The Boston Globe reports:

Senator Edward M. Kennedy will endorse Barack Obama for president tomorrow, breaking his year-long neutrality to send a powerful signal of where the legendary Massachusetts Democrat sees the party going -- and who he thinks is best to lead it.

Kennedy confidantes told the Globe today that the Bay State's senior senator will appear with Obama and Kennedy's niece, Caroline Kennedy, at a morning rally at American University in Washington tomorrow to announce his support.

That will be a potentially significant boost for Obama as he heads into a series of critical primaries on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Kennedy believes Obama can ``transcend race'' and bring unity to the country, a Kennedy associate told the Globe. Kennedy was also impressed by Obama's deep involvement last year in the bipartisan effort to craft legislation on immigration reform, a politically touchy subject the other presidential candidates avoided, the associate said.

The coveted endorsement is a huge blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is both a senatorial colleague and a friend of the Kennedy family. In a campaign where Clinton has trumpeted her experience over Obama's call for hope and change, the endorsement by one of the most experienced and respected Democrats in the Senate is a particularly dramatic coup for Obama.

The scoop was first reported by Time's Mark Halperin and confirmed by CNN. Suzanne Malveaux reported:

"This is really big and very big for Barack Obama. Senator Ted kennedy...is a giant in the party. A Clinton campaign source told me the Clinton campaign is in fact expecting it. Already a senior aide from the Clinton campaign reacting on the record to the news that they expect. 'They have been friends,' Senator Clinton and Kennedy, 'for a long time and Senator Clinton has a lot of respect for Senator Kennedy.' ... This is really kind of extraordinary when you think about the relationship between the Clintons and the Kennedys, the kind of personal relationship that the two have. Obviously this is a very big win for Barack Obama."

Kennedy is one of two potential superstar Dem endorsements -- the other being Al Gore. Read Halperin's report here. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, endorsed Obama in a Sunday New York Times op-ed titled "A President Like My Father."

Ben Smith reported earlier this week that the Clintons were concerned about Kennedy's endorsement and were making a full-court press:

I do know, however, that Hillaryland is worried: Two sources say she's directed a flood of calls the senator's way, with everyone from union leaders to his Massachusetts constituents scrambling to stop what Clinton's camp is worried could be an endorsement of Obama.

I think Caroline kennedy endorsement came from the heart. But I beleive Ted Kennedy endorsement comes from the head. I think he remember the remark that Obama made,"I can get her people if I am the democratic nominee, but can she get my people if she is the democratic nominee". I think that was a warning shot at the liberal establishment. This is why a lot of big wigs in the democratic party call the Clintons to cool the criticism of Obama. When Clintons fell to do so. They had to give the Obama people something.Obama is bring more people into the party and expanding its base. This was a smart move for Ted Kennedy. If Obama fell to win the nomination he could still help the nominee win in november. If Obama do win the presidency. Ted would have and inside track with the Obama Presidency.

I'm voting for Hill. That "yes we can" nonsense may fly with the hardcore liberal elites, but D.C. is the real world, and I haven't seen anything out of Obama yet in the real world. I'm sorry, but I want someone to go to the mat with the republicans. Obama doesn't have the base and experience to make that happen. Love or hate them, the Clintons have done a lot of good for the democrats, and will continue to do so.

Thank you, Senator. This is an important contribution to the legacy of your brothers and worthy of them for those of us who remember and loved them. Thank you to your niece as well. Your family has contributed so much to our Nation. We remember…and we will remember this. Thank you for helping us to turn the page.

My fellow Obama supporters.

This is no time to gloat. This gift is not the goal we seek, its fuel for the fire that burns in our hearts.

We march at dawn.

Into the streets of doubt and despair. Onto the lawns of our neighbor's homes. Up to the heights we go calling.

We are ready.

We have been released; to doubt no more the direction of our course; the urgency of our purpose; the value of love; or the possiblilty of change.

I cant wait to hear the Obama campaign explain how the Kennedy endorsement is another break with the past. If there are any Clinton political advisors with two cents for a brain (and that's debatable) they could turn this edorsement around to their own advantage and ask who is really breaking with the past.

This is the endorsement that will come to haunt Obama.

Ted Kennedy plays well in Massachusetts and within uber-liberal Democratic circles, but he's toxic to moderates.

Obama cannot win a national election without cross-over and independent voters. Being tied to Ted Kennedy may become Obama's albatross.

If Obama wins the nomination, that smiling picture of Ted Kennedy with Obama and whatever Kennedy says about him will be in a political ad. Just wait.

I love Ted Kennedy as a Senator but I'm voting for Hillary!

This is not American idol!!!
Every time Obama wins the media acts like we just received god’s gift to America.
Where were Oprah and everybody 4 years ago when we really needed the change?
whenever Hillary wins the media kind of rolls there eyes and Obama starts complaining that she stole his votes and threatens to sue.
Now days every news networks sound like Obama commercials and Clinton attack ads?
Why is it so easy to criticize a woman, but god forbid you try to do that with a black man? You’ll be immediately labeled as a Racist.
IT’S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO educate him or herself, look at the issues and stop the madness.
I don’t mind being inspired, but when you don’t leave with your parents anymore and you are on your own healthy detailed plan on specific issue actually becomes important.

For all of you that say that the Clinton's or the Kennedy's negatives will energize the Republican base, I have one question. Why do you let the right wing echo chamber frame the question on electability? In a recent LAT-Bloomberg poll in a matchup between Clinton v McCain, Clinton wins by 4 points whereas Obama loses by 1 point. If you look closely at the internal numbers, Clinton strips more Republicans off than Obama does.

We should vote for the candidate who we feel represents our views. I think the country is really more progressive than conservative, and I think that most liberals and progressives feel that any Democratic candidate is better than any Republican candidate. We need to put aside our partisanship to win in November.

Many years ago I did an internship in a program that provided services to Mexican-American immigrants, mostly agricultural workers, terribly poor. Their homes were usually tiny, maybe 1 bedroom, and all the kids slept together in the livingroom. The kids carried a tortilla with beans and rice for lunch every day. Very very poor people.

Yet in every home there was an immaculately-maintained alter in the living room, draped with some kind of nice pretty cloth or scarf, with some candles on it, a crucifix nailed onto the wall. Sometimes there were also small figurines of Mary, some of the saints. And a photograph of JFK. On the alter. By Jesus and Mary and the Saints. In every single home.

JFK is probably the most loved American politician ever among Mexican-Americans. And Bill Clinton may think he's the first black and Mexican-American politician, but I don't think Bill Clinton can stand up to JFK.

I've heard people suggest Bill Clinton's photo should be up on the post office wall. But I've never heard of anyone putting Bill Clinton's photograph on a religious alter right next to Mary and Jesus. There's no room for Clinton, because that's where JFK's picture goes.

“And therefore education at the University mostly worked by the age-old method of putting a lot of young people in the vicinity of a lot of books and hoping that something would pass from one to the other, while the actual young people put themselves in the vicinity of inns and taverns for exactly the same reason.”

Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Obama will not be passive... he will actively campaign.

I believe that Ted seriously wants Obama in the White House, for political, civic and sentimental reasons.

Sentiment aside, though, Kennedy would not do this if he were not convinced that he could make enough difference to help Obama win, in the Summer and in November.

He did not come to that conviction lightly.

Some of the hardest-headed, coldest-eyed politicians in the business have helped him conclude that Obama not only can win, but WILL win with the right help.

Both Obama and Kennedy have earned this... Obama's first hurrah... Kennedy's last one.

What a story.
