I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Harlem

On the corner of 130th Street and Malcolm X Blvd in New York sits Sen. Barack Obama's Harlem headquarters. It is a lively place, with full glass windows allowing passersby to sneak a peak, and journalists and volunteers filtering in and out. On Saturday, a local television crew, Washington Post reporter, and French radio host all descended upon the office. It's been like this for weeks, supporters say. They are trying to make Harlem "Obama Country."

The task would have been deemed an exercise in futility a few months ago. Obama is an appealing figure in New York's predominantly African-American neighborhoods, but the state itself seems well in hand for Sen. Hillary Clinton. Moreover, her roots in Harlem are strong. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, opened his office on 125th St., five blocks south of the Obama headquarters, after he left the Oval Office.

But like the Democratic primary itself, the race in New York has tightened. Clinton still has a significant lead, though in Harlem, the question looms: could Obama beat the Clintons in their own backyard?

Even the question draws ire in the heat of a primary.

"Let me start by clarifying," said Bill Perkins, a Harlem-based state senator and Obama supporter. "This is not Bill Clinton's back yard or his plantation. Underscore, plantation, underscore backyard. Bill Clinton has an address for his foundation on 125th street. Period. Nothing more. Quite the opposite, this is Obama land."

Not entirely. A review of campaign donations on Huffington Post's Fundrace shows that Clinton and Obama have raised almost identical amounts from Harlem zip codes, approximately $106,000 to $103,000 respectively, though Clinton does have roughly 45 fewer donors. Many of the area's prominent officials, including Charlie Rangel, the long time congressman, David Dinkins, the Harlem-born former mayor of the city, and Calvin Butts, one of the most influential reverends in the area, are all in Clinton's camp. And many of the powers-that-be still hold the former president and first lady in high regard.

"Some understandably have great pride in seeing this very charismatic, bright, young black Senator aspire to be president," said Dinkins. "I have no negative observations to make about [Obama]. I just don't. But I support Clinton... It's not just Harlem. It is the Harlems of the country. Black folks just like Bill Clinton, they really do."

But for many African Americans, recent events on the campaign trail have tested this relationship. In Harlem, Obama's supporters clearly feel slighted. Statements made by the former president in South Carolina -- his comparison of Obama's campaign to Jesse Jackson's in 1984 and 1988 (painting him, they say, as the "black candidate") -- were the talk of the office on Saturday, as were the repeated invocations of Obama's youthful drug use.

"[Bill Clinton's] use of that imagery, said Karole Dill Barkley, an Obama volunteer, "just turned me off."

Added Perkins: "That love is disappearing rapidly by virtue of some of the so-called mistakes [Bill Clinton] is making that are bordering on very racially divisive remarks. And somebody needs to get him muzzled because right now the community is not happy about his remarks that are denigrating Obama, denigrating of the movement that he has inspired and are, in translation, a smack in the face to the black community."

There was a feeling that, for all the good Bill and Hillary Clinton had done for the area -- whether legislative accomplishments or the business and property booms that the former president's office brought with it -- the couple was willing to toss away its history with the black community in favor of electoral ambitions.

Clinton's Harlem supporters have responded defensively and angrily to the charge. In part, they blame the media for taking her and her husband's comments out of context. "To suggest that Hillary Clinton was somehow dissing Dr. King by her comments [that it took President Lyndon Johnson to sign civil rights legislation into law] is ridiculous," said Dinkins. "That's a true statement. But that in no way demeans or lessons the accomplishments of Dr. King."

Mostly, however, they note just how much better off African-American communities were when Bill Clinton was in office. "The Clintons' record in regards to African American accomplishments are without bounds," said Kevin Wardally, a spokesperson for Sen. Clinton's New York office. "What they have accomplished and done is why folks have an affinity to them."

And that affinity might be enough. While Harlem could go to Obama, New York as a whole seems likely to break significantly for Clinton. According to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Monday, the she leads her challenger 53 to 39 percent among Democratic primary voters in the Empire State.

Publicly, Obama's camp says it has a chance to win the state. Privately, however, they concede that if Obama pulls away some support, and if he can do so in Bill Clinton's backyard, the symbolism could be as important as the delegates.

Check the Dinkins quote 'blacks just like Bill Clinton.' Therein lies the problem. Bill's not running for office, his wife is.

Obama can have his office on Malcolm X. street
, but this rich Hawian cabana boy will never be Malcolm X.

Malcolm is X, because his African name was taken from him by slavery. Obama's family never knew Slavery.

I guess Perkins wants Clinton to move his Office on 125th street to the suburbs because a white man is not welcome in Harlem!!!

I would rather turn Republican than vote for a racist!!!!

Rangel has been around long enough to know the consequences for a black candidate that runs on race. No one ever voted for Rangel just because he was black. Rangel had to earn his position as a leader in the house of representatives and as the leader of his Harlem district on merit.

I am a Conservative/Libertarian and I will probably vote for Obama. McCain will most likely get the Rep. Nomination and I will not vote for him because his voting record is Liberal.

Not voting for McCain and voting for Obama will do two things. One it sends the message to Rep. that you can not take my vote for granted and if you vote like a Liberal I will not vote for you just because you are a Rep. The Dem takeover of Congress was because the Rep. started voting like Liberals, so we did not vote for them. We know we were going to lose by doing this, but the chose was, vote for them and they will keep voting Liberal, or let them lose and send them the massage, if you don’t vote like we say you will lose. It is the only control we have over a politician.

African Americans have never practiced that control over Dems, and by not doing the Dem take them for granted and only play lipservce to their needs.

If you do not think this is true, imagine waking up the day after an election when 90% of AA (that ALWAYS votes Dem) voted against a Dem and the Dem lost. You think the Dems would continue to ignore them? Why do you think most non-Dem folks see the AA never got off the plantation, they just moved from the cotton plantation to the Dem plantation.

