Ann Coulter: I'll Campaign For Hillary If McCain Is The Nominee

Last night on "Hannity & Colmes," Ann Coulter made a striking announcement: she'll campaign for Hillary Clinton if John McCain is the Republican nominee. Earlier this week, the New York Observer's Jennifer Rubin reported that members of the conservative punditry were "beside themselves" over the thought of a McCain nomination, but Coulter's pronouncement is a new, and surprising, development. Watch her explain her rationale to Sean Hannity, while Alan Colmes can only sit back and laugh:

Let's look at this rationally, something Coulter is unable to do. Ratings of Senators from the American Conservative Union: (for the year 2006):

McCain 65
Clinton 8
Lifetime rating:
McCain 82.3
Clinton 9

How can anyone seriously argue that Hillary is more conservative than McCain? Come on. The difference is more than 7 times (not that Coulter can do math, most likely). Even in a relatively liberal year, McCain is miles to Clinton's right.

What Coulter's talk proves is that the right wing is so intolerant of dissent that it would rather lose an election than allow a "heretic" to be their standbearer.

Republicans are close to implosion. McCain is not a conservative, I don't know why he calls himself that. He is as left as you can get in Republican party which means that Clinton being as right as you can get in the Democrat party creates a great deal of overlap on their positions.

There is flight to center in American politics. You are going to see conservative of all kinds (neo and non-neo) being assigned to margins for some time to come. Thanks to George Bush, he wiped clean any credibility that Ronald Reagan had managed to build for the conservative movement. Back to Goldwater era for conservatives. Perhaps they will now be referred to as reactionaries.
