Barack Obama Raises $7 Million Since Super Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama raised $7.2 million and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton collected $6.4 million since Super Tuesday, as he continued to resist a Clinton campaign clamoring for attention-getting debates.

The remarkable outpouring of contributions recorded since Tuesday's contests in 22 states comes on the heels of an eye-popping $32 million raised by Obama in January and the record-shattering $100 million each Obama and Clinton raised in 2007 in their neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama has been riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors. While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said. Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters in a conference call Thursday that these donations totaled $6.4 million.

In a sign of Clinton's increasing concern about Obama's growing strength, her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, sent a letter Thursday to the Obama campaign seeking five debates between the two candidates before March 4.

"I'm sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail," Solis Doyle wrote. "There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."

Obama rejected a debate proposed as soon as this Sunday to be broadcast on ABC. Talking with reporters aboard his campaign plane Thursday, he declined to say when or how often he will debate Clinton. "I've got to spend time with voters," he said, because Clinton "is better known in a lot of these states." But he added, "We'll have some debates."

Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign offered to voluntarily forgo paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests, but Clinton aides said Thursday the offers were declined and all salaries would be paid.

Asked about Clinton's personal loan, Obama told reporters, "I think there is no doubt that she has not generated the kind of grass-roots enthusiasm that we have. It's not for lack of trying, and she's got a former president actively fundraising for her, as well as people like Terry McAuliffe."

Clinton said the loan and salary offers were not a sign of financial difficulties.

"No, not at all," Clinton told ABC News in an interview Thursday. "We were outraised in January, which we took steps immediately to address, and I think the results on Super Tuesday showed that we were more than competitive. Since Tuesday we've raised millions of dollars on the Internet, so we're going to be fine.

"And my staff is so dedicated that they stepped up and said, 'Look, this is so important we're going to do our part.' I did my part. So we're going to be in very good financial shape. People are rallying around, and I think by the end of the week we'll be back on track."

Clinton's national finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said Tuesday that fundraisers were targeting many thousands of potential high donors nationally who had not yet given the maximum donation of $2,300 to spend in the primary season.

He also said Clinton planned to return to New York before the end of February to attend a major fundraising gala there.

"We are feeling very positive about the outcome Super Tuesday, and we're attracting a lot of new people who want to contribute. But we know we have to raise a lot of money to be competitive," he said.

Thursday afternoon, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he would endorse Obama during a rally later in the day in Omaha, Neb.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and hopes to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

He campaigned in Louisiana Thursday morning, vowing to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina by improving levees, schools and health care, and closely overseeing the Federal Emergency Management Agency if he becomes president. The state holds its contest Saturday.

Obama accused President Bush of failing to do enough to help the Gulf Coast recover from the devastating storm of August 2005. He proposed a multi-faceted program for the area, but did not indicate its total cost or how he would pay for it.

His proposal would help New Orleans hire police officers, repair schools and improve public transit. It would provide financial incentives to attract teachers, businesses and medical professionals.

"When I am president," Obama told about 4,000 people in Tulane University's basketball arena, "we will finish building a system of levees that can withstand a 100-year storm by 2011, with the goal of expanding that protection to defend against a Category 5 storm."

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, plans to concentrate on Ohio and Texas, large states with primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania's primary April 22, believing a large elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

Clinton's haul is pretty impressive considering everybody said she doesn't have any small donor support. That and she doesn't have John Kerry's and MoveOn's email lists.

Wrong again. Obama supporters raised $7.6 million in under 48 hours WITHOUT MoveOn. MoveOn raised another $325K last night, so the total for the past 2 days - including MoveOn, is $7.9 million.

Please donate whatever you can. Your donation will be appreciated and very well-utilized.

LOL!! Its on YESWECAN.com- it MUST be true!!!! LOL !! Stephen is right...Move On conducted an OBa-thon, and collected 7m tht they are terming "indigenous". I just read she has collected 5,000,000 since Tuesday.
No Represntation:
You silly goose- she has designated the largest portion of her monies to her general election fund,(U do understand the rules?) that is why she lent some to the PRIMARY campaign, Obama designated the majority of his monies to his primary fund they have both raised roughly 100,000,000.

Yeah and all that money came from a whopping 35,000 donors too. That's pretty impressive for someone who supposedly has no small donors isn't it.

But Hillary can't win red states. All she does is take the base. Obama in a primary will take the base PLUS. And that is the key to winning against the Repubs.

No one is going to win "red States" that is why we call the "red states". It is going to come down to turning out the vote, and clearly Barack had a hard tiem with that. His rallies no where near match his votes.

I mean the "blue" states are a lock. We need someone who can win the Red and Purple states and, with his support from independents and anti-war republicans, Obama is the one to do it.

