LOS ANGELES — Throughout the course of Britney Spears' months-long emotional tailspin, one universal question has lingered with each spectacular turn: Why doesn't her family take drastic measures to stop this? On Friday, they did.

Spears' father, James Spears, was put in charge of the troubled pop star's welfare during a surprise court appearance by him and mother Lynne Spears, a day after their daughter was whisked to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Just as Spears' immediate family was taking charge of her life, Sam Lutfi, the man seen escorting her about town and sometimes speaking on her behalf, was removed from the picture with a restraining order. A message left on Lutfi's cell phone seeking comment was not immediately returned.

James Spears' eyes grew teary when he was named conservator of his daughter. He and an attorney, Andrew Wallet, were named conservators of the estate. The parents sat with attorney Blair Berk throughout the hearing, smiling and embracing after the announcement.

The events of the past two days were the first positive signs that Spears may have reached a turning point in a downward spiral of bizarre behavior _ all of it captured by paparazzi lenses _ that has resulted in her losing custody of and visitation rights with her two young sons.

Spears was taken early Thursday by paramedics with a heavy police escort to UCLA Medical Center's psychiatric hospital. There was no account or description of the young star's actual condition during the hearing.

It was the second hospitalization this year for the 26-year-old singer, who has exhibited odd behavior since November 2006, when she filed for divorce from Kevin Federline, the father of their sons, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston.

A court creates conservatorships when it determines that a person cannot care for themselves or handle their affairs. Commissioner Reva Goetz said Spears would be under conservatorship until Monday, at which time another hearing would be held.

"It is in the best interests of the conservatee to have conservatorship over her person," Goetz told a packed courtroom.

As conservator, her father will have the power to "restrict visitors," have around-the-clock security for Spears and have access to all medical records, Goetz said. It was unclear whether the court gave her father the power to make medical decisions on Spears' behalf; even if that was granted, the role can be limited.

Conservators can consult with doctors on medication options, but the patient can refuse. Only in emergencies can someone be forcefully treated. Otherwise, a court hearing must be scheduled to hammer out the issue.

"Being a conservator does not give them the power to force medication," said Nancy Kincaid, a spokeswoman with the California Department of Mental Health.

The court also issued a restraining order against Lutfi, Spears' sometime manager and friend, and gave her father permission to change the locks on her estate and remove anyone who is there.

Goetz said conservatorship over the estate was "necessary and appropriate." She gave approval for the conservator to "take all actions to secure all liquid assets including credit cards."

Dr. Mark Goulston, a Los Angeles psychiatrist who is not involved in the case, said he was not surprised by the ruling, given Spears' increasingly erratic behavior and what appear to have been periodic and unsuccessful efforts at rehabilitation.

Although placing people in conservatorships is not unusual, Goulston said, courts usually look long and hard at the evidence before putting a person in one.

"You have to really make a case before someone is allowed to become a conservator, so I would conclude her judgment is fairly impaired," he said.

The court, which rejected a request to hold the hearing without news media present, did not immediately rule on another request to seal all documents. Goetz said she would rule on Monday, and court spokesman Allan Parachini said the papers would remain sealed until then.

The conservatorship was approved by a different court from the one handling a custody dispute over the singer's children with Federline. A hearing on custody issues is set Monday morning in that court.

I appeal to all fans and none fans alike of Britney Spears, send her caring messages to help her get through difficult times. Not out of pity but out of compassion for a fellow being in times of need. It is easy to laugh at other people's mistake and say I told you so, but to give a helping hand to someone in times of need is a lesson in humanity. That which distinguish us from other living creatures. She pays for her own misdeed so there is no need to trample her when she is down.
To err is human but to forgive is divine.

Britney has a many many months journey in front of her and it is, in my definition of fine, her father and mother have prioritized their daughter and her well fare. She will survive now and the awful life experiences she has had with her illness will later be seen as learning experiences and will with time enrich her life with deeper understanding of herself and others who live each day of their lives with the same ills.

