Barack Obama Raises $7 Million Since Super Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama raised $7.2 million and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton collected $6.4 million since Super Tuesday, as he continued to resist a Clinton campaign clamoring for attention-getting debates.

The remarkable outpouring of contributions recorded since Tuesday's contests in 22 states comes on the heels of an eye-popping $32 million raised by Obama in January and the record-shattering $100 million each Obama and Clinton raised in 2007 in their neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama has been riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors. While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said. Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters in a conference call Thursday that these donations totaled $6.4 million.

In a sign of Clinton's increasing concern about Obama's growing strength, her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, sent a letter Thursday to the Obama campaign seeking five debates between the two candidates before March 4.

"I'm sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail," Solis Doyle wrote. "There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."

Obama rejected a debate proposed as soon as this Sunday to be broadcast on ABC. Talking with reporters aboard his campaign plane Thursday, he declined to say when or how often he will debate Clinton. "I've got to spend time with voters," he said, because Clinton "is better known in a lot of these states." But he added, "We'll have some debates."

Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign offered to voluntarily forgo paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests, but Clinton aides said Thursday the offers were declined and all salaries would be paid.

Asked about Clinton's personal loan, Obama told reporters, "I think there is no doubt that she has not generated the kind of grass-roots enthusiasm that we have. It's not for lack of trying, and she's got a former president actively fundraising for her, as well as people like Terry McAuliffe."

Clinton said the loan and salary offers were not a sign of financial difficulties.

"No, not at all," Clinton told ABC News in an interview Thursday. "We were outraised in January, which we took steps immediately to address, and I think the results on Super Tuesday showed that we were more than competitive. Since Tuesday we've raised millions of dollars on the Internet, so we're going to be fine.

"And my staff is so dedicated that they stepped up and said, 'Look, this is so important we're going to do our part.' I did my part. So we're going to be in very good financial shape. People are rallying around, and I think by the end of the week we'll be back on track."

Clinton's national finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said Tuesday that fundraisers were targeting many thousands of potential high donors nationally who had not yet given the maximum donation of $2,300 to spend in the primary season.

He also said Clinton planned to return to New York before the end of February to attend a major fundraising gala there.

"We are feeling very positive about the outcome Super Tuesday, and we're attracting a lot of new people who want to contribute. But we know we have to raise a lot of money to be competitive," he said.

Thursday afternoon, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he would endorse Obama during a rally later in the day in Omaha, Neb.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and hopes to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

He campaigned in Louisiana Thursday morning, vowing to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina by improving levees, schools and health care, and closely overseeing the Federal Emergency Management Agency if he becomes president. The state holds its contest Saturday.

Obama accused President Bush of failing to do enough to help the Gulf Coast recover from the devastating storm of August 2005. He proposed a multi-faceted program for the area, but did not indicate its total cost or how he would pay for it.

His proposal would help New Orleans hire police officers, repair schools and improve public transit. It would provide financial incentives to attract teachers, businesses and medical professionals.

"When I am president," Obama told about 4,000 people in Tulane University's basketball arena, "we will finish building a system of levees that can withstand a 100-year storm by 2011, with the goal of expanding that protection to defend against a Category 5 storm."

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, plans to concentrate on Ohio and Texas, large states with primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania's primary April 22, believing a large elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

Oh so is she still having money problems? She just raised 6.4 million dollars in a day; 35,000 new donars to her campaign. You smarmy, incoherrent, elitist latte-drinking jackass Hillary haters are so pathetic. Your feint outrage calling Hillary a corportist, neo con, or Republican light, when in reality she is the true Democrat in the race.

Hillary is standing for Universal Healthcare. She not pushing right wing talking points on taxes and social security. She has real plans to make people's lives better, and to get us out of Iraq, and doesn't just talk in broad terms. This country doesn't need hope, in needs help. It needs someone who is ready day 1, and will stand for true progressive values, and she is that person. Cry me a river Hillary bashers, because on January 20, 2009 you will be waking up to Madame President.

