NOW Head Described Treatment Of Clinton A "Gang Bang"

Marcia Pappas, the President of the New York State chapter of the National Organization of Women, gained a bit of notoriety on Monday when she called Sen. Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama the "ultimate betrayal" of women. The logic went something like this: Kennedy's endorsement was driven not by shared political beliefs but rather a patriarchal mentality that women like Sen. Hillary Clinton should not, be president.

Provocative, to be sure. But, it turns out, not the first (or perhaps most) controversial statement made by the NOW head in the 2008 campaign. Weeks earlier, in a organizational press release, Pappas described the reaction to Clinton's now famous "crying" moment in New Hampshire as a "psychological gang bang" -- similar to the raping of Jodi Foster's character in The Accused.

"We've all witnessed scenarios where, on the playground little girls are being taunted by little boys while both girls and boys stand idle, afraid to speak up or even cheering," Pappas wrote. "Then there was that movie where Jodie Foster portrayed the true story of woman who was ganged raped in a bar while others looked on and encouraged the realization... This past week, we witnessed just such a phenomenon involving men who are afraid of a powerful woman. Hillary Clinton, in her quest for her Presidential nomination, has in fact endured infantile taunting and wildly inappropriate commentary. Indeed we have witnessed almost comical attacks by John Edwards who in turn sided with Barak [sic] Obama as both snickered at Clinton's 'breakdown,' which consisted of a very short dewy-eyed moment."

The press release, titled "Psychological Gang Bang of Hillary is Proof We Need a Woman President," was released on January 11. In it, Pappas offered scathing criticism of Sen. John Kerry - much in the way she did Kennedy - for choosing to endorse Obama. The former Democratic presidential nominee, she penned, was joining the "playground gang."

"John's recent alliance with Barak [sic] sent a clear message to women everywhere," she wrote. "The message is that if a woman gets too powerful, she can count on the good ole boys ganging up on her. Hillary is a powerful, strong and intelligent woman and she deserves our support. Let us remember what we as women's rights supporters, are charged to do: SUPPORT WOMEN!"

All of this, ironically, was written in the aftermath of a moment of Clinton triumph: her come-from-behind victory in the New Hampshire primary. Though, to be fair, that event was also addressed.

"When women in New Hampshire could vote in private, they came out in droves for Hillary," wrote Pappas. "What happened is that women stood up and said "We're fed up and we're not going to take it anymore! We won't sit idly by and watch, while you gang bang one of us."

This is absurd. So this is what having a woman president would be about? Jeepers. Let's not do it.

I suppose that men bashing is the order of the day for certain "feminist" overseers. Perhaps we can create a new term for Mrs. Pappas, "mansoginist."

When the fight starts to get tough, it's kind of princessy to whine that Hillary's getting kicked around because she's a girl. After all, she's a girl who voted to empower George Bush to destroy civilization.

As a 50 yr old woman I am really offended by Pappas' portrayal of the Kennedy endorsement for Barack Obama.
Her assessment set us back 30 years. I will vote for Barack Obama because he is the person best suited to lead this country. When a woman runs who meets this criterion, I will vote for her.
I am embarrassed by the women in this country who are so limited in their thinking that they will vote for Clinton simply because she is an intelligent, strong woman with connections. This does not make her qualified.

This is so disgusting.

So Obama, Edwards, Kerry, and by extension Kennedy, are all participating in a "gang bang" of Clinton? I thought attacking Obama for a Kindergarten essay, making Obama out to be a drug dealer and pusher, or e-mailing the anti-Obama-xenophobic e-mail smear (as high-ranking Clinton volunteers did) was bad. That was tame compared to this crap. This truly takes the cake.

Obama will win big on SUPER TUESDAY.

I support Hillary Clinton, but not in this way. I agree that the head of NOW's New York chapter (Pappas) needs to pull back from her statements ~ if she really wants to help Sen. Clinton's bid for the Democratic nomination. Yes, there are still many men around the world who are sexist & traditionalists on gender-roles ... particularly with women-in-power. But Edwards & Obama are, thankfully, not among those! So, to pretend otherwise in order to push forth a political candidate/agenda is wrong, IMHO.

Wow get a hold on it Pappas, it is our country and we will walk were we want to. What an inane
statement the more you open your pie hole the more I really wonder what the hell your agenda is. I really know the purpose and we will vote as we think we need to, it has no reflection on black, female or red neck honky......................Go Obama

I feel it has been grossly misleading all this coverage of what the "NOW Head" has been saying. At first I was very angry at this report...then I realized it was the head of the NEW YORK CHAPTER of NOW. How one loose cannon like this can go off, and hurt the reputation of the national organization is disgusting !!!!

It is not getting enough coverage that the National Organization does not concur with this woman's analogy.....

Marcia Pappas needs to be replaced; and soon !!!

Oh good grief -- as a woman and a feminist, this shit from the NY chapter of NOW is too embarassing!

I've always felt that working for liberation meant just that -- liberation! Liberation from having to follow a certain mind-set and narrow agenda, and liberation to follow your own dreams -- not following some rigid dictatorship!

If the NOW organization wants to remain relevant, they need to expand their narrow focus beyond their own noses...

I'll be surprised if this woman from NOW isn't replaced by the end of next week.

Hillary hasn't been treated any worse than any other serious presidential candidate, particularly when one considers all the controversies she and her husband have been involved in.

The remarks of this NOW spokeswoman only trivialize the complaints of legitimate crime victims.

One time at work I had a disagreement over a technical issue with a man. It was a big deal issue and affected my entire department. A man who was a long time friend of mine or so I thought got involved and went on and on was about how wrong I was and how right the man was. I found it shockingly inaproprite. Later one of my woman friends and work mate saw him ( the traitor) having lunch with the technically wrong guy. They were man friends. She just went up to them and said "hmmm". I know how Hillary feels but her friend should have just said" hmmm"

Marcia, here's your sign! Or better yet, Mencia, dee-de-dee (including hand motions). There isn't a shovel big enough to move the fodder that came out of your mouth. What spew!
