BLACKWOOD, N.J. — Former President Clinton said his wife would strengthen the nation's middle class as he did, and that she would be his favorite candidate for president even if they weren't married.

"These are tough times. We can bring America back. We've done it before," Clinton told a boisterous crowd Tuesday at Camden County College, a week before New Jersey and more than 20 other states hold nomination contests. "She will do it."

The event comes three days after Barack Obama won an easy victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton in South Carolina. There, the former president was outspokenly critical of Obama, a tactic that some say cost his wife votes.

Tuesday, Clinton hit issues ranging health care to energy independence to the federal budget to college loans in his half-hour talk. On student loans, he talked about how his wife's policies would echo those he implemented.

And he addressed how as a senator representing New York, Hillary Clinton was among the first politicians to realize that 9/11 rescue workers could be at risk because of toxins in the air after the attacks.

"That's the person I would be here for if we never had been married," he said.

He briefly mentioned race, promising that if his wife were president, no one would be excluded from opportunities because of their race.

Also Tuesday, Sen. Clinton won the backing of California Rep. Maxine Waters, an influential member of the Congressional Black Caucus whose support could help blunt charges of racial polarization against the Clinton campaign in the South Carolina primary.

Clinton and Waters were expected to announce the endorsement via conference call.

In a statement, Waters praised the former first lady's readiness to tackle the nation's economic woes.

"At a time when the economy continues to worsen and so many of my constituents are losing their homes and their jobs, we need someone with the leadership and experience who can step in on day one to tackle the economic challenges our country is facing," Waters said. "Hillary understands the daily challenges that people are facing and she will fight for them everyday she is in the White House."

Issues of race and gender have come to the forefront of the campaign, pitting Clinton, who hopes to be the first female president, against Obama, seeking to become the first black to hold the job.

Maxine Waters named one of the most corrupt members in Congress in 2005 and 2006!

Hillary's endoresement line-up (sans the lesser known Kennedys) is looking more like a group that would be seen at the Vibe awards not an inaugural ball. I'm sure Obama is elated that he doesn't have her on HIS team. Her ideals are more in-line with the Clintons, anyway.

Why did Maxine Water wait so late to endorse, I guess it because she didn't want to be challenged in the prim ires by someone with strong credentials and with the backing of Obama.

Wait 2 more year Maxine and then see your seat go bye bye.

Remember Ohio in election '04? Barber Boxer, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, and Maxine Waters, were the ones that stoop up for the many disenfranchised voters in Ohio over the massive reporting of voter fraud; ALL WOMEN!

I think Maxine Waters is a great lady, and it doesn't surprise me that she has endorsed Hillary. She makes a VERY strong endorsement for Hillary! Too bad HuffPost didn't give her a better write-up.

Edwards '08!

Everyone - on BOTH sides of the Obama vs Hillary question (and Edwards too) - needs to CALM DOWN. I fall into the trap too, 'cause I'm passionate about my candidate (Obama).
That said, I think we need to remember to breathe, and to avoid making this personal and demonizing the other candidates and their supporters. It is critical that, who ever wins the Democratic nomination, we elect a Democrat by a huge enough margin that nobody can steal it. And for those of you out there who are thinking of just sitting out of the general if your first choice doesn't make it, remember that the next president will appoint as many as 3 justices to the Supreme Court. Vote Democratic, whatever else you may feel. America and the world will thank you!

Geez, Hill, Ms Waters not the best choice for promotion according to wikipedia (by way of CREW):
'Waters was named in 2005[4] and 2006[5] as one of the "most corrupt" members of congress by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. They said, "Her ethics issues arise from her exercise of this power to financially benefit her daughter, husband and son." 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxine_Waters

The comments posted at this one blog are a perfect illustration of how easily the self-proclaimed members of the left wing are led to form a circular firing squad.

Fire away, fellas, and when you're all done the reichwing - which does not eat its own, certainly not like you do - will pick up the pieces, toss them in the trash can, and prevail again.

If anybody can cite anything Hillary Clinton did to fulfill her promise to deliver 200,000 jobs to Upstate New York by the end of her term I will vote for her, campaign for her, give money to her, post nasty things about people who promise hope, and buy all the copies I can of the 10th anniversary edition of It Takes A Village. I will forget all the opportunity that her husband squandered, if someone can answer this simple question. She didn't know Auburn from Attica, yet wanted to represent New York in the Senate. How would the good people of Illinois like it if Alan Keyes were their Senator?

I'm an avid Obama supporters and I have nothing negative to say about this endorsement; because there is nothing that should be said about this endorsement.

Maxine Waters, I question your judgment, the gamble you take is only for more power in the House and may well backfire, Speaker Nancy Peloci is a closet Obama supporter.

from wikipedia...

Waters was named in 2005[4] and 2006[5] as one of the "most corrupt" members of congress by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. They said, "Her ethics issues arise from her exercise of this power to financially benefit her daughter, husband and son." They said that Waters' daughter Karen charges other politicians to appear on mailers sent to constituents in Los Angeles showing her mother's support for the politician. Karen has received $450,000 in fees from this endeavor and Waters' son Edward has received $115,000. Waters' husband Sidney benefited from his wife's connections with his hiring as a political consultant by a firm, Siebert, Brandford, & Shank, seeking government investment. Sidney Williams earned $500,000 from this consulting, which consisted of introducing Siebert to politicians his wife had supported. Sidney and Edward Williams also benefitted when they won a contract to run a Los Angeles golf course, with the decision made by a county supervisor who had won a close race after Waters' endorsement and from which they made financial gain of between $140,000 and $400,000.[6] Citizens for Ethics says this violates House ethics rules for family members' financial gains.

Maxine Waters dose not speak for all black people. Look what happen in South Carolina. Black people are tired of people making them puppets of the left. Maxine was given something by Hillary Clinton. She is going to have a hard time in her congressional district because most democrats are behind Barack Obama. You can site the polls all you want. Watch what happens.
