The Boston Globe reports:

Senator Edward M. Kennedy will endorse Barack Obama for president tomorrow, breaking his year-long neutrality to send a powerful signal of where the legendary Massachusetts Democrat sees the party going -- and who he thinks is best to lead it.

Kennedy confidantes told the Globe today that the Bay State's senior senator will appear with Obama and Kennedy's niece, Caroline Kennedy, at a morning rally at American University in Washington tomorrow to announce his support.

That will be a potentially significant boost for Obama as he heads into a series of critical primaries on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Kennedy believes Obama can ``transcend race'' and bring unity to the country, a Kennedy associate told the Globe. Kennedy was also impressed by Obama's deep involvement last year in the bipartisan effort to craft legislation on immigration reform, a politically touchy subject the other presidential candidates avoided, the associate said.

The coveted endorsement is a huge blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is both a senatorial colleague and a friend of the Kennedy family. In a campaign where Clinton has trumpeted her experience over Obama's call for hope and change, the endorsement by one of the most experienced and respected Democrats in the Senate is a particularly dramatic coup for Obama.

The scoop was first reported by Time's Mark Halperin and confirmed by CNN. Suzanne Malveaux reported:

"This is really big and very big for Barack Obama. Senator Ted kennedy...is a giant in the party. A Clinton campaign source told me the Clinton campaign is in fact expecting it. Already a senior aide from the Clinton campaign reacting on the record to the news that they expect. 'They have been friends,' Senator Clinton and Kennedy, 'for a long time and Senator Clinton has a lot of respect for Senator Kennedy.' ... This is really kind of extraordinary when you think about the relationship between the Clintons and the Kennedys, the kind of personal relationship that the two have. Obviously this is a very big win for Barack Obama."

Kennedy is one of two potential superstar Dem endorsements -- the other being Al Gore. Read Halperin's report here. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, endorsed Obama in a Sunday New York Times op-ed titled "A President Like My Father."

Ben Smith reported earlier this week that the Clintons were concerned about Kennedy's endorsement and were making a full-court press:

I do know, however, that Hillaryland is worried: Two sources say she's directed a flood of calls the senator's way, with everyone from union leaders to his Massachusetts constituents scrambling to stop what Clinton's camp is worried could be an endorsement of Obama.

Statement from Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
by andrewalker08, Sun Jan 27, 2008 at 05:12:47 PM EST

"I respect Caroline and Teddy's decision but I have made a different choice. While I admire Senator Obama greatly, I have known Hillary Clinton for over 25 years and have seen first hand how she gets results. As a woman, leader, and person of deep convictions, I believe Hillary Clinton would make the best possible choice for president. She shares so many of the concerns of my father. Hillary has spent a lifetime speaking out on behalf of the powerless and working to alleviate poverty, in our country and around the world. I have seen her work up close and know she will be a great President. At this moment when so much is at stake at home and overseas, I urge our fellow Americans to support Hillary Clinton. That is why my brother Bobby, my sister Kerry, and I are supporting Hillary Clinton."

Still waiting to hear the details on Obamas.
Educate your self.
I don’t mind being inspired, but when you don’t live with your parents anymore and you are on your own, healthy detailed plan on specific issue actually becomes important

With Ted Kennedy and Tom Hayden in the bag we can go as far left as we have since...since...probably before FDR.

The difference between Kathleen's Kennedy Townsends endorsement and Caroline's is this: Caroline has spent her life trying to stay away from the public eye and politics. For her to come out and endorse anyone speaks volumes to how strongly she must feel about Obama. Kathleen's endorsement, being a former politician herself, feels more like politics as usual.

On Ted, I say thank goodness he took a stand and he did so BEFORE Super Duper Tuesday. I'm tired of everyone saying the old guard in the DNC can't tell us who they are supporting until after the party has made its decision. That is crazy, if they are supposed to the lead the DNC then lead it now when so many are looking for guidance, not after the freaking fact.

