Florida Democratic powerhouse Bob Graham declined on Tuesday night to affirm whether or not Sen. Hillary Clinton had switched her position on a DNC pledge discounting the state's delegates. Instead he chose to criticize the national Democratic Party's position.

But the former two-term senator and governor did offer that Clinton's stance was politically opportunistic, aided perhaps by wins in both the Michigan and Florida primaries.

"She has carried Michigan already and I think she will carry Florida tonight, so certainly she has more to gain by having those two states delegates vote," said Graham. "But I can't imagine that Sen. Obama would take the position that under no circumstance should the delegates from Michigan and Florida be seated because it is so contrary to the real battle in November."

Graham's words came as Clinton secured a victory in the Florida primary. The election had lost most of its luster after its delegates were stripped by the DNC - retribution for the state's decision to move up its primary. Each candidate in the Democratic field signed a pledge agreeing to the decision and promising not to campaign in the state. But in recent days the Clinton campaign has stressed that the delegates should count, citing voter disenfranchisement.

Graham too argued that Florida's voters should have a say come the Democratic Party's convention in August. And he lashed out against the party's stance, suggesting they were risking Democratic chances in the general election.

"You don't do that without leaving some scar tissue, you will have wounded pride and feelings and we've already done that by not having the candidates in the state this past week," said Graham. "If they were here they would have energized supporters and gotten publicity. I mean, the front page of every newspaper in Florida today has a Republican on it."

Florida's delegates will most likely be counted, insiders predict, but not before the party settles on a presidential candidate.

In an interview that touched on a variety of political topics, the former Intelligence Committee chair declined to endorse any of the candidates. "Oh, no," he said, when asked if he would follow his former Senate colleague Ted Kennedy. And he lauded Clinton and Obama for running strong campaigns that would appeal to voters in Florida.

As for Clinton, Graham predicted success in the upcoming February 5th super-primary in part as a byproduct of her name recognition and political proclivity. But he did offer several explanations for why her campaign, in the days leading up to the Iowa caucus and South Carolina primary, had sputtered.

"I think there may have been a little bit of the campaigning of certainty of nomination, [it] began to affect the way the campaign was being run and it lost a little of its sharpness," Graham said. "It may have been that there got to be too many cooks in the campaign kitchen and they weren't quite on the same page."

Was he, by any chance, referring specifically to the hyperactive presence of former president Bill Clinton on the campaign trail?

"I'm going to stand silent on that question," he said, "though you can read it any way you want."

Graham complimented Obama's prescience in opposing the Iraq war, as well as his focus on the situation in Afghanistan. He also offered a stern defense of the idea -- floated initially by Obama in a past Democratic debate -- that, operating on actionable intelligence, the United States should target Osama bin Laden in Pakistan even without that government's consent.

"If you had precise information as to where he was and where he would be at the time you could get your targeting mechanism deployed, I can't imagine any president not taking out Osama Bin Laden," he said. "This is an international monster who has killed 3,000 Americans in one swoop."

Ding! You win the prize.

The party apparatus' here in America reflect the sour choices in candidates we are presented with.

I love this quote from Sen. Graham as a great example of mixing metaphors. He uses the metaphor of a knife ("lost a little of its sharpness"), cooks ("in the kitchen") and books ("on the same page.")

All in all though the Senator shows more detachment and wisdom than so much of the comment in these blogs on either side of the trenches (oops! another metaphor). And that include my own garbage (another one!).

The candidates were allowed to fundraise in
Florida, not allowed to campaign. Sen.Obama did
run ads during the last week, as part of his
national ad buy. He too, attended fundraiser,
and gave an impromtu press conference. Press
conferences were not part of allowable activities, he claimed that "he didn't know".
Delegates or not, Sen.Clinton's supporters ap-
preciated her visit to the state to say "thank
you". Don't we all like to be shown that we
matter? I think that it was the right thing to
do. Delegates will be decided later. We should
celebrate the great turn out among the Demo-
crats! We want that trend to continue in every
state and every vote to count!

I recall this Graham guy had some really strange, weird compulsions that involved his socks. Does anyone else remember this?

The Hillary-haters remind me about what Ralph Nader said in 2000 - something to the effect that there was NO difference between Gore and Bush. How STUPID does that comment look now. Well, the same is true of Hillary and McCain - he's for eternal war, never-ending tax cuts for corporations and the VERY wealthy, and against universal health care. Do you really hate Hillary (or Bill) so much that you would SUPPORT those positions? And, BTW, there are NO circumstances under which the Democrats need to carry Florida to win the Presidency. We win all of the states Kerry won, plus New Hamshire (easy), Ohio (pretty easy), Virginia (likely), Missouri (possible to likely), Iowa (pretty easy), Arkansas (sure thing if Hillary is the nominee), Colorado (possible to likely), New Mexico (likely), and Nevada (possible to likely).

