ABC News reports the death of their longtime correspondent, John McWethy:

John McWethy, a longtime national security correspondent -- who, ABC News president David Westin said, "represented the very best of ABC News" -- has died at age 61 after a skiing accident in Keystone, Colo.

McWethy died of blunt force chest injuries after witnesses said he missed a turn on an intermediate trail this morning, and slid chest first into a tree, Summit County, Colo., coroner Joanne Richardson told The Associated Press. McWethy was pronounced dead at 2:05 p.m., Richardson said.

As national security correspondent, McWethy reported extensively on the lead up to the war in Iraq as well as reporting from Afghanistan. McWethy was a graduate of DePauw University, where he was active with the campus community in his alumni life.

Charlie Gibson did a nice piece on him to conclude the show tonight.

R.I.P., Mr. McWethy.

The ABC News "family" has been hit with loss and tragedy awfully hard in the past few years from Peter Jennings' and Joel Siegel's deaths to Bob Woodruff's and his cameraman's horrible injuries and near deaths, Robin Roberts' breast cancer -- they must be reeling.

McWethy always appeared to be a class act. My condolences to his friends and family.

Wow..I remember this guys reports. I always liked his reports. Never new he had retired from ABC. May he rest in peace, and condolences to his family.

God..life is so fragile. Today you are here; today you are gone. At least he had a good career and lived a relatively long life.

It never ceases to amaze me how, when even a *minor* celebrity dies, some people can't wait to show off what major snark-holes they are.

For shame.

My condolences to the McWethy family... and hopes they don't read a good number of the comments below.

There was a time when reporters had integrity, class, professionalism, and were smart.

john McWethey had of all these and more. Compared to the shallowness one see in the folks today, what a loss.

my condolences to his family.

Some people die of old age in a bed. Some die too young, at their own hand or through violence. Some die slowly, taken by disease.

Some die doing what they love, and found that life was to be lived - not saved up, for a day we may never see. He was one of these.

RIP John McWethy - condolences to your loved ones.

Well the current skiing conditions are close to perfect. Two+ feet of fresh powder, so hitting an icy patch and loosing control can be ruled out. He might have been skiing between the trees in deep powder and hit a tree. So when they say he was skiing on a blue run it could be tree skiing between runs. I agree with fellow posters, he was old school and a very good reporter. The words thoughtful and quality come to mind. He will be missed. But if one has to go, I can't think of a better way than enjoying an epic powder day and then an instant death from blunt impact.

Most likely he was on a very wide pair of Fatties which have a tendency to put you way back in the backseat in deep POW and most probably he could not controll his speed or turn quick enough.

Condolences to loved ones.

Is it just not workable to put some kind of soft barriers up? Fences you can't ski through? I used to be more worried about blowing out my knees than this.

Maybe they could put up crash balloons on every tree! Maybe hay barriers! Get real.

Yes, it is just unworkable to fence of all the areas with trees! Tree skiing is fun! It's probably more dangerous during the drive to the slope, then on the slope itself anyway.
