Smith Kennedy Obama
Senator Ted Kennedy, having endorsed Barack Obama for President, has begun his barnstorming on behalf of the candidate in earnest. This morning found Kennedy on CBS' The Early Show, where anchor Harry Smith, apparently lacking the wit or the wherewithal to pursue a more substantive line of questioning, took the opportunity to do a little whistling past the Kennedy family graveyard:

SMITH: When you see that enthusiasm though, and when you see the generational change that seems to be taking place before our eyes, does it make you at all fearful?

Naturally, Kennedy really didn't catch on to what Smith was driving at, and responded, "I think that what people are basically saying is that they want a new day and a new generation."

Lacking a more heavy-handed way of getting his point across, like, say, whipping out the Zapruder film or something, Smith delicately waded back into the matter of political assasination:

SMITH: I just...ahhh--I think what I was trying to say is, sometimes agents of change end up being targets, as you well know, and that was why I was asking if you were at all fearful of that.

Kennedy elected not to speculate on the matter, for once demonstrating that the repetition of campaign talking points can help to paper over a host of media sins.

Obama previously addressed the matter of personal security in an interview with Brian Williams in early January, saying, "I think that every presidential candidate, certainly every president these days-- is a potential target. And that comes with the job. And you take the precautions that are necessary and then you go about your business."

I hadn't seen this interview. This article on HuffPo was the first I heard about it. Harry Smith deserves to win asshole reporter of the year award. What a dickwad! He should be fired. Sure somethings we should speak of, others are best left unsaid and a wise person knows the difference. Smith apparently is not one of those. Smith=jerk.

That has got to be the most horrifying "question" asked by any media person in quite a while.

Are the media so obscenely morbid now that they make controversy where their isn't --the Clinton/Obama spat that isn't much of a spat in a hard fought primary and now this.

Are they really that depraved that they now must stir up that dreadful fear and worry.

Don't forget the Dallas Morning News published wanted posters of President Kennedy on his arrival. For some that nightmare was like a forgone conclusion. So much hate, so little press to capitalize from it. Where it doesn't exist they have to make it because they can't handle real issues or reality period.

Why don't they focus on healthy, honest reform stuff like balancing the budget? I don't want WCW, I want to know that the people they're lining up for this job have the character necessary to provide competent and honest guidance and leadership on issues like stewardship of the budget. That just plain wasn't the case under Bush, until belatedly people started laying the proof of the contrary on the table, and they started canning people in response.
If D.C. cannot/will not keep their house in order, what incentive is there, honestly, for the 50 states to conduct business any differently? This is how billions magically get siphoned out of the budget, this is how debt keeps increasing, this is how public accountability gets flushed down the toilet.
If you want my vote, prove that you're eligible to recieve it. Or, maybe we should just drop all the pretense, including all the fake little fights, save money on the sideshow, at least?
I was hoping for something more, this election year...somehow. God, was I ever stupid! LOL

Inappropriate as Harry Smith may be, can anyone out there actually dispute that this thought isn't crossing your mind? There's a lot of psycho radicals in this country. I wouldn't be surprised if some red neck from the South shows up at an Obama campaign event between now and Nov and starts shooting.

Smith's questions wasn't so much a bad question; certainly, it's a question that Obama (and his wife) ought to be asking...and I'm sure the thought has crossed his mind. For Smith to bring this subject up with Ted Kennedy is simply poor taste and Kennedy should have said as much publicly.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS GUY. EVERYONE COMPLAIN TO THE NETWORK. WHAT A DISGUSTING QUESTION. Teddy RARELY talks about his brothers, and the one time he does he gets asked this...

This is one more that a vast majority of the TV commentators are just plain stupid.

oh how politically correct we are. I would never ask the question but it has been on the back of my mind since he announced. all the nut jobs in this country and many are racists it does concern me.

I have noted many secret service agents around him.

I am sure a black pres is the worst possible outcome for a racist.hope he wins for no other reason then to show the red state south that a black man can be pres.

if he does not win we can have hillary who has goldwater written all over her.

thats the guy that wanted to nuke the vietnamese in that other illegal war and then they named an airport after him in az. oh the fruits of imperialism.

maybe az will name the airport after mc cain after he nukes iran.

think about it iraq oil and iran oil. time to dance in the streets again in america.

god bless america truly god's country.

Oh, agents of change become targets...I thought the terrorists were in Iraq...nope they have names like Harry Smith. Veiled threats disguised as media commentary, its no wonder I don't watch MSM media anymore

It's either the most thoughtless comment ever uttered on network television, or some sort of wishful thinking on the part of Smith. I am appalled, and at the same time, frightened that someone could even think something so loathsome. To what depths have we sunk as a society?

Please Jason, take this blog off, too many crazies out there.
All we want is the safety of all the candidates, it is irresposible for CBS to air such nonsense.

A truly tasteless thing to talk about on the morning news. I must admit, however, my mind went directly to the Kennedy assassination when Caroline announced that Obama was like her father.

But then, I'm old enough to remember that horrifying day and the numbing weeks afterward. A huge emotional blow to the country and to every citizen that leaves scars to this day. So I'll cut Harry a little slack.