The pundits, as we all know, are still wiping egg off their faces in trying to predict this presidential race, based on the polls. Now, we have these self-professed political gurus stating this week that the candidates with the most money will win this thing. But if this were really true, why wasn't Mitt Romney wiping the GOP floor with John McCain??? And today, we have the big-shot establishment -&- filthy rich Mitt Romney exiting the presidential race. Imagine that, John McCain, a guy that almost had to resort to hitch-hiking to get to all the debates because his financial campaign coffer was running on empty, beat out a filthy rich Republican rival.

At the end of the day, no matter what the clueless political pundits may be spinning, Obama is no more going to be able to win this election by throwing massive amounts of money into it, than Mitt Romney could! But it sure makes for more sexy HuffPost spin for Mr. Hope, doesn't it?!? ;)

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:15 PM on 02/07/2008

The difference is Romney couldn't raise the money from his supporters and had to use his own -- just like HRC is now having to do. The fact of the huge amount of money raised is a testament to how passionate people are about Obama's candidacy.

At this juncture, there are very few undecided voters and it's unlikely any will be swayed by political ads. In fact, TOO much exposure usually creates the OPPOSITE result. Think of the "HEAD ON" migrane commercial. Those who prefer Hillary probably are already lined up for her. Obama has HIS supporters lined up and it's essentially a race of getting them all out to vote.
Unless the Obama campaign begins running negative ads, I don't see where either party has a huge advantage money wise. $15-20 million is more than enough to get it done through the last primary and I'm sure Hillary will have that by the end of the month. I don't know of one friend of mine who is undecided. Not one. I don't think there is anything Obama is going to be able to do to shore up the Hispanic vote in Texas. 32% of the population is Hispanic and they are solid Clinton supporters. The license issue will be seen for what it is....pure political pandering and hispanics aren't stupid. Kennedy didn't get it done for Obama and Texas will be no different. Hispanics in that state don't get there voting orders from a Massachusetts liberal.
This race is FAR from over but one would think by HuffPo standards, Obama is one week away from having a sword placed on his shoulder.

I know a lot of people who have switched from Hillary to Obama in the last couple of weeks (many of them in Virginia and North Carolina). Hillary had a huge name recognition advantage at the beginning of this thing. The more people learn about, and get to know, Obama, the more they support him.

(As for Texas, now that the Repub. nomination is a done deal, I wonder how many anti-Hillary repubs vote in the open primary against her.)

OhPlease2007:

No, Barack Obama will not win because he can raise more money than Hilllary Clinton. Barack Obama will win because he gets more votes from more Americans who want change.

Barack Obama represents the Ameican people who want a change from what republcans and Hillary Clinton offers, which is hate, violence, wars, racism, and divisive politics.

Barack Obama as Pesident of the United States of America, offers positive change, offers us Americans an opportunity to be better than our past, as one people, peace, justice and love.

There is not any difference between any republican and Hillary Clinton.
Hillary Clinton voted with the republicans for the Iraq war that continues to murder innocent Americans and Iraqis daily. Than Hillary Clinton voted again with the republicans on the Kyle-Lieberman war bill, to give George Bush and the republicans war power against Iran.

Don't put stock into what someone promise they will do, look at what they have done. And Hillary Clinton has supported the republicans every wrong mistake, starting with the Iraq war.

There is not any need for Independents or Anti-War republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton when she is the same as the republicans.
With Barack Obama as the democratic party nominee, the American people have a real choice on election day. They can vote for the same old lies and wars with the republicans or they can vote for change.....unity, one people, peace, and justice.

We, the people deserve better than the warmongering republicans or warmongering Hillary Clinton.

Americans deserve a President who gets it right the first time when it comes to human life, and the only one that can do that is a true democrat.....Barack Obama, because we are truly one people, and one nation...The United States of America.

If you truly believe your own words, "Don't put stock into what someone promise they will do, look at what they have done.", then please look closely at Senator Obama's record -- he's voted with Senator Clinton on every war funding bill. And speaking of his voting record, it is scant to say the least. I do believe in what you say, and I've seen what Senator Clinton has done for children, women and the working poor and she will get my vote.

Get informed Ann. 90% of Obama's donations are under $100.00 from average joe Americans.

These are not from Oprah or Lobbyists like Hillary’s DC elitist donations have come from. This is why Hillary is in trouble. All her lobbyist buddies have maxed out already.

My suggestion is to have Bill Clinton continue to work with dictators around the Globe to raise money. That way Hillary can continue to “loan” the blood money to her campaign.

I'm really impressed by the string of failures Hillary has racked up lately. Bear with me for a second, and think about it.

1. What has Hillary accomplished since she's been a Senator? Aside from voting FOR the Iraq War without even bothering to read the Iraq NIE, I can't even think of a single thing she's done.

2. We were told on the eve of the campaign that it was important to support Hillary because she was "so great at fundraising, such a strong fundraiser, that she'd be able to go the distance". Now? "Lowly" Barack Obama is consistently out-raising her by a 3-1 margin. She has mismanaged her camapign resources to the point where her senior staff has to work for nothing.

