Update: Check out the pic-by-pic replay here.

Update: Obama explained today his alleged snub of fellow candidate Hillary Clinton, saying he was "surprised" to hear about the coverage this morning:

"I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton]... And senator Clinton and I have had very cordial relations on the floor and off the floor; I waved at her as we were coming into the Senate chamber before we walked over. I think there's a lot more tea leaf reading going on here than I think people are suggesting."

However, this explanation seemed to contradict another statement offered by senior Obama adviser David Axelrod:

AXELROD: this was obviously an awkward day from that standpoint, and I don't think he wanted to stand there while Senator Kennedy was greeting Senator Clinton and I think that was an appropriate sentiment. Unfortunately, the camera caught it in a different way, and so it got interpreted that way and that's the kind of environment we're in right now. It's a very competitive race, so every little thing is going to be interpreted in that way- but it was really, I think, a matter of letting Senator Kennedy have his own conversation, his own greeting with Senator Clinton without him hovering over them.
BRZEZINSKI: I, I guess. I mean, I guess the Clinton campaign may see it as a snub. We've been getting a few e-mails and-

SCARBOROUGH: you're right. and then it was also interesting afterwards, David --

AXELROD: -in this environment, every single thing can be inflated and interpreted and will in a political -- in a hyperpolitical light. But- it is what I suggested. I think it's understandable that he would not want to stand there with Senator Kennedy as if he were-- lording it over her. I, I, I you know, I understand that instinct.

WASHINGTON — So close, yet so far away _ and so bitter.

Rival Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama came within a foot of each other just before President Bush's State of the Union speech Monday night and managed not to acknowledge each other, and certainly not touch.

Clinton, clad in scarlet, crossed the aisle between their seats on the House floor. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democratic icon who had endorsed Obama earlier in the day over Clinton, reached out his hand when she came close.

She took it; they shook. Meanwhile, Obama, dressed in a dark suit, had turned away.

The rivals then retreated to their seats, only the aisle and four senators between them.

It was the latest chapter in the increasingly nasty fight between the two leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination and capped a dramatic day.

Hours earlier, Obama received the endorsements of Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy, the brother and daughter, respectively, of President John F. Kennedy. They were joined by Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., the senator's son.

The only Republican senator still running, John McCain of Arizona, skipped the address to campaign in Florida.

(This version CORRECTS the sequence of handshake.)

Nice to see that the Democrats are concerned with the important issues that affect Americans.

How silly?

It's understandable that Obama would turn his back on Hilary. He was anxiously looking for Joe Lieberman so he could give him a hug.

I predicted last night that this non-story would be virtually dead within 24 hours. Looks like I was right. No Dean scream moment for you Clintonistas. Too bad; so sad.

It's so pathetic that so many of you would like for nothing more than an honorable man like Barack Obama to be derailed by such pettiness as a non-snub snub.

I understand your frustration though, since the Clintons, who you support, are such shameless liars, so willing to distort their fellow Democrat's record, and so quick to use the race card and say anything to win.

Of course you want to bring Obama down to your candidate's level. One major problem: Obama's an honorable guy.

Not to worry Hillary- You creamed Obama in Florida: SC in reverse. And I doubt Floridians are going to allow the Democratic Party to disenfranchise their votes in the long run.

Obama isn't very nice- a subtle cold streak underneath that ear-to-ear grin. It's too bad this blog, MSNBC as well as other MSM aren't impartial- I'm tired of Obama suck-ups. The man doesn't have the bone fides to be president-kinda like W.

Check this Picture, another angle seems to back up Obamas who says he was turning to talk to that lady from Missouri

Here is another angle for those of you trying to create hate with Hillary and Obama. I dont doubt they dont like each other but to assume that either would be uncivil in this setting is ludicrous..

Hill extending a hand to Ted has nothing to do with anyone else except Hill and Ted.

She snubbed him -- if anything -- by reaching across him to shake another's hand. Login in your worlds, dictates she would've shook his first, then the next person, if they hadn't already greeted each other earlier in the evening.

All of you screaming snub have lost your Bush-forsaken minds.

