Update: Check out the pic-by-pic replay here.

Update: Obama explained today his alleged snub of fellow candidate Hillary Clinton, saying he was "surprised" to hear about the coverage this morning:

"I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton]... And senator Clinton and I have had very cordial relations on the floor and off the floor; I waved at her as we were coming into the Senate chamber before we walked over. I think there's a lot more tea leaf reading going on here than I think people are suggesting."

However, this explanation seemed to contradict another statement offered by senior Obama adviser David Axelrod:

AXELROD: this was obviously an awkward day from that standpoint, and I don't think he wanted to stand there while Senator Kennedy was greeting Senator Clinton and I think that was an appropriate sentiment. Unfortunately, the camera caught it in a different way, and so it got interpreted that way and that's the kind of environment we're in right now. It's a very competitive race, so every little thing is going to be interpreted in that way- but it was really, I think, a matter of letting Senator Kennedy have his own conversation, his own greeting with Senator Clinton without him hovering over them.
BRZEZINSKI: I, I guess. I mean, I guess the Clinton campaign may see it as a snub. We've been getting a few e-mails and-

SCARBOROUGH: you're right. and then it was also interesting afterwards, David --

AXELROD: -in this environment, every single thing can be inflated and interpreted and will in a political -- in a hyperpolitical light. But- it is what I suggested. I think it's understandable that he would not want to stand there with Senator Kennedy as if he were-- lording it over her. I, I, I you know, I understand that instinct.

WASHINGTON — So close, yet so far away _ and so bitter.

Rival Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama came within a foot of each other just before President Bush's State of the Union speech Monday night and managed not to acknowledge each other, and certainly not touch.

Clinton, clad in scarlet, crossed the aisle between their seats on the House floor. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democratic icon who had endorsed Obama earlier in the day over Clinton, reached out his hand when she came close.

She took it; they shook. Meanwhile, Obama, dressed in a dark suit, had turned away.

The rivals then retreated to their seats, only the aisle and four senators between them.

It was the latest chapter in the increasingly nasty fight between the two leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination and capped a dramatic day.

Hours earlier, Obama received the endorsements of Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy, the brother and daughter, respectively, of President John F. Kennedy. They were joined by Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., the senator's son.

The only Republican senator still running, John McCain of Arizona, skipped the address to campaign in Florida.

(This version CORRECTS the sequence of handshake.)

Thank you for showing those pictures, as they deserve to be shown, together. Those pictures give the lie to those who are trying to create a controversy, where none exist.
Senator Barack Obama is a complete gentleman; take a look at his beautiful wife; and how he behaves himself; and how has behaved himself all along; he will truly restore honor and dignity to the White House. The pictures demonstrate, that when that libelous picture is shown by itself, it would seem as though Obama, was just turning; but the pictures, as a whole composite, show what was really happening. There was no intentional snub; though she deserved it by their behavior, she, her husband, and her surrogates, in the last month.
It is no wonder that Iowa deserves to be the first state, in the nation, holding caucuses. There the candidates must get up-close and personal. Iowans got to know Senator Barack Obama, and they passed judgment on him, and it was good.
Stop trying to get milk from a stone. Nothing happened that night. It is over.

Yes, we can! Yes, we will!

Enough said.

Obama is consistently ungracious when around Clinton. He was snide when he failed to look at her in that debate when asked about likeability. He seems to play the role of the victim in this campaign yet more often than not if you really look, he baits the Clintons.
I have to say the free pass he has been given is unfair. He never really answers difficult questions, never clarifies the hows in an agenda, and speaks only in themes and motivation. Im sorry but until he comes cleam he leaves me cold. I find it disingenous to always hear motivational speeches when I need to learn about the candidate and where he is going and how! Until the man starts answering tough questions, and even explains the hypocrisies Im not amused. Clearly Hillary was attacked by the media in debates and never Obama. Clearly that last debate Obama attacked Hillary with the Walmart smear. Her response was fair, she mentioned his own indiscretions. To which Mr Obama was not answering honestly. It was not 5 hours legal work for a church group. He had a long standing relationship with Resko. And the church group well honored Louis Farrakan.

I've been looking for somewhere to vent on this issue, and here's as good a place as any...