3. As First Lady, she undertook a multi-year effort to reform health insurance. The entire project was a cataclysmic failure, which showed that she was unable to build ANY consensus with either the health insurance industry or the Congress.

Hillary's had a lot of time in the federal government, but has amazingly little to show for it. She may have "experience", but where are the results? Even Barack Obama, a one-term junior Senator, has a lot more results to show from being a Senator than Hillary Clinton.

Obama? Most comprehensive ethics reform in Illinois in the last 25 years. Universal healthcare for children. Expanded healthcare for the working class. Reformed the death penalty in controversial hot-spot Illinois. And these are all bills he sponsored himself that got passed.

In the US Senate, campaign finance reform, lobbyist ethics reform, and in his 3 years he's sponsored 157 bills.

So, in case you forgot what was written in your parent statement, kindly tell us what the Hell Hillary Clinton has done in 7 years in the US Senate, 12 years as the wife of the governor of Arkansas, and 8 years as the wife of the President of the United States?

Hillary has raised over 3 million and probably will hit 5 or 6 which ain't to shabby. Is there ever any balance a this site. Had Obama won or even come close in Calif and NY you would be proclaiming it's over. Be fair...Obama won more states, some more consequential than others(I assume if Hillary won Idoho, AK, it would be laughed out), but I give him credit for running a strong, if not disingenuous campaign. Hillary held her own in the big states and picked up a few small southern staes. NM is basically a tie.
She has a good chance of winning the big staes of Ohio, TX and Penn which would basically put her in the drivers seat even though Obama will win the mid Atlantic contests coming up...If she decides to put more of her money in for a final push, so what? She has worked hard to try and get the nomination, and unlike Romney, is still in a very good position.....I know that's hard for some of you Obama fans to accept, but she still could win this...just like he might.

Hillary has raised over 3 million dollars in 48 hours, Obama has raised over 7 million dollars in a day and a half.

Hillary's numbers are on the front page, it's just not incredibly impressive.

This is the problem that I have with the "Obama Lovers" they really don't understand much about politics. Here's three examples One, they want change in washington from what the republicans have done yet, if Hillary wins, their not going to vote for her. They well just stay home and bendover and take four more years of republican crap. Two, Obama won several RED STATE that no matter who the democratic noimnee is, they will NOT win the general election in those states.(i.e. Idaho, Uath, Kansas, North Dakota, South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia)Yet they projsct some much onto him I wonder what they will do when he can't deliver? And lastly, the republicans just blocked the economic stimulus bill in the Senate, this is a golden opportunity for Obama to show is supporters how well he can reach over and get republicans to work with him. Some americans need that help.

First, Obama will win Kansas and Idaho and Utah in the General, not to mention Georgia and Colorado and Arizona. He will win more than a few red states that no democrat since FDR has won.

Second, that stimulus bill is a piece of crap that rewards businesses over people. It does nothing for low or no income people and gives a bunch of people, myself included, a refund that I don't need.

We need real economic reform in this country, not shuffling chairs on the Titanic.

All of Hillary's rich donors have maxed out. She has depended on her rich friends to put her over the top. She never dreamed anyone would challenge her inevitability and be able to out-raise her.

I am expecting Hillary to have her desperate pleas and crying jags increase as she looks at the totals Barack has coming in. I am sad thought that Edwards and Richardson are keeping their mouths shut on supporting who? I also will be more than a bit angry if Richardson bows and gives support to Hillary after watching the super bowl with Bill. I hope he can't be bought as Teddy saved Bill R's ass in a election years ago loyalty maybe? Also Edwards should not be fooled by hillary promising im maybe a VP spot as Bill probably mentioned to Bill R too. Sad stuff. Too bad that people want to bring back the 90's by bringing back clinton. Cannot happen. Together the nation needs to heal and Hillary is not that healer.

I wish Richardson would support the candiate that he thinks is best for the country, not the one that could further his career or that he owes loyalty too. That is the change I want to see.

So has Hillary, she's on her second 7 mil. It's from grassroots supporters.

If he'd just smoked the buds it'd be $32M. Pity.

When will people start talking about where the candidates are getting their money from instead of just how much they're getting? Do people not see that when Hillary is getting her money from the defense industry (more than any other candidate INCLUDING the republicans) and other large industries, she will have favors to repay if elected just as George W. Bush had favors to repay. We see where that got us. Contrast that with Obama who is getting his money from we the people. Imagine, political favors being paid to the people instead of large monied interests. Maybe we CAN change for the better.

How about some truth telling: her campaign has been poorly run, to put it "charitably". She's the head of her own campaign, right? For someone who keeps talking about 35YEARSOFEXPERIENCE and READYONDAYONE, she certainly seems to be weak at the helm of a $100 million ship. Her performance is beginning to remind me of another recent leader with an abysmal record of management, who also doesn't make Plan Bs.
