Barack Obama Raises $7 Million Since Super Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama raised $7.2 million and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton collected $6.4 million since Super Tuesday, as he continued to resist a Clinton campaign clamoring for attention-getting debates.

The remarkable outpouring of contributions recorded since Tuesday's contests in 22 states comes on the heels of an eye-popping $32 million raised by Obama in January and the record-shattering $100 million each Obama and Clinton raised in 2007 in their neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama has been riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors. While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said. Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters in a conference call Thursday that these donations totaled $6.4 million.

In a sign of Clinton's increasing concern about Obama's growing strength, her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, sent a letter Thursday to the Obama campaign seeking five debates between the two candidates before March 4.

"I'm sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail," Solis Doyle wrote. "There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."

Obama rejected a debate proposed as soon as this Sunday to be broadcast on ABC. Talking with reporters aboard his campaign plane Thursday, he declined to say when or how often he will debate Clinton. "I've got to spend time with voters," he said, because Clinton "is better known in a lot of these states." But he added, "We'll have some debates."

Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign offered to voluntarily forgo paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests, but Clinton aides said Thursday the offers were declined and all salaries would be paid.

Asked about Clinton's personal loan, Obama told reporters, "I think there is no doubt that she has not generated the kind of grass-roots enthusiasm that we have. It's not for lack of trying, and she's got a former president actively fundraising for her, as well as people like Terry McAuliffe."

Clinton said the loan and salary offers were not a sign of financial difficulties.

"No, not at all," Clinton told ABC News in an interview Thursday. "We were outraised in January, which we took steps immediately to address, and I think the results on Super Tuesday showed that we were more than competitive. Since Tuesday we've raised millions of dollars on the Internet, so we're going to be fine.

"And my staff is so dedicated that they stepped up and said, 'Look, this is so important we're going to do our part.' I did my part. So we're going to be in very good financial shape. People are rallying around, and I think by the end of the week we'll be back on track."

Clinton's national finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said Tuesday that fundraisers were targeting many thousands of potential high donors nationally who had not yet given the maximum donation of $2,300 to spend in the primary season.

He also said Clinton planned to return to New York before the end of February to attend a major fundraising gala there.

"We are feeling very positive about the outcome Super Tuesday, and we're attracting a lot of new people who want to contribute. But we know we have to raise a lot of money to be competitive," he said.

Thursday afternoon, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he would endorse Obama during a rally later in the day in Omaha, Neb.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and hopes to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

He campaigned in Louisiana Thursday morning, vowing to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina by improving levees, schools and health care, and closely overseeing the Federal Emergency Management Agency if he becomes president. The state holds its contest Saturday.

Obama accused President Bush of failing to do enough to help the Gulf Coast recover from the devastating storm of August 2005. He proposed a multi-faceted program for the area, but did not indicate its total cost or how he would pay for it.

His proposal would help New Orleans hire police officers, repair schools and improve public transit. It would provide financial incentives to attract teachers, businesses and medical professionals.

"When I am president," Obama told about 4,000 people in Tulane University's basketball arena, "we will finish building a system of levees that can withstand a 100-year storm by 2011, with the goal of expanding that protection to defend against a Category 5 storm."

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, plans to concentrate on Ohio and Texas, large states with primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania's primary April 22, believing a large elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

hillary's story about loaning the camp her own money was public relations - just like the crocodile tears - designed to get the bag ladies to fork over their lunch money.

If you can't see through this crap, wait until this coming Friday for hillary's next scheduled televised crying fit.

'Oh, poor me.... It's hard.... The nasty penis people are picking on me.... Hurry and give me your cookie money so I can fight the evil man.... My husband had sex with everybody else, therefore I'm entitled to be POTUS.... Oh it's hard....'

Maybe O'Bama and Hillarity should quit their Senate positions (good idea anyway while you're vying for ANOTHER job!) and become fund raisers, like Jerry Lewis or Marlo Thomas.

Yeah, the reason she has to dip into her own personal money is because her backers are running out on her. Trust me. She's toast.

Wow, with all the Obama hate rants from HRC supporters, its no wonder they can overlook a candidate that uses Rovian tactics.

IM SORT OF A HILLARY SUPPORTER (WASNT MY FIRST CHOICE) BUT IM KINDA SURPRISED THAT HER CAMPAIGN HAS COME OUT AND SAID THAT THEY ARE LOW IN CASH. THIS COULD BE TWO THINGS:

1. ITS TRUE, IT COULD BE SHE REALLY IS TRUE.
OR
2. THIS IS A CLINTON TACTIC, PRETEND LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING LOW THEN ALL THE HILLARY SUPPORTERS WILL FEEL SORRY FOR HER AND DONATE.

