I Like ItI Don’t Like It

There are essentially three elements of influence: (a) Message, (b) Networking, and (c) Fundraising. "Message" includes all raw communicative product: Speeches, commercials, articles, videos, anything creative. Networking gets it out there — to the media, to decision-makers, to the wider world — and fundraising is fairly obvious, though of course it can turn out rather awkwardly for people like Bill Bennett. This isn't news, but what continues to be is how (a) and (b) continue to work together in grassroots, contagious ways in this campaign.

The latest example is the beautiful, inspiring song and video based on Barack Obama's "Yes We Can" speech after the New Hampshire primary. You know it, but if for some strange reason you don't drop everything and watch it here — or here or here or here or here or here or here or here. Or here. So far, the video has been posted 62 times on YouTube, including one enterprising NYC guitarist who figured out all the chords, listed them for others, and recorded it in one take. I am not going to add up all the views on each video, but in many cases they are in the tens or hundreds of thousands. They definitely add up. Nevermind the blogs, Facebook and MySpace pages they were posted to. That's (b) all sewn up — with zero ad dollars spent.

Now to (a). Quite unrelated to whomever you're voting for, it's a brilliant work of art, musically but also visually (except that "dipdive" watermark really takes away from the visuals). It's a gorgeous marriage of text, song and image, and the cast is a wonderful mix — Wil.liam and John Legend are amazing; Kareem Abdul Jabbar, looking so imploring, is very moving; Aisha Tyler— who knew?; Anson Mount and Taryn Manning redeem themselves from that Britney Spears movie; Herbie Hancock and Alfonso Ribeiro? Wow. And ScarJo, of course — Barack's #1 fan. It's a great mix of star power and real honest-to-God cred, beautifully directed by Jesse Dylan (evidently social justice songs run in the family).

There are a few behind-the-scenes things about the video that are important to note. The first is that it really does seem to have been done independently from the campaign. Democrats have a much, much deeper bench of creative talent on all sides (music, film, advertising) and it's always freely offered, but the campaigns are typically very cautious about encouraging such efforts (cautionary tale: Kerry '04). I heard from a source inside the Obama campaign that they've had many offers for explicit celebrity support that have been gently discouraged (see the wisdom of George Clooney here). Who knows what might have happened if the campaign had been asked, but numerous sources from inside the campaign say that, nope, they learned about it when they saw it online (literally, from one staffer: "Supporters of ours independently produced it. Have to say, though, that it was pretty cool when we saw it online."). Another campaign insider not on staff learned of it via email forward. "The whole campaign has encouraged volunteers to take the initiative and make a difference — host a fundraiser, debate party, post policy ideas," he said. "Here's an example of that extended to the celebrity realm."That's the official campaign position, in any case: A link to the video was included in a campaign email this afternoon from John Kerry, who said the video "came from the bottom up, not the top down, created by people who have been touched by this campaign."

Be that as it may, it still leads to the second point: Could the video be construed as a campaign contribution? Wrote the Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, prime mover behind the project, in his blog post on the subject (punctuation edited for flow): "Usually this process would take months — a bunch of record company people figuring out strategies and release dates, interviews, all that stuff — but this time I took it in my own hands, so I called my friends Sarah Pantera, Mike Jurkovac, Fred Goldring, and Jesse Dylan to help make it happen." Campaign contributions are capped at $2300 — I think it's safe to say that Jesse Dylan's video-directing services are priced a little higher. Or Amber Valetta's day rate. Never mind Herbie Hancock's as studio musician. It's a very valuable piece of media that was given to the campaign, and were it not so close to Super Tuesday I imagine that the Clinton campaign would be quietly sending off emails to various reporters suggesting they look into it.

Why? Because it's been viewed millions of times by now, not only on YouTube etc. above but on ABC NewsNow, where it debuted Friday (and where it remains hosted), plus all sorts of other media impressions. It's currently hosted on Barack Obama's official site and it apparently played yesterday during the rally where Maria Shriver gave her endorsement. This isn't a titillating curiosity like Obama Girl; it's a serious piece of art, and it's being passed around at the highest levels. It's another indicator of what Obama can inspire, and it adds to the momentum that has swelled since his win in South Carolina, the Kennedy endorsements, and the upswing in his poll numbers. Oh, and it was generated in California — not exactly an insignificant Super Tuesday state.

Which brings all this back to influence: Message, networking and fundraising. This election cycle marks the first time when distribution has been so easy — and so cheap, and not concentrated in the hands of the campaigns. YouTube carries the message here (like it did for Hillary Clinton's Sopranos spoof video, it must be mentioned) and the ease with which video is posted and embedded means that a product can be seen without reliance on the official airwaves. In this way, (c) takes a back seat to (a), which is the real driver of (b). Could this swing Super Tuesday? Who knows — but given the wide circulation already and the fact that the press seems to be picking up on it today (most of those articles linked above were from today), it seems that the video will crest/has crested right in time for Super Tuesday. For those who think that getting thousands (likely millions at this point) of views is of value the day before a neck-and-neck election, the video just might prove to have an impact. Indeed, if you believe in such things, you might be tempted to go even further than that and assert that yes, it can.

