Barack Obama Raises $7 Million Since Super Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama raised $7.2 million and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton collected $6.4 million since Super Tuesday, as he continued to resist a Clinton campaign clamoring for attention-getting debates.

The remarkable outpouring of contributions recorded since Tuesday's contests in 22 states comes on the heels of an eye-popping $32 million raised by Obama in January and the record-shattering $100 million each Obama and Clinton raised in 2007 in their neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama has been riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors. While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said. Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters in a conference call Thursday that these donations totaled $6.4 million.

In a sign of Clinton's increasing concern about Obama's growing strength, her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, sent a letter Thursday to the Obama campaign seeking five debates between the two candidates before March 4.

"I'm sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail," Solis Doyle wrote. "There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."

Obama rejected a debate proposed as soon as this Sunday to be broadcast on ABC. Talking with reporters aboard his campaign plane Thursday, he declined to say when or how often he will debate Clinton. "I've got to spend time with voters," he said, because Clinton "is better known in a lot of these states." But he added, "We'll have some debates."

Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign offered to voluntarily forgo paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests, but Clinton aides said Thursday the offers were declined and all salaries would be paid.

Asked about Clinton's personal loan, Obama told reporters, "I think there is no doubt that she has not generated the kind of grass-roots enthusiasm that we have. It's not for lack of trying, and she's got a former president actively fundraising for her, as well as people like Terry McAuliffe."

Clinton said the loan and salary offers were not a sign of financial difficulties.

"No, not at all," Clinton told ABC News in an interview Thursday. "We were outraised in January, which we took steps immediately to address, and I think the results on Super Tuesday showed that we were more than competitive. Since Tuesday we've raised millions of dollars on the Internet, so we're going to be fine.

"And my staff is so dedicated that they stepped up and said, 'Look, this is so important we're going to do our part.' I did my part. So we're going to be in very good financial shape. People are rallying around, and I think by the end of the week we'll be back on track."

Clinton's national finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said Tuesday that fundraisers were targeting many thousands of potential high donors nationally who had not yet given the maximum donation of $2,300 to spend in the primary season.

He also said Clinton planned to return to New York before the end of February to attend a major fundraising gala there.

"We are feeling very positive about the outcome Super Tuesday, and we're attracting a lot of new people who want to contribute. But we know we have to raise a lot of money to be competitive," he said.

Thursday afternoon, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he would endorse Obama during a rally later in the day in Omaha, Neb.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and hopes to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

He campaigned in Louisiana Thursday morning, vowing to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina by improving levees, schools and health care, and closely overseeing the Federal Emergency Management Agency if he becomes president. The state holds its contest Saturday.

Obama accused President Bush of failing to do enough to help the Gulf Coast recover from the devastating storm of August 2005. He proposed a multi-faceted program for the area, but did not indicate its total cost or how he would pay for it.

His proposal would help New Orleans hire police officers, repair schools and improve public transit. It would provide financial incentives to attract teachers, businesses and medical professionals.

"When I am president," Obama told about 4,000 people in Tulane University's basketball arena, "we will finish building a system of levees that can withstand a 100-year storm by 2011, with the goal of expanding that protection to defend against a Category 5 storm."

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, plans to concentrate on Ohio and Texas, large states with primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania's primary April 22, believing a large elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

Yes, debate or go home. Even you Obama fanatics must see his reply to the debate challenge of "maybe two, I have to spend time with the people" (not an exact quote), is lame. Yes?

HAS ANYONE READ THE ARTICLE BY: Catherine Dodge and Alex Tanzi Wed Feb 6 th

The headline reads: Obama will run for Governor of Illonis after he drops out. Obama Campaign Projects Deadlocked Race After Primaries Finish. It is based on a memo that the Obama camp says they accidentally faxed to the media. What accident? And the memo conclusion from the Obama campaign is that Obama can't win, he can only tie. I can't believe that Obama is admitting he can't win. Then why in the world is still asking for money? And why in the world would anyone vote for someone who says up front they can't win and that he will drop out to run for Ill. governor.

HA! Now Clinton has raised 6 million?? LOL LOL AFTER SHE BEGGED AND BEGGED FOR IT ONLY! Obama didn't have to beg at all....people just donated to his campaign after Feb 5! He earned that money without begging for it! People willingly gave!

Clinton won't gain any more..that will be it for her for the month. Poor thing....LOL

I wonder how much of her money came from the far right fat cats? Rush Limbaugh says he's going to raise money for her in order to get Republicans to the polls come November. He also said if Obama is the nominee we're doomed-we can't win.

