The Boston Globe reports:

Senator Edward M. Kennedy will endorse Barack Obama for president tomorrow, breaking his year-long neutrality to send a powerful signal of where the legendary Massachusetts Democrat sees the party going -- and who he thinks is best to lead it.

Kennedy confidantes told the Globe today that the Bay State's senior senator will appear with Obama and Kennedy's niece, Caroline Kennedy, at a morning rally at American University in Washington tomorrow to announce his support.

That will be a potentially significant boost for Obama as he heads into a series of critical primaries on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Kennedy believes Obama can ``transcend race'' and bring unity to the country, a Kennedy associate told the Globe. Kennedy was also impressed by Obama's deep involvement last year in the bipartisan effort to craft legislation on immigration reform, a politically touchy subject the other presidential candidates avoided, the associate said.

The coveted endorsement is a huge blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is both a senatorial colleague and a friend of the Kennedy family. In a campaign where Clinton has trumpeted her experience over Obama's call for hope and change, the endorsement by one of the most experienced and respected Democrats in the Senate is a particularly dramatic coup for Obama.

The scoop was first reported by Time's Mark Halperin and confirmed by CNN. Suzanne Malveaux reported:

"This is really big and very big for Barack Obama. Senator Ted kennedy...is a giant in the party. A Clinton campaign source told me the Clinton campaign is in fact expecting it. Already a senior aide from the Clinton campaign reacting on the record to the news that they expect. 'They have been friends,' Senator Clinton and Kennedy, 'for a long time and Senator Clinton has a lot of respect for Senator Kennedy.' ... This is really kind of extraordinary when you think about the relationship between the Clintons and the Kennedys, the kind of personal relationship that the two have. Obviously this is a very big win for Barack Obama."

Kennedy is one of two potential superstar Dem endorsements -- the other being Al Gore. Read Halperin's report here. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, endorsed Obama in a Sunday New York Times op-ed titled "A President Like My Father."

Ben Smith reported earlier this week that the Clintons were concerned about Kennedy's endorsement and were making a full-court press:

I do know, however, that Hillaryland is worried: Two sources say she's directed a flood of calls the senator's way, with everyone from union leaders to his Massachusetts constituents scrambling to stop what Clinton's camp is worried could be an endorsement of Obama.

There ya go Barack, alternative energy on 2 legs. Just put Teddy's podium and 3 years' worth of old speeches right in front of that windmill, of course you have to factor in the CO2 emissions, maybe some sort of cap-and-trade, there...

Ted Kennedy may be able to move a few votes in Massachusetts, but that's about it. Hillary WILL ultimately win the nomination. What is disheartening however is the utter treachery of this endorsement. The Clintons have been nothing but accommodating and deferential to the Ted Kennedy and his clan. They even claim to be "friends". As Harry Truman once said, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog".

Ted Kennedy's endorsement means nothing. He's getting long in the tooth and really isn't much of a political force anymore. He doesn't have any business savvy, panders to unions and elitists, not the middle income earners.
I still thinks the next prez will be a one termer, no matter who it is!

Recipe for securing another Republican disaster presidency:

ADD:
2 Democratic senators popular in their own right, each bringing unique and strong capabilites, but lest we forget, neither a black or a woman have been elected president in this country--

MIX:
A 3rd senator whom is an electable, qualified, intelligent albeit safe, white male that ran on a previous national ticket.. that in any other election would probably have been annointed the party's candidate by default

SEPERATE:
A five person, all white male group that represent nothing but that last 8 years of incompetence and boobdom that will probably in the end put up an experienced in foriegn policy, grandfatherly, decorated POW veteran..

COMBINE:
all ingredients above and add a bit of national hopelesness from the train wreck of the last 8 years.. and you are left with a dynamic, idealistic, young black male candidate running against the wise, experienced, safe,WHITE male candidate.

What do you think the result will be?

The country will not elect a woman or a black man, so stop wasting your time.

Obama is on his way to slaying TWO giants ... Hillary and Bill.

Watch out this fall, Republicans. ...

So, where do we go from here? What happens when we seriously consider the illusion of a movie star’s personality to be a legitimate qualification for public office? What happens when public relations finally and completely replace politics? Will we as a society have finally and officially lost our minds?

Great News ~

He, more than anyone knows how important it is to have a leader with vision and can engage "we the people" ~ for too long that has been missing in our leaders.

Now, lets hope Gore and Carter have something similar to say.

Okay. Teddy's an asshole and everything, but this is a significant endorsement. I really wouldn't want to be in any room with Hillary and an ashtray if she doesn't get this nomination.

You know, it's appearing as though the elected Democratics may never really have liked the Clintons very much. Certainly they don't seem to welcome the notion of having Bill and Hill haunting Capitol Hill together again.

As for the campaign, we can agree that Matthews is a jerk but he said something spot on last week.

He said the Clinton's approach to politics is to win first and worry about repairing damaged relationships [e.g. African Americans] later.

This will signal the party elite to migrate to Obama. The only remaining big endorsements are from Carter and Gore. Can you imagine Gore endorsing HRC? No way.

"It’s not so much that women aren’t ready for a woman president. We are. But there’s something about last week’s spectacle of Bill Clinton crashing through South Carolina like the guy poised to drag her back to his cave by the hair that reminds us that Hillary has some stuff to work out in her marriage before she works it out with the rest of us. Any woman in public life inevitably still struggles to define herself in opposition to men. But Hillary has an even bigger cross to bear: She’s still defining herself in opposition to Bill."
