillary, and yes Bill, will fight with their last breath. Obama will go down to defeat wishing the world was a fairer, more decent place. Who's going to help him fight the righties? John Swiftboated Kerry.

Unfortunately, the country has become so polarized from Bush's tenure that I find it almost impossible to believe someone as liberal as Obama has any legit shot against John McCain (if indeed, as it looks, he's their nominee). To win elections in this day and age of "our way or the highway" politics, it's independents and moderates who run the show. The fringe right and left might shout the loudest and write the most biting satire, but their voices are easily drowned out by folks who have neither the time nor interest in cracking bread at HuffPo, Politico, Slate or any other site devoted to politics. THESE people are the deciders...not US.
Clinton is close enough to the center (especially so with her stance on military force and defense issues) that she DOES appeal more to the "average" American who doesn't view the use of military force with quite the same negativity as the far left. This explains, in no small part, why Clinton polls higher than Obama when matched head to head with McCain.
Another observation...there is a transparency to the media's coverage of this race and it's nauseating to watch transpire. From their perspective, ratings would skyrocket if Obama wins the nomination and after suffering through last night's pundits on MSNBC, Fox and CNN literally high-fivin' each other with giddy delight, one would have thought the wicked witch of the east had just been vanquished moments before Obama clicked his heels to return all that is pure and decent about politics safely home to Auntie Em.
As horribly unromantic as it sounds, it will be yet another painful lesson for my fellow Dems in November if they vote with their hearts and not their heads.
Voters are free to let inspirational speeches create political motion but not all motion is progress. Afterall, a rocking horse goes nowhere. That analogy explains why despite messages of change and "yes we can," Democrats ought need to be reminded that the goal of this entire process is to WIN.

Ted Kennedy should have been put in prison soo many times in his life it is digusting to see this SOB still voted in by Massachusetts Citizens for all this time. He has done nothing to stop Bush unless it has benn around election time for some Democrat that they want to keep or get elected. Harvard or Yale graduate Elitists or Fascsist Supremists are the only choices the Political Ruling Class want in Washington. Obama is a shill, the same as Hillary. And even though most of the Senators know Hillary is just the same as they are and like her because she is one of them and No Threat to the status quo, they still don't want the BS and the all the trash that Slick Willy brings into the White House and Washington. Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie..and Hello to a New Puppet "Great Communicator" and Uniter, but keep your hands on your wallet, and beware the Draft all you inspired young voters and Ask not What your country can do for you, anymore...cause the government is gearing up to tell you from now on.