I am one of the 35,000 who donated to Clinton's campaign on Wednesday morning. After her very strong showing (Obama surge? not so much), I want to do my part to help her close this deal and match the contributions of the Obama fans. The frighteningly shrill and divisive tone of the Obamans at HuffPo have solidified my strong support for Hillary. Unity? There is little evidence of Obama's ability to unite Democrats. His followers seem much more loyal to Obama (cultishly so) than focused on beating the Republicans. They are swept up in American Idol politics and are willing to let America burn if their idol is not chosen.

He and Ann Coulter said they will campaign for Sen. Clinton. If Sen. Clinton can get the right wing crazies on her side then she is the ultimate "unite-onator". Please don't quote these people as they are just dissing Sen. McCain.

I guess you are saying that Saint Obama does not want or need our money.

Well I for one am glad to hear that. I will breathlessly await obama’s announcement to that effect.

But until that announcement, I will assume that he needs money just as badly as Hillary. And anyone that denies this is either a liar or just ignorant.

Interesting. The PBS Newshour just reported that the Obama campaign reported raising "more than $7 million" and the Clinton campaign reported raising "more than $6 million".

Now I really think CBS News needs to do some fact checking on their reporting!

Something sounds very fishy about Clinton's numbers. She's not broke! Are you kidding? It was a ploy for publicity to secure cash. Her staffers to not receive pay from someone with $50M in the bank? I know they are now, but were they ever? I smell a ploy!

If I remember correctly, one of the moderating toadies, that "moderated" one of the last debates, was commiserating with Hillary Clinton that this must be the "hundredth" debate that you participated in. And she of course agreed that they were too much.
Now she wants more debates. Sorry, Barack Obama's argument that he needs to spend time with people so that they get to know him, holds a lot of water.
It is not to anyone's advantage, except Mrs. Clinton, where she gets the out-of-left field support from the so called "impartial" moderators, who asks such enlightening questions as "Mrs. Clinton, they seem to like Obama more than you, what is up with that?"
And other such tripe.
If they like Barack Obama more is with good reason; since he is the candidate for change;
the candidate that is candid, truthful, and straight-shooting, and sincere with people.
Obama is the candidate who gives us hope that change and a different kind of life is possible if we participate in it. Of course we like him more.
She wants more "debates", of course, of course, of course, so that Obama, has to "debate" her and then those hand grenade
type of questions that they ask of him to trap him; and deliberately, they always ask him first.

You're right, Obama is a good salesman with all that talk of change and hope and all that, but you hate seeing up there on the stage in the debates no knowing exactly what to say, or saying "uh" way too much and stammering. He was a little better last time though, but no match for Hillary, she could talk about that stuff all day

For instance, the first question, and it was to Senator Obama, in one of the debates.
This question had a double-edged purpose:
1. To throw him off his game
and
2. To sell us on the idea that the troops would not brought home on the first year
of a new president.
The question was:
"Senator Obama, would you commit to bringing the troops home by 2013?
But of course, Senator Obama kept his composure and hit it out of the park.
And then there was the question about extra-terrestrial life. They first embarrassed, or flummoxed Dennis Kucinich, and tried the same with Obama, who then again hit it out of the park.
Here is Senator Obama's reply, verbatim,
as to whether there was terrestrial life in other planets:
“I don’t know whether there is life in other planets; but the lives I am interested in, is the lives that I want to influence, here on Earth; like a child getting health care; or a senior getting his prescription drugs. Those are the lives I am interested in; lives here on Earth."
I was going to leave this one out; but it is a beaut. They asked the candidates: "What is your biggest weakness?" Senator Obama went first, and he spoke about keeping a "messy desk"; it takes genius to keep a messy desk and he spoke the truth. Edward, (where is he?)answered "figthing for people." And Hillary answered, that her main weakness was her "intense desire to help others." Now, you see why Obama is winning more and more hearts and minds.
Good for you Senator Obama.
Sorry Hillary, "No more debates!" "No more debates!" "No more debates!"
Let Senator Obama have his debates with the people facing them one on one. We always love to see him. To know Obama is to love him.
Just ask his wife.

Si, Se Puede! Yes, We Can!

Enough said.

Because they want to use up his time with pointless debates where they say the same things over and over. He has better things to do with his limited time.

The Clintons know that she is the default candidate among the uninformed, and the less time Obama has to campaign, the better it is for her.

Winners ask for debates. And the American people want more debates. The two of them alone have only debated once. Once. And it was one of the highest rated debates in history. I know why Obama won't debate, he is afraid the voters will reject what he has to say. To bad. Be a man and debate or go home.