YOU NEVER KNOW WITH THEM.

Rule number: Never feel sorry for a Clinton. They have made more money off of your arse then you know. All this attention that they get now is a sickening view of how the Democratic party has a love affair for a man that brought us George W. Bush.

If they want to Tith their monies to the Cause that is O let them but call it what it is OBSENCE. Senator Grassley may want to add Os campaign to his list of messianic personalities collecting monies preying on the public, lordy. Clinton will have enough 32 Million wow what that would be a good down payment on SCHIP.

Ok please someone, anyone, tell me what the attraction to Hillary is. I know she is a woman, but I wouldn't vote for Condi Rice. I know her last name is Clinton, but honestly I am tired of thinking that two families own the White House. So someone, anyone, tell me what the real attraction to her is, and why only people over 60 "get it".

Wonder why people won't give a direct answer to this question?

I agree. But she is winning with the blue collar vote because we can all still recall those golden days of the nineties when EVERYONE had some extra cash in the bank, times where gooood, the Clintons were in the whitehouse and all was well in our world.

She's extremely smart. She has great ideas of how to make America better. She has tons of experience in the rough and tumble world of American Politics. She has tons of Foreign Policy experience. That does it for me.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:17 PM on 02/07/2008

She has a lot of experience, you mean like Dick Cheney. How about Donald Rumsfeld. They have a lot of experience.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:20 PM on 02/07/2008

She also has a ton of baggage - bad baggage. I'd love to see a woman in the whitehouse, Hillary just isn't the right woman.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:51 PM on 02/07/2008

God are you naive Tx.

Serving tea to Putin's wife does not constitute foreign policy experience. Brittney Spears has been to more countries than hillary and I wouldn't vote for her.

Sleeping with bill clinton now and then does not morph you into a foreign policy expert. If it did, I would vote for Lewinsky - she's better looking.

Voting in favor of clusterbombing mothers and their children does not constitute foreign policy experience - it shows a cold, black, evil heart willing to sacrifice human suffering for political gain.

Where is this mythical being's foreign policy experience? Did she get it working at the Rose law firm? Did she get it when she screwed the poor women and Latinos at WalMart?

But please, Tx, don't look behind the curtain.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:53 PM on 02/07/2008

Tx, saying Hillary is 'extremely smart' doesn't mean too much vs Obama who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and was the first black elected president of the Harvard Law Review. Barack is brilliant.

"Tons of foreign policy experience?" She was primarily a corporate lawyer and first lady for most of her career. Barack has more *legislative* experience than she does. And he has better experience because it's at more levels of government and people-based/grassroots experience.

Hillary's experience is in getting beaten up by the right, but all that has really done to her is taught her to take phony centrist positions (Iraq, Iran, Cuba, etc) so she can get elected president. She has some experience, but it's the wrong kind.

You are so right. I'm a 60-year old white woman and I don't get her attraction either. She spent most of her time in the White House defending her philandering husband. Is that the kind of "experience" we're looking for in a president?

I'm glad someone pointed this out.

People say people the media takes it easy on Obama -- but just imagine if reporters decided to start taking the Clintons to task for all of their past scandals and personal indiscretions?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:37 PM on 02/07/2008

No she didn't. She got to the White House in January of 93. She so called "philandering" happened much later and she didn't start defending him... if that's what she did until 98 when the whole impeachment fiasco started. Prior to that she worked tirelessly on health care and childrens welfare and healthcare. Any more silly lies you want to spew?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:40 PM on 02/07/2008

Exactly right. One can only imagine what's going to happen when bill clinton has no accountability whatsoever. Every woman will be fair game and then people will be lining up with foggy black and white photos of bill and some bimbo wanting blackmail from hillary.

Retch!

Her attractions: world recordholder for first lady in Ark and DC. As we all know, a first lady is intimately involved in and co-responsible for everything her husband does. Second she is smart.
Third, she is hiding something under the pantsuit and I don't wanna see it. Ech. Fourth, she is calculating, self-aggrandizing, and in search of what the meaning of is is. Fifth, she can't control Bill, who really wants to be a co-president, but he will live apart so he can have a social life.

I can't believe that the New York Times would bother giving even digital ink to the fact that in a state of 1.3 million people that Obama was able to get a WHOPPING 16,800 people out to vote for him. Do you really think that is worth boasting about?

That way they won't even understand Obamas argument of the intricacies of the delegate count... and all they will have seen of Super Tuesday is that Hillary creamed Obama in California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.... and they will want to vote for a winner.
