Barack Obama Raises $7 Million Since Super Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama raised $7.2 million and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton collected $6.4 million since Super Tuesday, as he continued to resist a Clinton campaign clamoring for attention-getting debates.

The remarkable outpouring of contributions recorded since Tuesday's contests in 22 states comes on the heels of an eye-popping $32 million raised by Obama in January and the record-shattering $100 million each Obama and Clinton raised in 2007 in their neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama has been riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors. While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said. Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters in a conference call Thursday that these donations totaled $6.4 million.

In a sign of Clinton's increasing concern about Obama's growing strength, her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, sent a letter Thursday to the Obama campaign seeking five debates between the two candidates before March 4.

"I'm sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail," Solis Doyle wrote. "There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."

Obama rejected a debate proposed as soon as this Sunday to be broadcast on ABC. Talking with reporters aboard his campaign plane Thursday, he declined to say when or how often he will debate Clinton. "I've got to spend time with voters," he said, because Clinton "is better known in a lot of these states." But he added, "We'll have some debates."

Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign offered to voluntarily forgo paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests, but Clinton aides said Thursday the offers were declined and all salaries would be paid.

Asked about Clinton's personal loan, Obama told reporters, "I think there is no doubt that she has not generated the kind of grass-roots enthusiasm that we have. It's not for lack of trying, and she's got a former president actively fundraising for her, as well as people like Terry McAuliffe."

Clinton said the loan and salary offers were not a sign of financial difficulties.

"No, not at all," Clinton told ABC News in an interview Thursday. "We were outraised in January, which we took steps immediately to address, and I think the results on Super Tuesday showed that we were more than competitive. Since Tuesday we've raised millions of dollars on the Internet, so we're going to be fine.

"And my staff is so dedicated that they stepped up and said, 'Look, this is so important we're going to do our part.' I did my part. So we're going to be in very good financial shape. People are rallying around, and I think by the end of the week we'll be back on track."

Clinton's national finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said Tuesday that fundraisers were targeting many thousands of potential high donors nationally who had not yet given the maximum donation of $2,300 to spend in the primary season.

He also said Clinton planned to return to New York before the end of February to attend a major fundraising gala there.

"We are feeling very positive about the outcome Super Tuesday, and we're attracting a lot of new people who want to contribute. But we know we have to raise a lot of money to be competitive," he said.

Thursday afternoon, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he would endorse Obama during a rally later in the day in Omaha, Neb.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and hopes to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

He campaigned in Louisiana Thursday morning, vowing to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina by improving levees, schools and health care, and closely overseeing the Federal Emergency Management Agency if he becomes president. The state holds its contest Saturday.

Obama accused President Bush of failing to do enough to help the Gulf Coast recover from the devastating storm of August 2005. He proposed a multi-faceted program for the area, but did not indicate its total cost or how he would pay for it.

His proposal would help New Orleans hire police officers, repair schools and improve public transit. It would provide financial incentives to attract teachers, businesses and medical professionals.

"When I am president," Obama told about 4,000 people in Tulane University's basketball arena, "we will finish building a system of levees that can withstand a 100-year storm by 2011, with the goal of expanding that protection to defend against a Category 5 storm."

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, plans to concentrate on Ohio and Texas, large states with primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania's primary April 22, believing a large elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

Tuesday was a MASSIVE victory for Obama.

Assuming that I have this right, Clinton got 747 delegates, Obama 744.

That translates to Clinton getting 50.1%, Obama 49.9%. Clinton needed to beat Obama by AT LEAST 10% to claim victory. The front runner title is a hazard, it must be defended, and Clinton did not manage it. She bested Obama by a fifth of a percent.

The Clintonian narrative of inevitability is utterly shattered. It was a double edged sword and has come back to wound Clinton, perhaps fatally.

Meanwhile, Obama was able to deliver on his narrative of momentum, hugely so. Had he picked up two more delegates, he would have got more than she did. And consider his fundraising numbers for this year. There is no way anybody can rationally claim that Obama does not have the advantage at this time, and that Clinton looks to be going down to defeat.

