Super Tuesday: The Day After

The Obama, Clinton and McCain camps came out swinging after yesterday's Super Tuesday elections. They went after their opponents and tried to manage "down" certain expectations.

Barack Obama went after Clinton's electability in the general election by pointing out that the GOP will have tons of dirt on her.

Asked about Clinton's recent comment that she would not allow herself to be victimized by the type of Swift Boat-style attacks that were leveled against Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 race, Obama said he had been vetted by his opponent in the nominating campaign.

"I have to just respond by saying that the Clinton research operation is about as good as anybody's out there," he said.

"I assure you that having engaged in a contest against them for the last year that they've pulled out all the stops. And you know I think what is absolutely true is whoever the Democratic nominee is the Republicans will go after them. The notion that somehow Senator Clinton is going to be immune from attack or there's not a whole dump truck they can't back up in a match between her and John McCain is just not true."

Hillary Clinton's top aides told a conference call with reporters that she'll be outspent by Barack Obama.

In a teleconference with reporters, Clinton chief strategist Mark Penn said Clinton was having a "record day" raising money over the Internet on Wednesday.

"We will have funds to compete," he said, "but we're likely to be outspent again."

Asked whether Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had decided to dip into their own wealth to finance the campaign, Penn said, "I'm not aware that they have." Campaign communications director Howard Wolfson said he would inquire. The Clinton's financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place their wealth between $10 million to $50 million.

John McCain told his conservative critics to back off and "calm down."

"I think they've made their case against me pretty eloquently," he said, adding wryly, "if that's the right word." He asserted that the pundits' conservative hero Ronald Reagan -- and his -- reached across the aisle to Democrats just like he wants to do as president.

"I do hope that at some point we would just calm down a little bit and see if there are areas that we can agree on for the good of the party and for the good of the country," he said. The critics argue he's too liberal for the party.

Another Election Night Blunder - Emily Carlson
Another election night, another wrong projection.
Late Super Tuesday, the Associated Press jumped the gun, calling Sen. Hillary Clinton the Democratic primary winner in the state of Missouri.
An hour and twenty minutes later, they withdrew their call. Another hour and twenty minutes later, the AP gave the state to Sen. Barak Obama.
The blunder brings back memories of the 2000 presidental election, when the media declared Florida to Al Gore, then withdrew the call and awarded the state to George Bush, only to then declare the state undecided.
The aftermath of the mistake was ugly. Democrats and Republicans alike were irate at the media. Many voters went to bed thinking Al Gore was the winner, only to wake up to see the state was undecided. The public couldn't understand how the media could screw up so bad.
Eight years later, many viewers are still skeptical when the networks declare a "projection."
There is no excuse for these kind of mistakes. The public looks to the media for the facts. They want to know the truth. When colossial mistakes like calling a state for the wrong canidate happen, the media's credibility chips away. Viewers don't forget when huge blunders are made, and it takes a long time to earn that trust back. There's really no excuse for it to happen again. This election could be the most watched/higest voter turnout in history. The media should be extra viligant to make sure the same mistakes don't repeat themselves.

So Dean said that he'll call the two candidates, Hillary and Obama in and bully them into an agreement before the convention. Let's see how this conversation would go:

Look Sen, you have the best campaign staff, you raise about $30m a month, you have more committed delegates. In addition, you are attracting more new voters than ever, you're attracting young voters who would be apt to stay with the Democratic party and you're filling stadiums as never before, not Reagan, not George Bush nor Bill Clinton ever attracted crowds like you have.

Having said that Barack, I want you to run as Hillary's VP so that you could raise money and wipe out Hillary's debt. I'm doing you a big favor here Barack, I'm making Hillary put you on the ticket. What do you say to that, Barack?

The women of America are
Women of the world....We have arrived.
It's time.
It's time we had a say. The men have been running the show since time began.

We need a different perspective. New blood and new eyes and hearts.
Women are multi taskers.
We do things a mile a minute and think it is normal.
Picture a smart, sensitive , woman at the helm.
If ever I have seen a woman I can follow, It's Hillary.

In 20 years, we will look back and see what a revolution this really is.
I do not want to look back and think that I missed being a part of it. I am for Hillary.

Hillary is the revolution.

Not one of these candidates on either side will listen to what the majority of the American public wants the minute they get into office. Anybody believing that a change will be allowed by the lobbyists and corporate heads who are really running this country is fooling themselves. Big time.

Sitting at the computer or going to the mall won't change anything, either. Apparently until people fill the streets and start demanding to be heard, like the illegal aliens did last year, all of us are nothing but a vote to put them where they want to be and then they'll turn their backs.

Change isn't going to come from an individual. That's a dream that's nice to have but unrealistic. Obama didn't just wake up one morning and decide he would like to be president. Backers chose him for a reason and you can bet they are no more pure than any of the other backers of the other candidates. Deals are made and tradeoffs are done long before the election. Do you honestly think those backers are thinking of the "little" person ?

Big business likes the cheap labor so the Democrats will fit that need and the Republicans like the lobbyists from the corporations wanting to outsource more business with a taxpayer subsidy, too, so it will be more jobs lost, more illegal immigration and who knows how many more free trade agreements. Aren't we about to run out of countries to sign up to import to us while they block our exports ?

Yeah, there's a change ahead with the status quo. Bad grows to worse if Americans don't stop this "white folk", blacks, Latino, waah, waah. We'll all just be collective fools and the days of the hyphenated America will be gone.