Have you people at this post ever heard of balance for godssake? This site is just like the people who view Fox News, they get only one side of the story and then when reality hits such as Hillary being ahead in the delegate count they go "What? What happened? How is that possible? I hear nothing but bad things about Hillary and Obama is Jesus!???" Show a little balance Huffington Post or you're going the way of Fox News... Household joke.

Winners ask for debates. And the American people want more debates. The two of them alone have only debated once. Once. And it was one of the highest rated debates in history. I know why Obama won't debate, he is afraid the voters will reject what he has to say. To bad. Be a man and debate or go home.

Obama knows he has to debate or he'll look like a loser, but he's going to try to squirm out of as many as he can because when it comes to talking about issues Hillary kicks his ass. His campaign is based on such a broad message, and purposefuly tries to ignore spacifics because he tends to get tripped up doing that. Hillary knows the issues back and front, has detailed plans for getting this country on track, and yes she knows the system. Those are the things I believe this country needs. Hope is a nice thing to talk about, but no ammount of hope is going to pass important legislation.

And women think with their heads. They look into the facts. At least most of them and most of men as well. And President Hillary Clinton is going to make a great leader.

Let it go...we get it. You "think" women are better leaders.
I work for a company with a female CEO. I like her. But I have noticed that she has mostly women in leadership roles all over the company. Consensus is that women "can't make the tough decisions". This is especially coming from the female employees. Whom would "rather work for a man". They vacillate between making the call. Leaving you hanging out to dry. I know that is a broad assumption. But every data you pull says the same thing. Being that women DO tend listen better. They hear it all and enlist a democratic process that is NOT GOOD when a decision NEEDS TO BE MADE.
Is that the case with Hillary? Who knows¦But to say they are better leaders is complete bullshit and I DARE you to show me the data that proves that.

perhaps your woman boss vacillates a little because she gives a shit about her *people*. Perhaps she tries to figure out the best way to make tough decisions, without just wiping her employees out. Men have no problem firing people for profit. Perhaps women are little more compassionate, and try all solutions before making tough decisions.

I ran my office and had no problem making decisions. When it came to firing people, it gave me pause.

Women are also extremely tough on other women.

Women are very capable of making decisions. They just think them through first.

(Hillary is such a power monger )

Why is it that you name no men in the race? They are all power mongers. Do you think they run for president for their health? They all think they would be the best person to lead and they want the power to make those changes happen. Why do you have only a problem with Hillary? Afraid of a woman with power?

Just because your spouse cheats on you does not mean you have no core set of beliefs or morals. You just insulted half of America whose spouses have cheated on them. People like you need to mind your own business and keep your noise out of other peoples marriages. And what makes you think Obama is not cheating on his wife? I personally don't think that has anything to do with being president. But I guess you do.

Yeah isn't it interesting that the first woman with a chance to be President is suddenly power hungry and overly ambitious. It's straight up sexism, I don't care if it comes from Republicans or Democrats whoever. She's no more power hungry than Obama, and anyone who would say otherwise should look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselve why they fear someone being President just because she's a woman.

The NY Times has clarified the issue of how much has been raised by both, although they acknowledge that official records for February won't be released until April.

It now appears that the Obama campaign raised $7.5 million in the 36 hours after Super Tuesday, and the Clinton campaign raised $6 million in 36 hours and a total of $7.5 million since February 1st.

Obama Raises $7 Million After Super Tuesday... Clinton Raises $6.4 Million

if you're going to go to the tenth decimal place for one candidate, do it for the other. Every academic discipline that uses math requires this, esp. in comparisons.

The headline is deceptive.

For Dems who are unsure who to support and want to win in November, please consider the following average of the latest polls on the General Election from Real Clear Politics (though with a big grain of salt as with all polls this year):

General Election Poll - RCP Average 1/29 to 02/04

McCain 46.7% vs. Clinton 45.3% - McCain +1.4%

McCain 44.2% vs. Obama 47.5% - Obama +3.3%

Again, polls have been wrong many times this year, who knows how accurate these numbers are but consider the implications if they turn out to be somewhat accurate. Hillary has been shown in these polls to be the weakest candidate against McCain for some time and Obama has been consistently shown to be the strongest.

