"Euros Accepted" Signs Invade New York

In the latest example that the U.S. dollar ain't what it used to be, some shops in New York City have begun accepting euros and other foreign currency as payment for merchandise.

"We had decided that money is money and we'll take it and just do the exchange whenever we can with our bank," Robert Chu, owner of East Village Wines, told Reuters television.

The increasingly weak U.S. dollar, once considered the king among currencies, has brought waves of European tourists to New York with money to burn and looking to take advantage of hugely favorable exchange rates.

I'm waiting for the sign that says;" We welcome Amero's and other foreign currency. Dollars will not be accepted as the dollar is now a worthless piece of paper. Much like the constitution. We love pesos".

I don't see what's the big deal. Stores in NYC have accepted foreign currency for years- they just charge a nice profit on it. They used to just have the electronic tote board that gave the prices of each currency (twenty years ago, it was those old fashioned boards that you stuck numbers and letters into) and believe me, it wasn't a bargain. Whoever buys dollars, pays top dollar.

Go to any city in Canada and you'll see the same.

So basically we've become Tijuana for Europeans.

I live in Ohio and when businesses in these parts start accepting Euros and other foreign currencies--(we do sometimes take Canadian dollars around here--never really thought about it)--you know we are fucked!!!

Good marketing and smart business. If you are getting a business upsurge from European travelers, you should accept their currency. And as an added bonus, since YOU set the exchange rate you can add on a little service charge to offset your kindness.

This is a sign that you will need a truck load of US dollars to buy a loaf of bread by July 15, 2008.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Where's all the outcry against euros?

Shouldn't there be something similar to the vehement denouncement of those in US businesses who accept pesos?