Video below; also, I'm guessing that this is the ONLY post about the "Yes We Can" song that namechecks Bill Bennett.

This Video going Viral perfectly exemplifies the energy and excitement and momentum building.

This is where you see history being made. This is the exact point in time my children connect and tune in and feel pride.

Will.i.am deserves serious KUDOS.

I think what this video brings home for me is that while I may still be making up my mind about Barack Obama, I don't have any doubts about his supporters. I love the light in their eyes and the hope in their voices when they talk about their candidate. I love the enthusiasm of the hordes of young Americans who will be going to the polls for the first time to support Obama without a drop of cynicism. I love the old heads who have been disappointed so many times but who have decided to give it one more go with Obama.I love the whites who are stretching their vision beyond the familiar image of what a president should look like. I love the excitement I see building in the Black community. And I love the Latinos and Asians who refuse to accept an orthodoxy that tells those of us on the outside that there is only one space remaining on the lifeboat and that we must first destroy one another to gain that seat. What is becoming increasingly clear to me is that these supporters of Obama are about more than electing a candidate; they are in the process of reimagining our America and their place in it. Where do I sign up?

Ah, the experience conundrum. Voters want an experienced candidate who has not been contaminated by or indoctrinated into The System while maintaining a blameless past packaged into an eloquent and attractive little bundle.

OK.

By the way, how does one get apporpriate "experience" to be the POTUS? Isn't that a bit like saying you shouldn't be a parent until you have experience being a parent?

As a soon to be 40yr. old GWM I have found myself pretty disolusioned with politics since 1992. As a wide eyed and naieve 20 yr old I voted for Bill the first time, within one year he had thrown the LGBT community under the bus, even with a democratic controlled house. Obama is the first time in 20 years that I feel that I have an opportunity to vote for someone who believes in the "big tent", all people all races, all genders, all orientations.

When these artists got together to do this video that is because like me they believe in Obama. This is a movement for change, in politics, in government, in people, in our nation.

The ways of yesterday are going to end when we elect this great man to lead our country and unite us all in the greater cause of humanity.

Rachel,

Yes it can! Yes it can! Yes it can!

I want you also to look at this video by a professor Lessig which essentially is a 'Cliff-notes' version of a guide for people why they may want to vote for Obama rather than Hillary. I hope somebody will put it on u tube and it becomes 'viral' too. It is an oustanding presentation.

Take a look:

Rachel,

Thanks very much for your report and thoughts on Will.i.am's collaborative music video "Yes We Can."

The talent to seamlessly implement Barack's words as the lyric line in this piece sets this song apart. The many sites hosting the vid, in addition to You Tube, settle the issue as to whether the "intention behind the conception" was successful.

What remains to be seen is how those who view the incredible video will respond.

Unlike many who have adopted the endorsement tactic of "Wait and see until after Super Tuesday" (whether they are elected officials, influential media personalities, or even journalists in the blogosphere) Will.i.am and the "cast" of this vid have left no doubt as to where they stand.

"Yes We Can" starts by believing. And genuine belief is never ashamed of its object.

Leaders are born not made. I don't think we've had a natural leader in so long we're hesistant to believe we've got one again. But the fundamental mark of a leader is someone who makes the people around him better..in Obama's case that means drawing out millions of new voters and volunteers, basically awakening a dormant population. It's really a no brainer. If this is a democracy, and if a democracy is meant to be a govt by and for the people, and if we have a candidate (the only candidate) whose basic message is "this is your country, we have to work on it together." Then I really don't see any other choice.
And what this song does is it reminds people that we really are supposed to be doing this together, our leader is merely the beacon. Obama is that beacon

The song is just more evidence on how quickly new technology can spring into action and create buzz and influence. Great effort by Will i.am and Dylan.

I was reading a blog on CNN and somone commented "Obama has no experience what so ever, why do people think he can be the CEO of our Gov ..."

Lets take a look at experience in the new frontier. Take, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, You Tube as examples, did the people that started these companies have experience. NO.

What they had was Vision, Courage, Tenacity, Wisdom, Talent, Faith, Hope and Hard Work. They made something great from an idea, a dream, a hope. People signed up because they saw the future.

Obama represents the future.

Don't underestimate the power of inspiration as an agent of change itself. One person, one leader can only do so much on their own. As a positive message extends outward, it takes on a life of its own and change happens as a direct result.

It's the same kind mass psychology that produced the widespread damage of the last 7 years, the mass hysteria that caused us to turn sour and acquiesce to the belicose totalitarianism of the Bush regime. Fortunately, a negative vibe like that does not have sustainable energy because it does not produce a positive outcome, although its message leads people think its for the best initially.

Obama's positive message and talent for inspiring delivery makes the message larger than himself, and sustainable.

Dear Rachel (and I mean dear in the dearest sense of the word),

I agree wholeheartedly with everything except the implication that the ObamaGirl vids aren't serious art.

If the media would donate a fraction of the time spent projecting unreliable polls towards something more tangible such as comparing the issues for each candidate side-by-side, Americans might be better informed and the democratic process would be strengthened.
Many Americans look to the media for information, not solely opinion and conjecture. It is no wonder so many are voting based primarily on race or gender.
