Clinton's "35 Years Of Change" Omits Most Of Her Career

To hear Hillary Clinton talk, she's spent her entire career putting her Yale Law School degree to work for the common good.

She routinely tells voters that she's "been working to bring positive change to people's lives for 35 years." She told a voter in New Hampshire: "I've spent so much of my life in the nonprofit sector." Speaking in South Carolina, Bill Clinton said his wife "could have taken a job with a firm . . . . Instead she went to work with Marian Wright Edelman at the Children's Defense Fund."

The overall portrait is of a lifelong, selfless do-gooder. The whole story is more complicated -- and less flattering.

Clinton worked at the Children's Defense Fund for less than a year, and that's the only full-time job in the nonprofit sector she's ever had. She also worked briefly as a law professor.

Clinton spent the bulk of her career -- 15 of those 35 years -- at one of Arkansas' most prestigious corporate law firms, where she represented big companies and served on corporate boards.

Neither she nor her surrogates, however, ever mention that on the campaign trail. Her campaign Web site biography devotes six paragraphs to her pro bono legal work for the poor but sums up the bulk of her experience in one sentence: "She also continued her legal career as a partner in a law firm."

The full truth doesn't fit into the carefully crafted narrative the campaign has developed about Clinton, said Sally Bedell Smith, the author of "For Love of Politics," a study of the Clintons' partnership.

"She wants to be seen as someone who has devoted her life to public service," Smith said. "I suppose if you say it enough, maybe you can get people to believe it."

Spokesman Phil Singer said the campaign highlights Clinton's side work because it discovered early on that voters didn't know about it.

Plaes don't tell me that this is an actual surprise to anyone? The neocon MSM will do anything (and I mean anything) to make sure that Hillary gets elected. The HMO's, drug companies, defense industry contractors and various other Wall Street power elite will not tolerate anything else.

I just read the full article; your headline (and McClatchy's) should add " ...not the only candidate down-playing less high-minded work".

After the dissection of Clinton's total experience, come 3 paragraphs about not-Clinton - guess who?

"Clinton isn't the only candidate downplaying less high-minded work. Rival Barack Obama cultivates a squeaky-clean image and referred to his work as a "civil rights attorney" at Thursday's Los Angeles debate. He didn't mention other work he did during his decade at Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland, a small Chicago law firm, helping craft housing deals involving millions of dollars in public subsidies.

Among those involved in some of the deals: Obama patron Tony Rezko. He donated thousands to Obama's campaigns, raised thousands more and was even involved in the purchase of the Obama family home in Chicago.

These days, Rezko is awaiting trial in federal court on fraud charges."

Now why would Huffpo focus only on Clinton - what a mystery that is...

Meanwhile, Obama spent a year in the private sector out of college and 23 years working for the public good. But, uh, he doesn't have the experience.

Thank you for posting this clarification. There has been far too much smoke and mirrors surrounding that mythical being that hillary claims to be.

The foam at the mouth clinton fan club won't care, but the rest of us like a little truth now and then.

Great analysis.

As not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for hillary's ego and willy's wallet.

So wait, she worked tirelessly for the Childrens Defence initiative, for years and years, then went and voted to kill tens of thousands of children in Iraq? During the ten year sanctions imposed, brutally, upon Iraq, did she ever stand up for the suffering of the children who were diseased and dying due to those sanctions? Did she call upon the UN to stop the sanctions due to the suffering of children? Did she defend those little children? err, no. NOt politically feasible.

She voted for the war. She was complicit in killing and maiming and burning tens if not hundreds of thousands of children.
They were not the enemy were they? They were born there, as our children are born here and had no say as to where they were born.

She is a phoney with her phoney Children's Defense Fund crap. Her heart is made of coal and burn only for her own political advantage.

"What we say of others is usually best applied to ourselves." -Cal Ripkin (from "How Life Imitates the World Series" by Thomas Boswell.

Could Hillary's "35 years of change" be the real "fairy tale" that is revealed, here?

I urge Hillary's supporters to consider that, not only does her candidacy represent a less electable candidate in the general election, but it's very possible that, if elected, she may end up working for special interests in much the same way that Bush and Cheney have.

The Clinton proclivity to dissemble, fake, and posture for purpose is both legendary, and revealing.

Can America, or the Democratic party benefit or achive much from such a (fairly and/or unfairly) flawed candidate?

(I dislike having to paraphrase Obama in reverse, but... )

No, we can't!

With the broad support of a coalition built from the ground up, rather than from the top down, I believe we can reverse the last eight years of partisan political paralysis. With Barack Obama as our candidate, I believe that "yes, we can" change, not only Washington, but our whole nation, for the better.

So, let's see if I have this right.

She's actually worked as a partner at a prestigious law firm where she represented big companies and served on corporate boards? And, that's bad? Why?

These boards are, presumably, filled with motivated individuals who seek the most competent individuals.

So, shouldn't we contrast that against a Harvard Law graduate who, until two years ago, hadn't served except as a low-level attorney doing civil rights work and as a local politician in Chicago.

We've already done the likeability thing with G.W. Bush. Do we really want another untried, but likeable individual? Didn't we learn anything from the "I'd like to have a beer with him" standard.

Why make the same mistake again? Only in the opposite direction? Obama has less demonstrated competence than did GWB - at least he had been a Governor.

I just don't understand why we Democrats are ignoring the competence issue. Don't we want a President that has at least a little foreign policy experience?

I hope Arianna is not too disappointed with the results on Tuesday. Just wish Lloyd Bentsen was still around to say: "I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine and you (Barack Obama) are no John Kennedy".

Why should the Clinton Campaign allow details interfere with the image they are trying to create for Hillary?

That's no surprise to those who already know that she's lying most of the time