The DNC cannot afford not to seat the Florida delegates at some point. Michigan's delegates could be more problematic, since all 3 candiates weren't on the ballot. But over 1.5 million Floridians came out to vote in the democratic primary and chose between the 3 candidates, and if the DNC doesn't seat their delegates, they will be playing a dangerous game come November. I am still angry enough about the 2000 election - 8 years later - that I can't watch the first part of Farenheit 911 without going into a rant, so imagine how angry Florida voters will be if their votes don't count. Again.

It's understandable that Clinton claims Florida as a victory and vows to seat the delagates, but it also shows that Clinton isn't completely honest. It is not right for her to first agree with the DNC's decision, and then try to break that pledge. I don't like it. It's politics before honesty. It's win at any cost.

She is certifiable. She loves to play the American people for complete idiots. You almost feel sorry for her when she gives a victory speech for winning the participation award. Congrats Hillary...you just won nothing. You will always win nothing.

The politicians, once again, have got it totally ass-backwards. 'We the People' ... are NOT the public servants of politicians. Politicians are OUR 'public servants.' Right? Right! This wacky shell-game over pledges by candidates will NOT stand with the American electorate, and WILL be successfully rejected. It's the voters that will NOT be disenfranchised by ANY of these nit-wit politicians. The DNC is NOT going to risk looking like Republicans in election 2000; they are NOT going to disenfranchise Floridians in this Primary election. What if the DNC disenfranchises Floridian voters in the Primary, but Florida becomes the deciding state in the general election, and then the Dem Floridians stay home in protest, throwing not only The White House to The Republicans, but throws the majority in The Senate, BACK to the Republicans, along with a great many seats in The House being lost. Do you REALLY think Howard Dean and the DNC is going to risk that by disenfranchising Dem Floridians in their Primary??? If you do, you need to out down the crack-pipe and take two-steps-backwards towards reality. The DNC is NOT going to disenfranchise Floridian Dems; it is not going to happen. Florida Dem delegates WILL be awarded ... but ONLY at the Democratic Convention. And Hillary WILL get the lion's share of delegates, followed by Obama, and Edwards. The Florida delagates WILL be awarded no matter what ANY politician says; 'THE PEOPLE' make these decisions, not the so-called big-shot politicians!

In regard to Michigan, because ALL of the Dem candidate names in this presidential election were NOT on the ballot, the DNC just splits-up the total awarded delegates, and distributes them EVENLY among ALL Dem presidential candidates that were in the presidential race, irrespective of whether the Dem candidates names were on the Michigan ballot or not. Otherwise, you just have to throw out Michigan altogether. THAT's fair.

The vile and venomous comments by Obama supporters remains me of the republicans
Hillary won tonight and will win on Feb, 5th.

Sour grapes are bad for you, and as a radical liberal find it offensive to refer to women as "witches" it the same as the "N" word.

Go Hillary

I've said from the very beginning that Edwards, Obama and the rest actually conceded the race to Hillary when they agreed not to campaign in FL and campaign or run in MI, as Hillary did not agree not to run in MI. She just agreed not to campaign in both, and broke that promise in FL.

Although I believe Obama probably wants to fire the advisors who told him to refrain from running in MI and discounting FL, as events showed him a much stronger candidate than the polls were indicating at the time he decided to not to run in MI or campaign in FL, it was obvious from the beginning that a deal would be cut to allow those 2 slates of delegates to vote -- as to do otherwise would insult the exact campaign workers necessary to bring out the vote in those 2 critical electoral states.

The Clintons have always been loose with the truth and shifty about rules. Whatever minimal scruples they may have once had have long been abandoned by watching Bush get away with breaking the law, violating the Constitution and employing outright, corrupt cronyism (with incompetent cronies to boot) and benefitting from it without ever having to pay for the thuggery and lawlessness he employs. (A signing statement exempting himself from an Act of Congress outlawing permanent bases in Iraq and signing a long term treaty with Iraq without Senatorial ratification just the latest of his condoned lawlessness.)

Unfortunately Presidential lawlessness is now institutionalized and none of the frontrunners from either party -- nor the parties from which they come -- intend to do anything about it -- either in primariy eletions, general elections or in governing in any of the branches of government - legislative, executive or judicial. More and more there is not even a pretense that the U.S. is a democracy or abides by the rule of law.

I am Radical. Liberals are nice people, but they have no convictions. They would waltz to the gas chamber, never complaining. Many are my friends, but I Know I can't count on them.

Hillary Clinton is dishonest...a "Manchurian Candidate" if there ever was one.
I will never vote for her.
If that is the choice in November: Fascist #1 versus Fascist #2, I will write in Paul Wellstone, or maybe vote Libertarian.