Thank you Ted for standing up and doing what leaders do!

I'm not convinced an endorsement from Ted Kennedy is a plus.
"Liberal Lion" translates to two four-letter words for many Americans... on both sides of the aisle.

With all the scandal in Kennedy's life (despite his lifetime of Senate work), being lumped with him could turn out to be Not so advantageous.
Obama doesn't need Ted in his corner.

Once you get past all the racist posters who show up on every Obama story and all the GOPuke Kennedy-bashers who ooze out of cyberspace like pus from a boil every time a post or story on a Kennedy goes up, you can logically analyze this endorsement and see that there's something really interesting happening in the Democratic Party here.

Which leads to this question: Is this the death struggle of the DLC?

Hillary was their last big hope and now she's in a fight. Many heavy hitters in Congress are starting to go to her opponent and, lo and behold, NONE of them are DLC members. Could it be that the Dems are FINALLY getting it that being GOPuke Lite doesn't win elections? Could it be that Hillary herself is getting it because she sure doesn't sound like a DLC'er on the campaign trail anymore?

Obama specifically rejected the DLC when they courted him. Dr. Dean's elevation to DNC Chairman was seen by many as a repudiation of DLC'er Terry McAuliffe.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not writing off Hillary. She's still very formidable. And even Edwards is accruing enough delegates to make the convention interesting. All I'm saying is that WHOEVER wins this thing is going to have a very different Democratic Party to deal with.

And that's a good thing. Ah, the DLC...We knew them well..NOT!

Read this to see the disastrous results of Bill Clinton's economic policies and then figure out why white men did not vote for Hillary in SC.

The Clintons aren't getting endorsements from people who have known them a long time for one reason: nobody likes them! These people have worked with the Clintons and know what complete snakes they are and how they're willing to ruin the Democratic party for their own lust for power.

The Clintons are looking like very bad losers... So are many of their supporters. I am not suggesting that the Clintons are "losers" or have lost the election... Just that this getting sad.
Attacking all around, even undecideds are getting chewed up. The endorsement is apparently valued by the Clintons, so make sure to curse the Kennedy's, Team Clinton.

Tomorrow the Senate battle over the FISA bill continues.....

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/012708Y.shtml

Harry Reid will try again to give Bush what he wants, more power to spy on us and immunity for Telcoms. Harry does this with the approval and assistance of the Democratic party leadership.

Obama is avoiding this issue like the plague. Why?

Obama should lead on this issue in the Senate.

Show us your Presidential stuff Barack, and lead the Democrats to deliver the 60 votes to kill immunity in the FISA bill.

Or, don't even bother to show up (just like the Mukasey confirmation for AG vote) and allow Bush to expand his spying powers, selling out the American people.

Change and hope, Senator Obama?

How about showing up in the Senate to vote to protect the American people on FISA?

Somebody below contended that Obama's health care plan is better because you don't face penalties for not being covered. Give me a break. You face penalties when you don't send you children to school as well and that is because there are certain things in society that SHOULD be mandated and education for children and health care are two of those things. Many, many people will fall through the cracks with an opt in or out systems controlled by the insurance companies. Ask any public social worker how tragic it is. How many disenfranchised people - drugs addicts, the mentally ill, people that are irresponsible, etc., won't take the action to cover themselves. It is not only a tragedy for those individuals, but then too for the society that allows people to fall through the cracks this way. I can't believe people don't get the urgency of this problem. We are the only industrialized country that does not provide unniversal health care for its citizens. Obama's plan is not what we need. We need to fight for this moral provision for all of our citizens, nothing less. By the way, the same mentality is what is behind the arguement for not mandating social security - why should people have to be forced into the government retirement system is the question, and the answer is that it is for the protection and good of all citizens to be forced to have a basic protection in a time of life where they will no longer be able to provide for an income. I think this is a huge error in philosophy on his part and much more in line with the Republican philosophy.
