Washington Post:

Many Senate Republicans, even those who have jousted with McCain in the past, say their reassessment is underway. Sensing the increasing likelihood that he will be the nominee, GOP senators who have publicly fought with him are emphasizing his war-hero background and playing down past confrontations.

"I forgive him for whatever disagreements he has had with me. We can disagree on things, but I have great admiration for him," said Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), a senior member of the Appropriations Committee who has often argued with McCain over government spending.

But others have outright rejected the idea of a McCain nomination and presidency, warning that his tirades suggest a temperament unfit for the Oval Office.

"The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), also a senior member of the Appropriations panel, told the Boston Globe recently. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

McCain is exactly the inspirational, young, articulate debater, agent for change, anti-Iraq, economic expert and team player the GOP needs to rally its voters in mass numbers to the polls in November. How can the Democrats possibly attract enough demotivated, older, tongue-tied, status quo, pro-Iraq war, fiscally clueless and submissive Democratic voters to overcome McCain's innumerable attractive traits? Everyone knows how much McCain is loved and worshipped by all the Romney hating GOP pundits and the Huckabee evangelicals. How can the Democrats hope to inspire more voters to go to the polls than the Republicans can when McCain is such a charismatic and ideally balanced example of what it means to be the best and brightest of today's homogeneous Republican party? Alas, what are we Democrats going to do against such a unified and graceful band of kind spirited and unselfishly non-competitive altruists?

This is like the republicans. They turn on their own.

Funny enough, all this McCain savaging does is show how hateful they are. They only hurt themselves with this.

Any scars they leave on McCain in their attempt to support Romney, will be fodder for the Democrats against the Republicans in the general election.

That's why the Democrats are smart to turn down the rhetoric and let the cards fall where they may.

I'd love to see a Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama ticket.

Enough divisiveness, let's start rebuilding our country. The republicans are history already.

We can start behaving like Americans again and stop having to defend ourselves from the right-wing fascist conspiracy to take over the US for the benefit of the few. We must always be vigilant, but we must focus on US, the US.

When faced with a crisis:

McCain will lose his temper and start bombing.

Hillary Clinton will cry.

Obama will stand up and make an inspiring speech.

Romney will check the polls to see which position would be more politically expedient.

There you have it, the presidential race converted into easily digested sound bites. Everybody can stop thinking now!

I listened to the sunday talkers and they seemed to hover around who will be his choice for VP as he is a little old. The very idea of electing John McCain who has said some damn crazy things about staying in Iraq for 100 years and singing bomb Iran like it was funny should scare the holy living hell out of anyone who considers themselves republican but is Hillary any better? She voted for war without bothering to read the NIE report which would have told her it was not true what bush/cheney were saying. She was voting so when she was running for president she would appear tough and some whiney ass female. I tend to think she would hold polls to decide what to do if not call all the lobbyists who are supporting her.

It is a sad day in the history of America that we must hold our noses and vote for a liberal named McCain, who lies, cheats and flip flops and never gets called on his temper tantrums by the liberal press. Of Course they want him to be our republican nominee so Obama or Clinton can be president. No one in a general election will vote for McCain when they have two wonderful other liberals to vote for. I'm for Romney, and hope that all my fellow consevative republicans wake up before tomorrow and see what kind of a horror they are investing in with mccain.

It's official: the GOPs strategy to win is to attack their own candidate. They are hoping the voters are stupid enough to buy it and vote for the GOP to "spite" the GOP. Amazing.

The old GOP of Lincoln has been dead for years.

Bush Jr. cashed in on the unholy alliance of the credulous flock, energy conglomerates, the Military-Industrial Complex/NeoCons, the corporate raiders, and the dividend billionare class.

The right-wing is now split, going back to their theme of "every man for himself."

McCain is now the standard bearer of the MIC/Neocons.
Romney is the corporate candidate.
Huckabee gets the votes of the credulous flock.

Which faction has been the worst for America? Probably the Neo-cons.

John McCain is one scarey dude! I do believe that if he is elected, we will be involved with Iraq forever and then his trigger-happy finger will be pushing the buttons to destroy other mid-east countries..

When Rove, Coulter, and Hastert all came out almost simultaneously against McCain I saw this coming. The only chance that the repubs have is to split moderate & conservative Dems, and recover wayward moderate Republicans and undecided Independents back into the fold. Trashing McCain is all they have left, but it could still act to save the looming Supreme Court appointments and the pro-globalization anti middle class social policies of the Neoliberals from disaster. Beware. McCain is still a very serious threat, not a hope. The lessor of two evils is still evil.

McCain.

Because at this critical juncture, America NEEDS a crazy fossil in the White House.