I don"t assert that there is anything evil or ugly about trying to convince the world that your nomination is inevitable. It is the natural thing to do, to try to be seen as the prohibitive favorite. But it has come back to bite Clinton in the ass.

And no, the purpose of this post is not to "bring people together" it is to argue that Obama is now the front runner, and that he is the victor of Tuesday"s contests.

And that 100 is 90% superdelegates, not to be counting on them, I think.

I can't deny that MI and FL may be seated, but they should not. They held their contests outside the parameters of the party, and the party asked the candidates to not participate. Obama respected the rules and the party, HRC not so much.

If MI and FL want to run new contests, there would be no question of the delegates being seated.

Yet Clinton now wants us to believe that Obama is the "establishment candidate." They can't seem to decide which way to spin it.

Insofar as the weekly debate question, considering Hillary ran out of money, she is basically seeking free airtime.

It is pretty shocking she had to loan her campaign money and even her staff is now working for free.

What does that tell you about how well she'll manage the US economy!

Hillary Clinton has the 65 & older group and more women than Obama, but he is catching up on the latter: Georgia 64% of women voters voted for Obama.

Another interesting note is that no US President in memory has won the WH without winning Missouri in his party's primary. Obama won Missouri. He won 13 states to Hillary's 8 states. He won states in the Midwest, the south, the west, the east and the north.

Furthermore Obama has been making significant in-roads with women, Hispanics and white voters.

He inspires people.

He's also collected something like $7.8 million dollars since Tuesday night! In less than twenty-four hours he raised over $5 million on-line.

The more people get to know Obama the better they like him.

The only thing President Hillary Clinton will bring to America again is President Bill Clinton! Obama represents America's future; Hillary represents America's past, and as good as the Clinton years may have been, most Americans are ready to look forward ... not backward.

When Hillary wants to push something, all her paid bloggers swarm here like roaches and join in a circle jerk on how right each other is on regurgitating Hillary's latest talking points.

Hillary, you're wasting your limited finances. Your toadies are seen for what they are and only alienate more people from you and your campaign...the same people you might want to actively support you if you won the nomination.

Seeing the lack of honesty and reason of some of these drones, many would be reticent to join a club that would have someone like them as members.

I hate to tell you kids that support Obama you have no idea how the adult world works. Name calling and lying about the other side is really not a way to go. And in every word you write, your ignorance shows. Grow up, move out of your parents basement, get a job, get a girlfriend, get married and have a couple of kids. Until life has kicked you in the nuts, you have no idea how bad things are out here in the real world for many people. Obamas sermons don't put food on the table for a anyones families.

A vote for president is a vote for life and death of millions of your fellow Americans. Just ask the people that voted for Bush. Soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and nearly 50 million people around America without health insurance. People die every day because of bad decisions made by other people. Everyone should be accountable for their vote. That is why millions of us that support Senator Clinton have read about her issues, know her plans for America and how she is going to get us there. Hopes and dreams do not save lives, action does.

Norman Hsu reportedly raised well over $1 million for Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign by eliciting donations from others and giving generously from his own pockets. Questions have been raised in the last few days about many big contributions from Hsu's contributors, which appeared incommensurate with the modest incomes of the individuals and families who gave them.

Could it be that Norman Hsu is a bagman for a former staff sergeant of the Hong Kong police dept; Chan Tse-Chiu aka Eddie Chan? Mr Chan left Hong Kong in the early 70s during an investigation of corruption. Chan was said to have made millions from illegal activities by then. He arrived in N.Y. in 1975, opened a jade & antique store, & rapidly acquired a funeral parlor & interests in a number of other enterprises; including the title of vice chairman of the United Orient Bank In NY. He engaged the services of Michael Nussbaum, a NY political consultant & was introduced to senators & congressmen. He was called Fast Eddie by the police for his swift ascent to the national presidency of On Leong Chinese Merchants Association ... alas Eddie had to make a quick exit out of the US for... lets just say personal reasons. Of course the Senate investigation into asian organized crime didnt factor in to his departure.. (Tong Bosses don't exist)

Looks like Chan Tse-Chiu wont be getting the same courtesy that Marc Rich got from Billary... Unless of course Billary regains the White House. Eddie is no fool.. I'm sure he directed Norman to spread the money around just in case... To all available potentially helpful politicians.