And, as an Obama supporter, I think it's also okay for us to remember the Voice of our campaign, and where our tone becomes noticeably strident, to recall our center.

Remember, all the greatest movements of the last century rang with the same bell-like clarity that finds voice in the speeches of Senator Obama. That clarity arises from things that are ineffable - faith, hope, love, courage . . .

And, has anyone else noticed that life's pearls of greatest price are all neither pearls nor priced? Any effort made to measure or weigh joy or love is missing the point.

Which the effort many make with Senator Obama. For, so many well-intended souls in print and on television continue to see surfaces, speaking of the movement as if it were a secondary piece of the puzzle - the odd-shaped blue one that will complete the sky in our 2,025-piece nomination landscape.

This year, should Barack Obama claim the nomination and the presidency, the movement will have been the whole puzzle. Even a Hillary nomination and subsequent election would ride the coattails of the unique movement that Senator Obama, by his candidacy, has founded.

And Hillary knows that. So do the talking heads, many of whom missed the political movements of the past. Those journalists, the ones that grew up in the political Sahara that stretched from 1968 to 2006, often have a difficult time reporting on Senator Obama. To them the very notion of movement almost gets in the way of their easy and habitual electoral template (race, gender, age, class). For many politicians and politically active voters the same holds true.

So, how do we transcend it?

Poor old Charlie Rangel even his own wife is voting for Obama. Dude if you don`t get any sugar from her you can always go down to the Cotton Club.

Has Bill locating his office in Harlem helped the neighborhood? Just the opposite. Developers have come in and built units that are way beyond the price range of many people there.

Also, I saw him on C-SPAN last night at a African-American church in L.A. Blatantly lying to people that he's supposed to be so connected to. I'll lie to your face AND exploit my connection to you just to get my wide elected? Just shut up and go home. Or, on second thought, keep going and totally destroy your wife's chances of winning.

I've lived in Harlem all my life. Harlem is Charlie Rangel's plantation. But the field "negroes" are about the revolt. It is highly likely much of Harlem will go for Obama.

We are the new Harlemites. We are college-educated, bright, successful and sophisticated individuals who have much more exposure to the world than our parents.

Also, the demographics of Harlem have changed significantly since Charlie Rangel was elected into congress. There is a significant influx of West Africans here as well as middle class whites and Central Americans.

It's going to be an amazing day tomorrow to see how the primary turns out. Obama '08!!!

What gives?

I thought the Obama folks would be happy and hopeful today.

Hillary and Bill Clinton think somebody owe them something. America dose not owe them anything. This Bill Clinton embarrassed the oval office(sexgate). He embarrassed the position of being ex-president(bigotry on the Campaign trail). Hillary Clinton blaming women for her husband misdeed towards them(mad sex gate). What is going to happen next ( Bill shot somebody). Please can we have normal people in the white house for once. I do not want to know about what happen in the presidents bedroom. I am tired of the president selling the bedroom because I pay the rent.

Yes, I agree Harlem is not a plantation. It is a community of free people. They can vote dem or repub. It is there choice. I am tired of people place people of color in a box. The people in that community know what they did and did not do. Like one person posted. Look around the community everything is the same and nothing has change. Look you cannot tell the same lie over and over again with being caught.

Hillary and Bill Clinton GO HOME!!!!

Im so tired of all this racist crap from the Obama campaign. It's beyond playing the race card, They have thrown the whole damn deck of cards at America. What's even more outrageous is the hypocritical double standard. Bill Clinton has been castigated as a racist for saying Obama's war record was a Fairytale. Yet no one is outraged over this flagrant race baiting? The HYPOCRISY is astounding!

Absolutely atrocious remark and I think people ought to start speaking out and contacting the media about this reverse racism that is going on in the black community and calling them on not reporting it. Unbelievable. There's even a posting on HuffPost right now by a woman that says "she want to see little black girls with braids that look like her playing on the White House lawn" as her reason for voting for Obama. She titles the post, I'm Voting For Women," but as another poster said, should be titled "I'm Voting for My Race." As Michelle Obama said to the black people of America, "Black people are going to wake up and get it" as to why they need to vote for Obama. Well, Michelle's call apparently has been answered. Imagine if white people - Hillary Clinton or Bill Clinton made such a statement. Incredible what's going on and a lot of liberal white people apparently are blind to it.

Although Councilman Perkins's choice of words, leave a lot to be desired; somehow, in a stretch, they have the color of truth. Let's look at the facts.
Bill Clinton is the Big White Man, who moved to Harlem; and then it was sold to us, that it was in the spirit of doing well, of bringing up the community. Well, it was a win-win for him! He did for two reasons:
One: the Bush Regime was balking at the price of footage, for office space in Midtown, at the time;
Two: Real Estate was a lot lower in Harlem-Land to say the least.
It could probably be counted, in the fingers of one hand, the numbers of time he has been there.
Meanwhile, it was a stroke of gentrification. It was the signal that it was time "to gentrify" Harlem, and reclaim the territory, which up to then would be classified as "under-utilized" because mostly poor people, and people of color live there.
Since Mr. Bill moved there; Real Estate prices in Harlem, have gone through the roof.
Dinkins, and the rest of his class, and Clinton supporters, are not affected by the tsunami of high prices; and displacement, and homelessness of people who are losing the places that they have lived at, for years.
So it bears examining what Councilman, Bill Perkins, is referring to, when he made his remarks. The Clintons thought they had the "African-American" votes in their pocket;
and he also made an investment, well publicized, of giving a charity in the Dominican Republic $60,000. I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but $60,000, to buy the Dominican votes? That's really cheap!

Si, Se Puede! Yes, We Can!

Enough said.