I can only wish her and others in the grip of such anguish, the very best in their healing process.

it actually turns out that she has a psychological disorder. evil hollywood didn't claim her soul; the soap opera was a result of her mental illness- not a cause. nobody has seriously ripped off her hundreds of millions- despite the supposed evil of her friends , ex's, and family. but i understand what company i am in here, too well. the replacing of vindictive moral judgements with compassionate and effective medical treatment of mental illness, i thought, was some kind of hallmark of the educated society. but it turns out that here in a supposedly liberal medium, the existence of effective professionals able to respond to mental breakdown is held in the kind of intimidated suspicion with which primitive tribes regard airplanes. a conservator appointed by the court has a responsibility to protect her assets, just part of how highly developed social institutions can protect britney and those like her who need to be healed in their minds. the anger toward her usually involves denial of mental illness, ignorant nostrums about personal responsibility, and calling her and her family foul names, including insults aimed at the fact that she's white. all i really understand about this anger is that it's within people all the time and just spills out when someone else has personal trouble. so anyway she'll be ok and certainly will resume recording. she needs to talk to janet jackson about how to re-establish herself and develope another fantastic stage show.

Good for the Spears. Hopefully they can get Britney back on top of her game. It's unfortunate all this has happened to her especially on the heels of her best LP to date.

Well even if the father has ulterior motives, and without being too cynical it is possible that he does, he is also in a fishbowl. The courts are involved and they will have to account to them on any decisions that are made, especially financial ones, i.e, sale of property , stocks, etc. As conservator he is monitored and cannot just willy nilly act independently. That is the best part of it.

As co-guardians to an ailing parent the courts have made my sister and I jump through legal hoops with reports and documentation that have to be provided on her care, finances, and they periodically assess if the guardianship is still needed. It is a serious thing to limit a person's rights and a huge responsibility when one takes on that role as conservator or guardian.

Wishing that girl well....

Am I the only one who sees a power-hungry financial grab by her "Father"? Hundreds of millions of dolars are at stake here. Aided and abetted by the Los Angeles Police Dept. and the very Court system itself, lawyers and bankers and D.A.'s and hospitals have conspired to kidnap Ms. Spears and dungeon her up as they divvy the spoils. Even Dr. Phil jumped in to validate the sham. These are the same forces that conspired to abet and cover-up the murder of Marylin Monroe, their biggest, sexiest cinematic creation. The Britney of her time. The reasons were 'National Security'. With Spears, there are hundreds of millions of reasons, crisp and green. What's so wacked out about a Hollywood celeb partying out all night in their posh playpens? Is there a law against driving to Starbucks? Seems the criminals here are the Papparazzi, who "gang-bang" their prey until they either start freaking out or running red lights to escape. Just under what circumstances did they award Daddy the conservatorship? Britney is over 21 the last I heard. If they can railroad a millionaire celeb to the nuthouse, like some Dorothy Dandridge re-run, in this day and age, then they can do it to anybody. Even me and you...

This is terrible! This great artist is having troubles in her life?? Why hasn't anyone reported anything about this? Are there any websites doing anything to keep us informed of Britney's situation? Anyway I'm going to keep trying to stay on top of things. BTW anyone know when tickets go on sale for the Federline rap tour?

Why doesn't she just buy a big ranch in Montana, staff it with security, shoot any paparazzi who trespass, and just hang out there for a month or two? Take a doctor and some friends with her and chill. We'd all be bipolar if we had scads of yahoos with cameras following us around every millisecond of our lives.

About time some adults took control.

Brittny won't recover surrounded by people of her own age, who are nothing more then enablers and hangers oner's. They see a meal tix and as long as she is dependent, they won't want her to get better cause they know they's be kicked to the curb.

A conservator was appointed.....That is normal for this type of case. I understand that the parents asked for the commissioner to name one and he did.

It is about time something like this has taken place--it seemed to be obvious that Spears was out of control and those around her were doing nothing to do anything about it--they were most likely a bunch of hanger's on who just were there to steal whatever they could take---
I do hope her father has her best interests are heart--it sure seemed she did not have anyone who cared much for her, save to freeload from her and to be around to get their pictures taken by the paparazzi.
Maybe now--she can get on the road to healing and recovery she so desperately needs.

She won't change until it dawns on her its HER that has to change.

A week in a filthy jail cell with the crack addicts and whores, and garbage food to eat would wake her up.

But that experience, though sorely needed, doesn't happen to the "American aristocracy".