My point?? Idiot Boy Norman is still in jail... believe me he will talk the talk. He's been weak his entire life. So how did he survive.... he had access to politicians...That put him into the good graces of the bosses.

But Norman is a verified member of Eddies Triad. clear enough? Maybe Americans dont know what a triad is? Its similar to the Chinese Mafia.
How about a Chinese Corporation? That make you feel better.

Believe me Republicans already have the research. The Clintons could say "we didnt have any idea". that would be fine and everyone deserves a benefit of the doubt. But there are 3 more err Chinese Corporations that have donated funds to them... wait and see... it'll come out.

I'm confused about ALL the health care plans being talked about.

When I go to the doctor I invariably wait an hour, sometimes two hours. Blood tests, X-rays etc. are another two hour wait for service. Test results can take weeks. There simply aren't enough personnel and equipment to service the flow of customers.

So we add 47 million more patients to the mix. These uninsured folks currently only go to a doctor or emergency room when they are really sick. Presumably they will seek care far more often if they don't have to pay out-of-pocket.

With 10's of millions more patients using the facilities where are the nurses, administrators, doctors, technicians, equipment going to come from?

No one is talking about this. Fixing the method of payment is going to look like a walk in the park compared to solving the delivery problem.

Can anyone point me to a candidate's address to this aspect of the issue?

Kewl... Both camps are going to need the practice. How will the Clintons handle a verified hate filled Republican machine targeting them again this time with $250 million attack blitz? I'm sure Obama supporters will pony up to the table to fight the good fight. Will clinton voters do the same?

snip

The group aims to raise and spend approximately $250 million for the 2008 cycle, a vast amount of money they apparently plan to use not only on the presidential election, but to greater effect in numerous House and Senate races throughout the country, where six figures can go a long way.

To review the White House connections: the group is headed by Bradley Blakeman, a former Bush White House official, Mel Sembler, a millionaire former Bush admbassador to Italy, and Ari Fleischer, who serves as the group's spokesman. Much of its support so far has come from Sembler and casino magnate and billionaire Sheldon Adelson, the sixth richest person in the world.

Flyfisher: You apparently didn't "get" the message in 2006 DVD movie "The Secret": If you want a red sports car, what you do is sit in a chair, close your eyes, and wish real hard. If you want to get rid of lobbyists in Washington DC, close your eyes and go "Poof!" They disappear, including those pesky nuclear industry CEOs. And to you, HuffingtonPost, if you want to turn the erstwhile decent HuffingtonPost into a hate festival for a great Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, may God bless you anyway. May you soon wake up. You are reveling in ridicule and showing how much you have drunk from the Republican hate machine that's been pumping since 1992. Shame on you for this imbalance, Huffington Post. Adios. I take my brain elsewhere.

teacherwoman, Hang in there. This is democracy and it gets messy. Clinton needs you and America needs a strong woman to be her President.

Lies and more lies. When an individual donates to Obama OR Clinton, they are required to include their employer. You dishonestly list these employers as if they were the contributors.

Are you one of the bloggers paid by Hillary to spread disinformation? If not, you have a serious problem with honesty.

This Kennedy dude or dudette is a typical sneaky Clintonite.

"There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."
Patti Solis Doyle - Clinton Campaign Manager

Every poll or ensuing primary reveals that Obabma generates a groundswell of popular support, once people actually come into direct contact with him, and his campaign. Since this equates into much needed funding and votes, the latest Clinton ruse about "needing a string of (time consuming )debates" is disingenuous.

Obama's strategy has always been "to spend time with (the) voters" especially in states where "Clinton is better known." Doesn't that play to the supposed heart of the Clinton debate summons?

Careful, your wide stance is showing.

Apparently you republiCONs simply cannot get over the fact that a president had a consensual sex act with an adult female. I know you wide-stancers prefer the men’s room for your sexual encounters or the services of a whore or the male congressional pages. But please do not attack those that are more prone to normal sexual encounters. You are just exposing your own perversity.