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AT MSNBC?! Theyre leading the charge in trumping up this "big story" out of this single ambiguous very, very plausibly misleading snapshot of a single instant. A reasonable person would give Obama - or anyone in this situation - the benefit of the doubt. he says he didn't mean it as a snub; this one photo alone isnt enough to prove he's lying. Should be the end of the story. But not on MSNBC. Theyre focused on it like a laser and the discussion is all one-sided.

This is just the latest example of this network promoting, if not creating, a pro-Clinton narrative and giving virtually no serious airtime or attention to the Obama side of the story. The idiotic and totally slanted half hour story on this bs issue I just saw on tonight's Hardball was better than a half hour commercial for Clinton because it was claoked in the aura of neutrality.

I wish Chris Matthews and the rest of MSNBC (except maybe KO) would do the honorable thing and just ANNOUNCE THEIR ENDORSEMENT like print media outlets do. Instead, Clinton gets something much more valuable - and deeply unethical - a backdoor endorsement that is really more like a giant campign contribution in-kind. Disgraceful.

This might have been a non-issue magnified by the press. However Clinton's reply is just another example of her twisting the truth and jabbing Obama every chance she gets.

As to Axelrod's generic comment, I have a surprise for you guys. Operatives make generic excuses for their bosses ALL the time, especially for minor issues that dont deserve the time or energy of a detailed investigation or response. It's like telling a loquacious child that babies are brought by storks, just so they will shut up and stop playing 100 questions.

Here are the facts from people who were there- 1.A rep in Ted Kennedy's office said Kennedy reached around Obama to shake Clinton's hand. KENNEDY offered his hand. She did not offer her hand to either Kennedy or Obama.
2. Senator Claire McCaskill said SHE tapped Obama on the shoulder and asked him a question. He turned around to respond to her. McCaskill says she was not aware of any supposed snub until she saw it in the press.

Now, I guess the Clinton's could spin this as a great conspiracy, with Obama, Kennedy and McCaskill all lying. But it's really a non-story and Clinton is playing wounded victim AGAIN, and critisizing Obama although she knows she is lying!

The hate against Hillary is breathtaking. What has she done to you people? She has been in public life for years, she has been humiliated over and over again. She did nothing you really could use against her. Lies and innuendos you could not proof. The name calling alone, not done to any other candidate, is something else. What if your wife or daughter or sister would be called such vulgar names?

What a woman, she is still standing up, frankly, I admire her personal strength.

The Bush Administration has been actually turned dow a new form of torture. Detainees would have had Obama supporter posts read aloud to them 24/7, but test runs indicated they mistakenly believed it was a Taliban primer on the correct treatment of women. An interesting side effect was noted in that some of the subjects were actually aroused by hearing such words as "whore","bitch" and "c*nt".

Isn't the calculated " Outrage" campaign a page right out of the Rovian handbook?? Hillary learned real good. I just hope she hasn't learned all the "Wrong" lessons too.

It illustrated a lack of poise by Obama. He was intimidated by Hillary and turned his back towards her, which shows a lack of class and breeding. Maybe he needs to go to finishing school and come back in 8 years.

I can't believe how stupid we are, that one moment of awkwardness is taking up the slightest time.

You know why I find this important? Because it proves ONCE again how unfair and one sided and blinded the Obama people/supporters are. They are so filled with hate towards Hillary they can not even ADMIT that their candidate showed a flaw the other night. They can't admit he is slightly less then perfect. They can't admit he acted like a little child.

This guy who purports to be the uniter, and the candidate of hope and change can act like this.

His actions have been excused because:

1. He was allowing Hillary and Ted a private moment (yea, in a room full over hundreds of people...)

2. He was tapped on the shoulder.

3. He was giving them room.

4. She deserved it.

And now she is being ripped a new one because of her comment on the snub.

Seriously. It is absolutely disgusting. Obama is nothing but a petulant little man, and so are his supporters. We have seen a series of his little tantrums now, and this is the final straw. I was always intending to vote for him should he win the nomination, but serisously, now, I would rather vote a war hero then this spoiled child.

WHAT BS CLINTON! What BS... I really can not take her being in office. He was talking to Pelosi. Ugh. Of course she turned this into some petty BS to make it seam like she intimidates Obama. No more Clintonism.

she is so full of it. She is a derisive divisive shrew. God help us all if she's ever the POTUS. One of the most respected liberal websites has a lot to say about why she is NOT a good choice for president!