The bottom line is that all of us true Dems want to win in November and not have four more years of war in Iraq (and Iran?), tax cuts for the rich and gridlock on health care, global warming and so many other critical issues. It is a practical issue, if we vote for a nominee without considering their ability to win in November, all of the candidates and Dems will lose after the final votes are counted.

Here's the link so you can see the numbers for yourself:

Yep, the Clintons really care about the poor uneducated folks who are stupid to support her..... NOT.

Err I support Sen Obama but my honest opinion is that Bill was the one who steered Norman to fund Hillary's campaign. She doesnt appear to have any direct connection to any of Norman's crowd. Bill without doubt knew. Perhaps she didnt know. It wont be the first time he didnt tell her things. Thats the problem Billary.

Lying about the Clintons and calling those that support her "poor uneduated folks" is a smart way to get Obama elected. Are you working for his camp? There is no better way to get votes than to spit on the voters from the other side.

Doesn't a large portion of her support come from poorer and less educated people?

Funny, that's the same demographic that watched O'Reilly.

The bill will suck. There is a narrow chance that Dodd can block it with a filibuster, but we will need to act.

And call everyone you can think of in the House, starting with Pelosi, and tell them that they are to make it public and clear that they will take as much time in conference committee considering amendments to this horrid bill, and if Bush wants an extension of PAA, he can have it with a fucking bow on top.

Please take action!

Obama gets over 30 million in one month. One month. That is some heavy deep pockets. And Obama is selling America out to oil companies, drug companies, investment bankers and on and on and on. And that is not to even mention the CEO's of numerous corps. including news media outlets that have given him tons of money and he owes a he!! of allot of favors to.

adlib, you mean that dark smelly place where almost 1/5th of obama's cashish came from last year?

from opensecrets.org:

18% of obama's donations in 2007 were labeled as 'no disclosure', highest of any candidate in either party.

2nd place was rudy at 14.5%
3rd mccain 13%
4th romney 12%
5th clinton 10.3%
ron paul 5%

Little troll? Why the harsh remark? Adults talk about politics without the name calling. You Obama kids really need to grow up. Obama is not a god, he is politician. And as my grandmother use to say, "Politics is a dirty job. And you can't be in, without getting dirty."

If political contributions weren't OPEN PUBLIC RECORD I'd forgive you, but PLEASE, GO LOOK UP THE INFORMATION BEFORE YOU POST.

Fact is, most of those giving to political campaigns are employed by SOMEONE! Now if you want to do the detailed research to find out who's the CEO and who's the underpaid secretary, you're free to do that. But to suggest that Obama is "selling out America" is absolutely nuts. For starters, just look at the freaking donation numbers - he's got over 650,000 donors!! I assume at some point in your life you've done a math word problem. Here's one for today: Obama has 650,000 donors. If each person on average gave $10 dollars, how much money would he have? Consider additionally that less than a third of his donors have maxed out, compared to over half of Clinton's donors. The fact that Clinton donors maxed out faster indicates they had the deeper pockets to write the bigger checks, whereas Obama supporters generally do not and can only give small amounts like $10-$50 dollars at a time.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:15 AM on 02/08/2008

BTW, the answer to the word math question is $6.5 million and the $30 million sum indicates the average donation was around $50. Which is EXACTLY the amount the Obama campaign often asks its supporters to contribute.

Joe Trippi when interviewed for leading the Clinton campaign had suggested an internet fundraising apparatus like Obama"s and he was eventually hired by John Edwards to lead up his campaign. From Mother Jone"s interview June 29, 2007:

MJ: The next one is a two-part question: What part of the political use of new web tools makes politics more democratic?
JT: Obama just proved it. One hundred thousand people giving 25 or 30 bucks can out raise a bunch of people going to $2,300 dinners that have an axe to grind because they are oil lobbyists or whatever. If 5 million Americans decided tomorrow morning to give $100 to a candidate ¬that's half a billion dollars. THERE WOULD BE NO REASON FOR THAT CANDIDATE TO TALK TO AN OIL COMPANY, AN ENERGY COMPANY, A HEALTH CARE COMPANY EVER AGAIN.
