Update: Check out the pic-by-pic replay here.

Update: Obama explained today his alleged snub of fellow candidate Hillary Clinton, saying he was "surprised" to hear about the coverage this morning:

"I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton]... And senator Clinton and I have had very cordial relations on the floor and off the floor; I waved at her as we were coming into the Senate chamber before we walked over. I think there's a lot more tea leaf reading going on here than I think people are suggesting."

However, this explanation seemed to contradict another statement offered by senior Obama adviser David Axelrod:

AXELROD: this was obviously an awkward day from that standpoint, and I don't think he wanted to stand there while Senator Kennedy was greeting Senator Clinton and I think that was an appropriate sentiment. Unfortunately, the camera caught it in a different way, and so it got interpreted that way and that's the kind of environment we're in right now. It's a very competitive race, so every little thing is going to be interpreted in that way- but it was really, I think, a matter of letting Senator Kennedy have his own conversation, his own greeting with Senator Clinton without him hovering over them.
BRZEZINSKI: I, I guess. I mean, I guess the Clinton campaign may see it as a snub. We've been getting a few e-mails and-

SCARBOROUGH: you're right. and then it was also interesting afterwards, David --

AXELROD: -in this environment, every single thing can be inflated and interpreted and will in a political -- in a hyperpolitical light. But- it is what I suggested. I think it's understandable that he would not want to stand there with Senator Kennedy as if he were-- lording it over her. I, I, I you know, I understand that instinct.

WASHINGTON — So close, yet so far away _ and so bitter.

Rival Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama came within a foot of each other just before President Bush's State of the Union speech Monday night and managed not to acknowledge each other, and certainly not touch.

Clinton, clad in scarlet, crossed the aisle between their seats on the House floor. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democratic icon who had endorsed Obama earlier in the day over Clinton, reached out his hand when she came close.

She took it; they shook. Meanwhile, Obama, dressed in a dark suit, had turned away.

The rivals then retreated to their seats, only the aisle and four senators between them.

It was the latest chapter in the increasingly nasty fight between the two leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination and capped a dramatic day.

Hours earlier, Obama received the endorsements of Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy, the brother and daughter, respectively, of President John F. Kennedy. They were joined by Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., the senator's son.

The only Republican senator still running, John McCain of Arizona, skipped the address to campaign in Florida.

(This version CORRECTS the sequence of handshake.)

bottom line?...who cares...this brings nothing constructive to the process...pure Hollywooding...trivial, petty and superficial.

Spoken with the graciousness I would expect from Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Lacking style Obama turned his back. Gee if he can't even be civil to an opponent can we trust him to be civil to leaders from other countries that he disagrees with? Could it be we have a Bush in Dem clothing, reacting out of temper instead of thoughtfulness? Maybe Obama is too young to be pres. Is Claire Obama's Monica?

Where did Hillary Clinton make this comment?
Fox News
Who was she talking to?
Chris Wallace

So here is the presidential hopeful continuing her disingenuous gestures of friendship. to belittle her opponent using the network of Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reiley... but wait didn't Rupert Murdoch give her money?
What a treacherous ambitious fraud.

lol, both the fanatic clinton supports and the fanatic obama supporters are spinning every little bit of truth here. She said, no he said, she voted, no he voted.. or didn't. Snub? So what. Good for him. Good for her to put her hand out. So what. Does this mean our brothers/sisters are coming home? lets all stop lying about things, and stop denouncing the other campaign's supports as idiots. They both have some "strategery" in their actions and plans for the future. Both of them have postured themselves to get to where they are. Don't bash one and praise another because that makes all of you sound foolish. If it's a duck and quacks, it's a duck. a Lame duck, but it's a duck. Both sides here are claiming a holier then thou attitude, and the one who does rise above that will be the best candidate. Of course, it will be interesting who bashes me, and from what party the are from... let's see.

This is exactly what I dislike about the Clintons-triangulation and poll driven.

She was ask what happened at the SOTU and she said her hands are always out to shake his hand and looks forward to shaking his hand.

What she did not say is that she NEVER, NEVER made an attept to shake Obama's hand. Instead of saying he did wave at me when we came in and that there is no hard feelings. She decided to MUDDY the water a little more.

What's up with Maureen? Is she losing it?

This isn't a story. It's just National Enquirer stuff.

And Hillary's response was appropriate. Obama replied that relations were cordial.

Non-event.

Boy the pro-Hillary media must be very desperate to make this an issue over her stance on the war that has killed thousands of our good men and women in uniform. That photo was leaked by her campaign and the media is playing it up for her.

But the funny thing, is it makes her look bad...it makes her less presidential.

Pompous Obama is acting like he has already won now that the Kennedys came to his side.

Good God -- is this really important? The media makes me crazy. They are like a dog with a bone when creating "news" stories. Move on please. It was the same with the racial crap ... the media wouldn't let it go and turned it into a story that wasn't. Either do your job correctly and honorably or go work for People Magazine.

Signed in utter disgust.

of course she showed grace & class by choosing to rise above it rather than trying to play it for political advantage...NOT! This sums her up completely- cold, calculating bitch. I understand now why the republicans hate her guts.

Boy, we've reached the bottom of the barrel in election coverage via Huffington.

4,000 dead Americans, 30,000 wounded Americans, the economy plummeting...and the headlines relate to handshake "snubs" and who's at fault.

Rather depressing.

Ask me if I care a whit about this. Nope
This is the kind of coverage that makes me yawn and tune out. Policies folks, policies.

How this became a snub is beyond me. Just look at the picture. Hillary is obviously looking at Ted Kennedy and reaching to shake HIS hand. Obama looks to be addressing someone behind Ted. If she were looking toward Obama, OK maybe he snubbed her but she's not even interested in him.