Until people make the leap and realize that the Obama campaign has been a marketing scam cooked up by Karl Rove and the G.O.P. from the outset, this debate is pointless. Rove swindled the previous two elections, so do you think he's really on sidelines this time? He's not. It's the facts about who Obama really is and where he came from that have been sidelined by a media wall of silence. Think about it - were you even aware of this person before 2006? He just appeared out of nowhere with $100 million - unheard of in election history - an African American liberal with no grassroots network. Who are the people behind his campaign? Dig a little, folks. The truth is out there. (I've posted an article at thecityedition.com which links to other sources.)

If we lose another presidential election to the G.O.P., our $9 trillion debt will get worse, the Saudis will take over our financial institutions, the goverment will go broke (beginning with civil rights enforcement), and millions will be living on the street or at the mercy of evangelical-run housing projects. This election is not about personalities, it's about wresting control of the White House away from the neoconservative fringe. And it's that fringe that has been covertly sponsoring Obama's campaign all along.

Exit polling from yesterday shows that 72% of Clinton voters and 70% of Obama voters would be satisfied with either as the nominee. This is great news for the Democrats. They also reported a 500% increase in youth voting in New York.
Repugs .... not so good.

Obama is naive to think he's faced much of an attack. The Clintons have barely said anything bad about him. The Republicans will not be so kind. They have savaged every Democratic nominee including Carter, Dukakis, Mondale, Clinton, Gore and Kerry. They managed to make Gore, a sitting VP with a great economy who won the popular vote seem like a loser. They managed to make Kerry, a war hero seem like a coward. They are great at this stuff. And they will have plenty to work with on Obama (e.g., drug issues, bogus Muslim charges, racism, Rezko, only 3 years of federal elected office experience [during which he released two books and campaigned for President], etc. I can't tell you how many Democrats (over 40) I've talked to who are thinking of voting for McCain if Obama is the nominee because of the experience issue. The idea that Obama will have an easier time winning than Hillary is unrealistic. It will be difficult for either of them. The Republicans hate liberal Democrats. They hated Bill Clinton most of all because he beat them twice!! And all these Republicans/Independents who say they will vote for Obama now, will likely vote for McCain because of social issues, immigration, gun issues, not wanting their taxes raised, terrorism, or any of the other stupid issues Republicans trot out every 4 years.
Yes, Obama could win, but so could Hillary. And if history is any guide, Obama has just as big a chance of losing as she does, if not more. Because after all of the Republican attacks over 15 years, many polls still show Hillary beating McCain. And she has nowhere to go but up as voters see her in debates. Obama, has nowhere to go but down, after the glowing press coverage subsides,
I certainly don't know what will happen. I just rely on the past 30 years of Presidential politics as a guide for my best guess. But all these Obamafans who think they know with certainty about his electibility are kidding themselves (and underestimating the Republicans).

FISA UPDATE!

The Rethugs are obstructing by blocking not only the amendments that would make the Intelligence bill even remotely palatable, but they are obstructing the Stimulus Package. The goal of all this is to force the Senate to vote on FISA just before the expiration of PAA in a few days, and give the House no time to consider the bullshit Senate bill in conference committee.

More details at Daily Kos:

FISA Fight: White House temper tantrum by mcjoan Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 09:13:17 AM PSTThe Republican shenanigans on filibustering the stimulus package in order to delay consideration of the FISA fix now seems to have been orchestrated from the White House, if you could judge by a letter (pdf) AG Mukasey and DNI McConnell sent to Reid yesterday.See full article at: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/6/121113/6419/454/451096

FISA Fight: Taking it to the House by mcjoan Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 12:58:33 PM PSTYesterday's Republican shenanigans, that are continuing today as they filibuster that economic stimulus package that was such a high priority, highlight the importance of keeping the House strong on holding the line to keep their FISA legislation, the RESTORE Act, the base bill as they go to conference.See the whole article at: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/5/155323/6199/90/450451

Action items: Contact your own Senators and also this list of Senators (see the articles linked above) likely to be persuadable. Tell them (1) NO on telco amnesty, (2) NO basket warrants or reverse targeting, (3) sequestration of illegally harvested evidence, (4) make FISA the exclusive means of surveillance, and (5) vote for a 4 year sunset.

Also call Pelosi and tell her to publicly announce that the Conference Committee will take just as much time as it needs to to resolve the issues between the House and Senate bills. Bush can have an extension of PAA with a fucking bow on top, if he wants it.

Take action! Call and write!

Let's keep our eyes on the pie. Obama or Clinton.. whomever gets the nomination MUST get the support from each and every member of the Democratic Party to overturn the hold the Republicans have had on this country. We either stand together or we will not win. Whoever gets the nomination will get my support in monies as well as legwork.

The Clinton camp's claims of a victory today, after spending weeks retreating from a much stronger position vis-a-vis Hillary's other competitors, reminds of the story told by John Kenneth Galbraith of the debriefing of the German Albert Speer at the close of World War II.

How was it, Galbraith asked, that Speer knew his Germans were losing?

It was, Speer replied, because the glorious victories of the Fatherland were growing ever closer to Berlin.

Let's liberate the Democratic Party from the occupation forces of corruption and moral relativism!

The Big "O" has got the Big Mo !!!
Go Obama !!!

Lest we forget, this is the real reason we need a Democrat in the White House and super majorities in both the house and the Senate:

"Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked a Democratic-backed $157 billion economic stimulus plan that would have provided benefits for the long-term unemployed and expanded proposed tax rebates to include retirees and disabled veterans."

This is what this election is about. Getting OUR govt back from the theives and jackels currently occupying my halls of Govt.