For what it is worth, I do not believe
Senator Obama snubbed Hillary Clinton, intentionally. I would take his explanation at face value. He did say that he turned to answer another person's question. These things do happen.
Now let's analyze events, here. In the touchy feely atmosphere of the debate, that the moderators try to create, in a spirit of "We are all Americans here" Mrs. Clinton was asked whether she thought or would say that John Edward, and Barack Obama, were ready to be president.
Steely, Hard Hillary, refused the peace offering and merely stated, in a hard manner that the people must decide whether they are or not. It would have been a simple courtesy to say "yes", it would have taken nothing from her or diminish her in any way; yet that was her answer.
I am human, I have feelings. I am trying to run a clean campaign, on the issues, and my opponent tries to derail my campaign, by talking about what is obvious; but has no bearing on anything substantive, except on prejudiced minds; almost like crying fire in a theater in the powder-keg of race that is our country.
I am trying to present myself, as I am, my person, my being, my ideas, my hopes, and someone tries to besmirch that for their own purposes, by going on the low road.

Full of love, and loving peace as I do, I would still resent, though somehow I would try to put a brave face on it, what was done to me. It is only human to respond like a human being-to wit, "I respect you; but what you did was not only inappropriate; but bordered on evil".
I would understand if Senator Obama, would not have wanted to shake her hand, so recently being denigrated and put down, as was done to him.

Yes, we can! Yes, we will!

Enough said.

Please.
We all know by now that dainty Obama had his lil' feelings hurt by those meanies Bill and Hillary, and now acting like he's 8 and treating Hillary like she's got cooties.
I love it.
Clayton Williams tried that shit on Ann Richards back when they were running against each other in the Texas governor's race and he blew the whole election over it.
Even the biggest Texas redneck knows it's just good manners to shake hands with an adversary--especially a lady, and MOST especially in public.
Obama's thin skin is going to fuck him up in the end. Like Clayton Williams, one day we'll be saying, "Obama Who?"
))chuckling((

He denies everything so why is this a big surprise? He believes that Clinton and Edwards are conspiring against him and if he gets unfavorable coverage, his solution is to shoot the messenger.

While I think Bill Clinton made some over-the-top comments, Obama intentionally chose to vilify the former President. CNN airs Carville and Begala, who are pro-Hillary and his response is to get them banned. Now his surrogates are attacking Univision for their alleged pro-Clinton bias.

He has some Nixonian qualities that are frankly disturbing. It's win at any cost. Not much different than the Clintons except his tactics are clearly alienating many, myself included. Clinton may also be alienated some but let's face facts, either you like her or you hate her. She's already alienated most of those voters long ago.

Obama is a class act:

During a Democratic debate, Senator Obama helped out his fellow Democrat at a tough moment.

"I had just been asked a question -- I don't remember which one -- and Obama was sitting right next to me. Then the moderator went across the room, I think to Chris Dodd, so I thought I was home free for a while. I wasn't going to listen to the next question. I was about to say something to Obama when the moderator turned to me and said, 'So, Gov. Richardson, what do you think of that?' But I wasn't paying any attention! I was about to say, 'Could you repeat the question? I wasn't listening.' But I wasn't about to say I wasn't listening. I looked at Obama. I was just horrified. And Obama whispered, 'Katrina. Katrina.' The question was on Katrina! So I said, 'On Katrina, my policy . . .' Obama could have just thrown me under the bus. So I said, 'Obama, that was good of you to do that.'"

This is an example of the Senator Obama's character.

Obama is a graceless butthole and this is what you're going to get if he is elected, among other things.

This is ridiculous. (1) from the sequence of pictures, it seems pretty clear that Obama turned away to avoid having eye contact with either Clinton or Kennedy. The expression on his face clearly indicates that he was not turning to respond to anyone -- you smile when you're responding. (2) SO WHAT? Was he supposed to stick his hand in there for a three-way? Maybe some kind of cheer?

It was a natural reaction: not wanting to intrude in a socialization act between his opponent and his newly-declared ally. Subsequently, Senator Obama introduced the harmless explanation that he had been called away. This is what most people recognize as a "social white lie" -- like when you say "good to see you" to Cousin Fred at the family reunion, even though you hate his guts.

The only difference is family reunions generally have less photo coverage.

The only possible news in this story is a reminder that Obama really needs to be careful with Axelrod. The only reason it has any legs at all is because Axelrod's explanation was different (and probably true). This incident is trivial, but in the general election things like "Clinton sort of contributed to Bhutto's murder" will get taken apart.
