WASHINGTON — Voters came out in record numbers in about half the states that have voted in presidential primaries so far, according to an analysis Wednesday.

Turnout among Republicans on Super Tuesday toppled a 20-year record in Alabama, according to the report issued by American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate. More than 16 percent of those eligible voted in the GOP race, compared with about 7 percent in 1988.

The report's findings were based on unofficial results from the primaries held through Tuesday. Caucuses and California primary results were excluded.

Alabama had 58,000 new voters sign up in the three months leading up to Tuesday's race, just one sign of newfound interest in a primary that used to be held in June and had little or no significance.

In Georgia, Democrats came out in droves to support Barack Obama, breaking a more than 30-year-old turnout record. More than 16 percent of eligible voters showed up at the polls Tuesday, compared with less than 15 percent in 1976.

"We are likely to see more records broken until the contests are decided, which in the Democratic Party's case, at least may last until their convention," said Curtis Gans, the center's director who performed the analysis.

About 14 million people voted in the Democratic primaries this year compared with the slightly more than 10 million who voted in GOP primaries, according to the analysis.

Twenty states have held Democratic and Republican primaries so far.

Here are some of the report's findings:

_Democratic primaries in 12 states set records. They are Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina and Utah.

_Republican primaries in 11 states saw their highest percentages of voter turnout ever. They are Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Utah.

_Combining party turnouts, the highest percentage of eligible voters showing up this year came in New Hampshire _ 52 percent.

_Among the record-setting states, New York primaries had the lowest percentage of people voting with just more than 18 percent of all those eligible casting votes.

This article is virtually useless. What we need to know: by what %age did the Democratic turnout increase, state by state? Same for Repig. For instance: Democratic turnout in Iowa increased by over 100%, while Repig turnout increased 36%. (Real numbers).

It just seems to me that turning out the elitist, law-breaking Bush administration will be a matter of waiting-out the run of his term. The congress is filled with cowards and party loyalists to the point that they will let the Republic rot and die rather than call Bush and his cronies to the bar of justice for their crimes. Impeachment may be off Pelosi's table but not mine. That said, Regarding the vote, let's hope that the numbers coming out to the polls are signs of a new direction for the country. I am hopeful that the higher than usual number of voters signals a takeback of our beloved USA from the fanatics. Please do vote and encourage your friends to vote. Let's all vote our conscience as I trust that the American people will take a reasonable course back to sanity.

All Americans regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, economic levels or gender need to realise that there is a very serious class war going on in this country since the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 gave a Private company, the Federal Reseve Bank which is controlled by FOREIGN bankers like the Rothschilds, carte blanch control of our monetary system. Inflation with your 33% Income Tax is bleeding workers of over 60% of your earnings. Even if a family of four is earning $100,000 annually, health insurance, education and rents or mortgages leave a family on the edge of bankruptcy.
The problem is that the 99.9% of the Americans are not aware of this class war surreptitiously being carried on by the 270 Elitist families that control the Federal Reserve Banks. Whether Democrat, Republican or independent, you and your progeny are slowly being enslaved.
And only 16% vote...

I haven't been able to verify this number but I heard last night that the voter turn out in California was 70 percent. That seems remarkable and possibly improbable. Anyone who registered decline to state should have been aware that if they wanted to vote in the open Democratic primary all they needed to do was request a Democratic ballot. It wasn't difficult but one did have to ask.

"Voters came out in record numbers"

"Democrats came out in droves"

"More than 16% of eligible voters"

Is anyone else shocked by these numbers? They're pathetic! As someone living in America who can't vote it makes me angry and once again shows me how screwed up the electoral system is here. This complacency is what gets us fuck ups like Dubya!

In Australia I hear that it's compulsory to vote which at least impresses upon the populace the importance of involvement! Bring on the Parlimentary system and let's get more voices heard!

I heard on the radio, The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America, that 73% (seventy three percent) MORE Democrats turned out nationwide for Super Tuesday than Republicans -- they (the republicans)are "cutting and running". In a precinct in Alaska they expected a few hundred, and THOUSANDS showed up. Rachel Maddow does not make stuff up.

I'm amazed that many on these network election show's don't allow Hispanic or Asian in the conversation!!There american's to.Why is it alway's issues concerning White's and Black's?Is it designed to create hate between Black's and other minority group's in america? Is that why Mexican's didn't back Obama?
